Learn About Costco's Auto Insurance Connect Program

What Is Costco's Auto Insurance Connect Program?

Costco's Auto Insurance Connect program is a service that connects Costco members with auto insurance providers. Unlike traditional insurance companies, Costco does not directly sell auto insurance. Instead, the program partners with established insurance carriers to help members explore coverage options. This partnership model means that members can review quotes and information from multiple insurers without having to contact each company separately.

The program operates through Costco's membership platform, making it available to the warehouse chain's approximately 68 million members worldwide. Members who are interested in learning about auto insurance options can access information about this program through Costco's website or by visiting a warehouse location. The program aims to streamline the process of gathering information about auto insurance from different carriers.

Costco member benefits often include perks like discounts on various services and products. The Auto Insurance Connect program follows this model by working with insurance partners that may offer member discounts. These discounts vary depending on the insurance carrier and the specific coverage options selected. The actual discount amounts and conditions are determined by each individual insurance partner, not by Costco itself.

The program has been available to Costco members for several years and operates in most U.S. states, though availability may vary by location. The insurance partners in the program include well-known carriers in the auto insurance industry. Members can explore these partnerships to learn about different coverage types and pricing structures offered by established insurance companies.

Practical Takeaway: Costco's Auto Insurance Connect is a referral service that connects members with insurance partners. It's designed to save time by providing access to multiple insurance quotes through one platform rather than contacting companies individually.

How the Program Works: Step-by-Step Process

The Auto Insurance Connect program operates through a straightforward process that begins on Costco's member website. Members can navigate to the insurance section and select the option for auto insurance information. The program then presents information about available insurance partners and the types of coverage they offer. This initial step is informational, allowing members to learn about which carriers are part of the program in their area.

Once a member chooses to explore a specific insurance partner's offerings, they can review general information about that company's coverage options. The program may provide details about different types of coverage, such as liability, collision, comprehensive, and uninsured motorist protection. This information helps members understand what different coverage types mean and how they work in insurance policies.

Members who want specific pricing information from an insurance partner will need to provide some basic details. These typically include information such as driving history, vehicle details (make, model, year), current coverage level if they have existing insurance, and the type of coverage they're interested in. The information collected is used by the insurance partner to generate a quote specific to the member's situation.

After submitting information, members receive quotes directly from the insurance carriers. These quotes show pricing for different coverage options and deductible levels. Members can then compare these quotes to understand the pricing differences between carriers and coverage types. The quotes remain valid for a specific period, usually around 30 to 45 days, allowing members time to consider their options.

Communication between members and insurance carriers happens directly, not through Costco. If a member has questions about a quote or wants to proceed with purchasing a policy, they contact the insurance company directly. This direct relationship with the carrier continues if the member decides to purchase coverage.

Practical Takeaway: The program works as an information bridge that connects you with insurance carriers. You provide basic information once, receive quotes from multiple companies, and then work directly with each carrier if you want to move forward with a policy.

Insurance Partners and Coverage Options Available

Costco's Auto Insurance Connect program partners with several major insurance carriers. These partners have changed over time as Costco negotiates partnerships and as carriers adjust their participation. At various points, the program has included carriers such as American Family Insurance, AARP/The Hartford, Infinity Insurance, and others. The specific carriers available depend on which state a member lives in, as insurance regulations vary by state and not all carriers operate in all locations.

Each insurance partner offers standard auto insurance coverage types. Liability coverage, which is required by law in all U.S. states, pays for damages or injuries you cause to another person or their property. Coverage limits for liability vary, typically starting around $25,000 and going up to $500,000 or higher depending on what a driver selects. Members can review different liability limit options when receiving quotes.

Collision coverage pays for damage to your own vehicle if you're in an accident with another vehicle or object. This coverage is optional if you own your car outright, but is often required if you have a car loan or lease. Comprehensive coverage (often called "other than collision" coverage) protects against damage from events like theft, weather, or vandalism. Both collision and comprehensive coverage typically come with deductible options ranging from $250 to $1,000, allowing drivers to choose how much they pay out-of-pocket when making a claim.

Uninsured motorist coverage protects you if you're in an accident with a driver who doesn't have insurance. Underinsured motorist coverage applies when the other driver's insurance doesn't cover all your damages. Many states require or strongly recommend these coverages. Different carriers may offer these at various coverage limits, and the program shows these options when providing quotes.

Additional coverage options may include roadside assistance, rental car reimbursement, and gap insurance. Roadside assistance helps with towing or lockout services. Rental car reimbursement covers the cost of a rental vehicle while yours is being repaired. Gap insurance covers the difference between your vehicle's value and what you owe on a loan if the car is totaled. Not all carriers offer all these options, so members see different add-on choices depending on which insurer they're reviewing.

Practical Takeaway: The program connects you with carriers offering standard auto insurance coverage including liability, collision, comprehensive, and uninsured motorist protection, with various coverage limits and deductibles to choose from.

Member Discounts and Savings Information

One of the main reasons members use Costco's Auto Insurance Connect program is the potential for discounts. Insurance carriers in the program often provide member discounts that may not be available to the general public. These discounts reflect Costco's ability to refer a large number of customers to insurance companies, which benefits the carriers. The relationship is mutually beneficial—carriers gain new customers, and Costco members gain access to special pricing.

The actual discount amounts vary depending on which insurance carrier you're working with and your personal situation. According to industry data, membership-based insurance discounts typically range from 5% to 25% off standard rates, though individual results vary significantly. A member's age, driving record, location, vehicle type, and selected coverage levels all affect how much discount they receive. Two members might see very different discount percentages based on these factors.

For example, a member in their 40s with a clean driving record in a suburban area might receive a different discount than a younger member in an urban location with a recent accident. Insurance carriers use detailed algorithms to calculate rates, and while the Costco membership may provide a discount, it's applied after considering all these individual risk factors. This is why quotes vary so much between different people and different carriers.

Some carriers in the program also offer additional discounts beyond the Costco member discount. These might include discounts for bundling auto insurance with home insurance, for having safety features on your vehicle, for completing defensive driving courses, for paying in full rather than monthly, or for low mileage. These secondary discounts are applied by the individual insurance carrier and vary by company. When you receive a quote, you can see what additional discounts that specific carrier offers.

The total savings depends on how you use the program. By receiving quotes from multiple carriers through one platform, you save time compared to contacting each company individually. The time saved can amount to several hours of research and phone calls. The financial savings from the member discounts can range anywhere from $50 to $500+ per year depending on coverage types and your personal situation, which is why comparing quotes from different carriers is valuable.

Practical Takeaway: Carriers in the program typically offer discounts to Costco members, though the amount depends on personal factors like age, driving record, and location. Comparing quotes from multiple carriers shows how much you might save.
