Learn About Contacting the Department of Justice

Understanding the Department of Justice and Its Role

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is a federal agency that serves as the executive department responsible for enforcing the law and defending the interests of the United States. Established in 1870, the DOJ operates under the direction of the Attorney General, who is the chief law enforcement officer of the United States. The department employs approximately 115,000 people across various offices and divisions throughout the country.

The DOJ handles a wide range of legal matters affecting American citizens and businesses. These responsibilities include prosecuting federal crimes, representing the government in legal disputes, enforcing civil rights laws, overseeing the federal prison system, and providing legal opinions to the President and executive agencies. Understanding what the DOJ does can help you determine whether contacting them is appropriate for your situation.

The department is organized into multiple divisions, each handling specific areas of law. The Criminal Division prosecutes federal crimes. The Civil Division represents the United States in lawsuits. The Environment and Natural Resources Division handles environmental law matters. The Tax Division manages federal tax cases. The Civil Rights Division enforces laws protecting against discrimination. Each division has distinct contact procedures and purposes.

The DOJ also includes the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which investigates federal crimes and national security matters. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) combats drug trafficking. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) enforces federal firearms and explosives laws. U.S. Attorneys' Offices in 93 districts across the country handle federal prosecutions in their regions.

Practical Takeaway: Before contacting the DOJ, identify which division or bureau handles matters related to your situation. The DOJ website provides detailed descriptions of each division's responsibilities, which can help you determine the appropriate contact point.

For general inquiries that don't fall under a specific division, you can use the main contact number or visit the DOJ website at justice.gov. The website provides comprehensive information about different divisions, agencies, and how to reach specific offices. Most divisions maintain their own contact pages with direct phone numbers, mailing addresses, and email addresses for inquiries related to their particular areas.

When contacting the main office, have specific information ready about your inquiry. Explain clearly what your question or concern relates to, and provide relevant background details. This helps the staff member direct your call to the appropriate division more quickly. If you don't know which division handles your matter, the main line staff can often help route your call properly.

The DOJ also maintains a public affairs office that handles media inquiries and some general public questions. This office can be reached at 202-514-2007. If your question relates to a specific DOJ action or announcement, the public affairs office may be able to provide information or direct you to the appropriate resource.

For written inquiries, you can mail correspondence to the main headquarters address. Include your contact information, a clear description of your matter, and any relevant documents. Mail delivery typically takes several days, so allow additional time for processing. Email contact information varies by division, and most divisions provide specific email addresses on their individual websites.

Practical Takeaway: Start by visiting justice.gov and identifying the specific division related to your matter. This targeted approach is more effective than calling the main line, as it connects you directly to the relevant office without unnecessary transfers.

This division typically does not handle individual tax complaints, which are better directed to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). However, if you have concerns about significant tax fraud or illegal tax schemes, you can contact the Tax Division at 202-514-2901.

The Civil Division represents the United States in legal disputes involving contracts, property rights, and other civil matters. Contact information varies by type of claim. Practical Takeaway: Each DOJ division has specialized functions and different contact procedures. Match your concern to the appropriate division by reviewing descriptions on the DOJ website, then use that division's direct contact information rather than going through general inquiries.
