Driver License Services and Requirements

The Coos Bay DMV office issues and renews Oregon driver licenses for residents and visitors. New driver licenses in Oregon require several documents. Applicants must provide proof of identity (such as a passport or birth certificate), proof of Social Security number, and proof of residence (such as a utility bill or lease agreement). The office conducts a vision test as part of the issuance process. Applicants must also pass a written knowledge test covering traffic laws and driving safety, though this test may be taken online or at the office.

Driver license renewals follow different rules depending on a person's age and when their current license expires. Oregon allows online renewals for some drivers, but others must renew in person at a DMV office. Drivers over 50 years old cannot renew online and must visit an office. The vision test is required at each in-person renewal.

Oregon issues Real ID compliant licenses, which meet federal standards for identification when boarding airplanes or entering federal buildings. Real ID licenses have a gold star in the top right corner. Real ID license applications require additional documentation verification beyond a standard driver license.

The Coos Bay office also handles driver license suspensions, reinstatements, and corrections. If a license is suspended due to unpaid fines or other violations, the office can provide information about reinstatement requirements and processes.

Oregon vehicle registration costs depend on the vehicle's age, weight, and type. According to Oregon DMV data, registration fees range from approximately $80 for older vehicles to several hundred dollars for newer vehicles. Commercial vehicles and special-purpose vehicles have different fee structures. The office collects these fees when processing registration transactions.

Vehicle title documents prove ownership. Oregon issues both regular titles and electronic titles. The Coos Bay office processes title transfers, issues duplicate titles when originals are lost, and handles title corrections when information is wrong.

Vehicles registered in Oregon must display current license plates showing the registration year. When registration expires, new plates are issued. Specialty plates are available in Oregon, including environmental plates that show a green mountain symbol. These specialty plates cost more than standard plates but support specific causes or organizations.

The Coos Bay office can provide information about registration requirements for different vehicle types, including motorcycles, recreational vehicles, and commercial trucks. Each vehicle type may have different documentation or inspection requirements before registration is possible.

Identification Documents and ID Card Services

The Coos Bay DMV office issues state identification cards (commonly called ID cards) separate from driver licenses. A state ID card proves identity and age but does not grant driving privileges. State ID cards in Oregon are valid for 8 years for adults and can be used to board airplanes when the Real ID version is obtained.

State ID card applications require the same documentation as driver license applications: proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and proof of residence. The vision test is not required for ID cards, which is one difference from driver license issuance. The office takes a photograph for the ID card during the application process.

Real ID compliant ID cards are available through the Coos Bay office. These cards meet federal standards for air travel and federal building access. To obtain a Real ID ID card, applicants must provide original or certified copies of required documents, not photocopies. Birth certificates must be certified by the issuing vital records office.

Oregon also issues identification cards for seniors and people with disabilities. Senior ID cards are available to people age 62 and older. Disability ID cards are available to people with disabilities and provide information about the holder's needs in emergencies. These special ID cards have different requirements than standard state ID cards.

The Coos Bay office maintains a record of all ID cards issued. If a card is lost or stolen, a replacement can be requested at the office. Corrections to information on ID cards, such as a name change, require a new card to be issued.

Takeaway: The Coos Bay DMV office issues state identification cards for people who do not drive or whose driver licenses are suspended.
