Learn About Controlling Your Facebook Reels Feed

Understanding Facebook Reels and Your Feed

Facebook Reels are short video clips that appear in your Facebook feed, typically ranging from 15 seconds to 10 minutes long. These videos are similar to TikTok or Instagram Reels—they're designed to be entertaining, engaging, and easy to watch while scrolling. When you open Facebook, Reels may appear mixed in with traditional posts from your friends, family, and pages you follow.

The Facebook Reels feed is distinct from your regular feed in several ways. While your standard feed prioritizes content from people and pages you have direct connections with, Reels can be recommended to you based on your viewing habits, interests, and engagement patterns. Meta, Facebook's parent company, uses artificial intelligence to determine which Reels might interest you most. This means you might see content from creators you don't follow, accounts from different geographic locations, or topics you've never engaged with before.

Understanding how Reels function within your Facebook experience matters because it affects what you see when you open the app. As of 2024, Reels have become a central part of Facebook's content strategy. The platform has been pushing creators to produce Reels content, and it has been giving these videos prime placement in feeds. This shift means that if you don't adjust your preferences, Reels may dominate what appears when you scroll through Facebook.

Facebook offers several layers of control over your Reels feed. You can influence what types of Reels appear, adjust frequency settings, customize recommendations based on your interests, and hide content from specific creators. These controls exist because not every user wants Reels to be the primary focus of their Facebook experience. Some people prefer traditional posts from friends, while others want more variety in their feed composition.

Practical takeaway: Before attempting to control your Reels feed, spend time noticing what Reels currently appear in your feed. Take note of topics, creators, and types of content. This awareness will help you make better decisions about which controls to use.

Accessing Your Feed Preferences and Settings

Finding the right settings for controlling your Facebook feed requires navigating through Facebook's settings menu. Start by opening the Facebook app on your phone or visiting Facebook.com on your computer. The process differs slightly between devices, but the core settings are the same.

On mobile devices, look for the menu icon—typically three horizontal lines or a hamburger menu—usually located at the bottom right of your screen. Tap this to open the main menu. Scroll down until you find "Settings & Privacy," then tap "Settings." You'll see a list of categories including Account, Privacy, Notifications, and more. Look for sections labeled "Preferences," "Feed," or "Content." These sections contain controls related to what appears in your feed.

On desktop versions of Facebook, the process is similar. Click the downward-facing arrow or question mark icon in the top right corner of the page. Select "Settings and privacy," then "Settings." On the left side of the screen, you'll see a menu of options. Look for "Feeds" or "News Feed" options. Facebook's layout can change, so you may need to explore slightly different menu paths depending on when you're reading this guide.

Facebook also provides quick access to some feed preferences directly from your feed. When you see content you want to control, you can tap or right-click on that item to see options like "See less of this," "Hide," or "Not interested." These quick actions can adjust your feed without entering the full settings menu. Over time, using these quick options trains Facebook's algorithm about your preferences.

It's worth noting that Facebook periodically updates its interface. If you can't find the exact menu items described here, use the search function within Settings. Most versions of Facebook include a search bar where you can type "Reels" or "Feed" to jump directly to relevant settings. This can save time navigating through multiple menus.

Practical takeaway: Bookmark or screenshot the path to your Feed settings so you can quickly return to adjust preferences later without searching through multiple menus each time.

Controlling How Many Reels Appear in Your Feed

Facebook provides several methods to reduce the number of Reels that appear when you scroll your feed. The most straightforward approach involves adjusting your feed preferences to prioritize other content types. When you access Feed settings, look for options related to "Feed Type" or "Feed Priority." Some versions of Facebook let you choose between different feed layouts, such as "Home," "Favorites," or "Most Recent."

The "Favorites" option lets you select specific friends and pages whose content you want to see most often. When you use Favorites, Facebook prioritizes content from those selected sources and reduces the prominence of recommended content, including Reels from creators you don't follow. To set up Favorites, find the Favorites option in your Feed settings, then add the friends and pages that matter most to you. Facebook may show you suggestions based on your past interactions.

"Most Recent" feed settings show posts and content in chronological order rather than based on what Facebook's algorithm thinks you'll engage with most. This option generally results in fewer Reels, since Reels are often algorithm-recommended rather than from your direct connections. However, the Most Recent option may show you older content, which some users find less valuable than algorithm-sorted feeds.

Another method involves using the "See First" feature. When you visit a friend's or page's profile, you can select "See First" for that person or page. This makes their content appear higher in your feed. As you add more people and pages to "See First," their content takes up more feed space, leaving less room for recommended Reels.

You can also reduce Reels by interacting less with them. Facebook's algorithm tracks what you watch, how long you watch it, whether you pause, whether you share, and whether you comment. If you consistently scroll past Reels without watching them, Facebook will gradually show you fewer Reels. However, this passive approach takes time—sometimes weeks—to show noticeable results.

Practical takeaway: Try using the Favorites feature for one week and track whether your feed changes noticeably. This approach gives you concrete data about whether the setting is working for you before exploring other options.

Filtering Reels by Topic and Interest

Facebook tracks your interests based on everything you do on the platform—pages you follow, posts you like, content you comment on, videos you watch, and links you click. The platform uses this information to categorize your interests and recommend Reels related to those categories. You can see these interests and modify them directly through your settings.

Look for a section called "Interests" or "Ad Preferences" in your Facebook settings. This section typically shows you a list of interests Facebook has attributed to you. Common examples might include "Technology News," "Gardening," "Fitness," "Cooking," or "Music." Facebook generates these interests automatically, but you can remove any that don't reflect your actual preferences. Removing an interest tells Facebook to recommend less content related to that topic.

You can also add interests that Facebook may have missed. If you regularly enjoy Reels about a specific topic but Facebook hasn't identified it as one of your interests, you can add it manually. Some users do this strategically—adding a few core interests to narrow down what kind of Reels they see. For example, if you only want Reels about cooking and gardening, you might remove broader interests and keep only those two, which may result in more focused recommendations.

Another approach involves using content blocking features. Many versions of Facebook allow you to hide content from specific topics, keywords, or types of posts. If you notice you're seeing many Reels about a particular subject you don't enjoy, you might block that topic. Some users block keywords related to controversial subjects, celebrity gossip, or content they find disturbing.

It's important to understand that modifying your interests doesn't completely eliminate content from those categories—it reduces how often you see it. Facebook's algorithm is complex, and your feed is influenced by dozens of factors beyond just your stated interests. Changes to interest settings may take several hours or days to fully take effect as you see new Reels recommendations.

Practical takeaway: Review your current interests list and identify 2-3 interests you want to keep and 2-3 you want to remove. Make these changes, then return to review results after three days to see if your Reels feed changed in the direction you wanted.
