Natural gas service involves more than just billing. Customers may need to contact the company for service requests, safety concerns, billing questions, meter readings, account changes, or general information about gas service. The company maintains different contact channels depending on your need. Some requests can be handled through phone calls, while others may require online account access or in-person visits.

Customer Service Phone Numbers and Hours

Virginia Natural Gas operates a customer service phone line for account-related questions and general inquiries. The main customer service number is 1-877-572-3872. This number connects you to representatives who can help with billing questions, account information, service requests, and other customer concerns. The line is available during business hours, which typically run Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

For emergencies involving natural gas, the company maintains a 24/7 emergency line. If you smell gas, hear a hissing sound near gas lines, suspect a gas leak, or have other safety concerns, you should call the emergency number immediately. The emergency line is 1-877-572-3872 as well, with an automated system that routes emergency calls appropriately. During non-business hours, this line connects you to an emergency dispatcher who can respond to urgent situations.

When you call customer service, have your account number ready. This number appears on your monthly bill and helps representatives access your account information without delay. If you don't have your account number, the representative can look up your account using your name and service address. The call wait time varies depending on the time of day and call volume. Early morning or mid-week calls often have shorter wait times than late afternoon calls or Fridays.

Virginia Natural Gas also has a billing and account number service line. If you need general account information, billing details, or payment options, you can reach this line during regular business hours. Representatives can discuss your bill, explain charges, discuss payment arrangements, or provide information about your account status. They cannot usually process payment over the phone directly, but they can direct you to payment options.

For customers who prefer to speak with someone in person, Virginia Natural Gas has office locations in the service area. These offices maintain walk-in hours during business days. Having an office location gives customers another option beyond phone contact, particularly for complex issues or when customers prefer face-to-face interaction. Office locations are typically found in major cities within the service area.

Practical Takeaway: Save the customer service number (1-877-572-3872) in your phone and keep it near your bills for quick access. If you have a gas emergency—such as a strong gas smell—call immediately and follow the dispatcher's instructions while moving to fresh air. For non-emergency questions, calling early in the week often means shorter wait times.

Online Account Management and Digital Contact Options

Virginia Natural Gas offers an online account portal where customers can manage their accounts without calling. To access this portal, visit the Virginia Natural Gas website and look for the "Pay My Bill" or "My Account" section. Creating an online account requires your account number and some basic information from your most recent bill. Once registered, you can log in from any device with internet access.

Through the online portal, customers can view their current bill, check account balance, review billing history, and make payments. The portal displays your usage patterns, which helps you understand your natural gas consumption over time. Many customers find this information useful for identifying ways to use less gas or understanding seasonal changes in their usage. The online system updates regularly, so you can see your account status at any time.

The portal also allows you to update your personal information, such as phone number, email address, or mailing address. If your circumstances change—such as moving within the service area or changing your contact information—updating this online is faster than calling customer service. You can also sign up for paperless billing through the portal, which reduces mail and gives you immediate access to your bill.

Many utilities, including Virginia Natural Gas, now offer bill pay options through their online portal. You can schedule payments for specific dates, set up recurring payments, or make one-time payments using a bank account. The system typically processes payments within one to two business days. This online payment method is convenient and gives you control over when payments are made.

Virginia Natural Gas may also communicate with customers through email notifications if you opt in. These notifications can alert you to billing changes, service updates in your area, or seasonal reminders about safety. Email communication gives you information directly without waiting for a phone call or mail delivery. You control which notifications you receive through your account settings.

For customers without internet access or those who prefer written communication, Virginia Natural Gas maintains a mailing address. Written inquiries can be sent to the company's main office. Response times for mail are longer than phone or online contact, but this option remains available for customers who need it.

Practical Takeaway: Set up an online account with Virginia Natural Gas if you have internet access. This gives you 24/7 ability to check your bill, make payments, and update account information without waiting for business hours or speaking with a representative.

Service requests are another frequent contact reason. This includes new service installation for customers moving into an area served by Virginia Natural Gas, service upgrades for existing customers who want to expand gas access, or service disconnection when customers no longer need gas. The company schedules these requests and provides time windows for technicians to visit your property. Contacting the company well in advance of when you need service ensures they can accommodate your request.

Safety concerns warrant immediate contact. If you smell natural gas, hear unusual sounds near gas lines, suspect a leak, see exposed gas piping, or have other safety worries, contact the emergency line right away. Virginia Natural Gas takes safety seriously because natural gas leaks pose risks. Even if you're uncertain whether something is a real problem, it's better to call and have a professional investigate than to ignore a potential hazard.

Payment arrangement requests are handled by customer service. If you're having difficulty paying your bill on time due to financial hardship, the company may offer options such as extended payment plans or adjusted billing schedules. Contacting the company before missing a payment gives them opportunity to work with you on solutions. Many utility companies have programs designed to help customers manage costs during difficult times.

Account changes—such as updating your name, adding authorized users who can discuss your account, or changing your service address—require customer service contact. These changes ensure your account information stays current and accurate. If you're planning to move within the service area but want to keep gas service, contacting the company ahead of time allows them to transfer your service rather than disconnecting and requiring new application.
