Learn About Common Chevy Trax Engine Issues

Understanding Common Chevy Trax Engine Problems

The Chevrolet Trax is a compact crossover SUV that has been in production since 2013. While generally considered reliable, certain model years and engine configurations have experienced recurring issues that owners should understand. The Trax typically comes with one of two engine options: a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or, in earlier models, a 1.6-liter engine. Learning about these potential issues can help you monitor your vehicle more effectively and recognize problems early.

Engine problems in vehicles like the Trax often stem from manufacturing defects, design limitations, or maintenance issues that develop over time. The Trax has accumulated complaints across multiple model years, with some issues affecting hundreds of vehicles. According to reports filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), engine-related complaints for the Trax span from 2013 through recent model years. Common categories include stalling, excessive oil consumption, timing chain problems, and power loss during acceleration.

Understanding these issues matters because engine problems can range from minor inconveniences to serious safety concerns. A stalling engine in traffic creates hazardous conditions. Excessive oil consumption may indicate internal engine wear that requires costly repairs. Timing chain failures can cause catastrophic engine damage. By familiarizing yourself with known Trax engine issues, you can better communicate with mechanics, track your vehicle's performance, and make informed decisions about maintenance and repairs.

The information in this guide covers issues documented by owners, mechanics, and automotive databases. This knowledge allows you to observe your own vehicle's behavior, ask targeted questions during service appointments, and understand what mechanics are discussing. Keep records of any symptoms you notice and share these with your service technician.

Timing Chain and Tensioner Failures

One of the most serious engine issues affecting certain Chevy Trax models involves the timing chain and tensioner system. The timing chain synchronizes the crankshaft and camshaft rotation, controlling when the engine's valves open and close. A tensioner keeps appropriate tension on the chain. When either component fails, severe engine damage can result quickly.

Reports indicate that some 2013-2015 Trax models with the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine experienced premature timing chain wear and tensioner failure. Symptoms include a rattling noise from the front of the engine, particularly during cold starts or acceleration. Some owners reported these noises beginning around 40,000 to 80,000 miles, which is well before typical timing chain service intervals. When the chain stretches excessively or the tensioner fails, the chain can skip teeth on the sprockets, causing the engine to run poorly or stop running entirely.

The consequences of timing chain failure extend beyond stopping the vehicle. If the timing becomes sufficiently misaligned, the pistons can strike the valves, causing bent valves, damaged cylinder heads, and internal engine destruction. Repairs can cost $2,000 to $4,000 or more, depending on the extent of damage. Some owners have experienced timing chain failure under warranty coverage, while others faced substantial out-of-pocket costs after warranty expiration.

If you own a Trax with higher mileage or one of the affected model years, listen for timing chain rattle. Have your mechanic inspect the timing chain system if you notice this sound. Regular oil changes are important because dirty oil can affect how well the tensioner functions. Keep detailed maintenance records and report any unusual noises to your dealer promptly.

Excessive Oil Consumption Issues

Excessive oil consumption represents a recurring complaint among Chevy Trax owners, particularly those with turbocharged engines. Normal engine oil consumption varies by vehicle, but manufacturers typically expect engines to use about one quart per 1,000 to 3,000 miles under normal driving conditions. Some Trax owners report consuming one quart or more every 500 to 1,000 miles, indicating a problem significantly above normal parameters.

Several potential causes contribute to excessive oil consumption in the Trax. The most common include worn piston rings, valve seal degradation, and PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system malfunctions. Piston rings create a seal between the piston and cylinder wall, preventing oil from entering the combustion chamber. As rings wear, oil leaks past them and burns in the engine, reducing oil levels. Valve seals prevent oil from coating the valve stems and entering the combustion chamber from the top of the engine. When these seals deteriorate, similar oil burning occurs.

Owners have reported this issue appearing at varying mileage points, with some experiencing excessive consumption as early as 20,000 miles and others around 60,000 miles. Symptoms include frequent oil level warnings, visible smoke from the exhaust (particularly during acceleration or deceleration), and the need to add oil between scheduled oil changes. The problem appears more common in models from 2013-2017, though reports exist for newer model years as well.

Address oil consumption by checking your oil level regularly—at least monthly and before long trips. Keep receipts documenting oil additions. If your Trax consumes oil excessively, document the mileage intervals and amounts, then discuss findings with a mechanic who can perform a formal oil consumption test. Some owners have had engines replaced or repaired under warranty by documenting this pattern.

Engine Stalling and Rough Idling Problems

Engine stalling and rough idling have affected multiple Chevrolet Trax model years. Stalling occurs when the engine suddenly loses power while driving or at a stop. Rough idling refers to engine vibration and instability when the vehicle is stationary with the engine running. These issues compromise vehicle safety and create frustration for owners, particularly when stalling occurs in traffic.

The causes of stalling in the Trax vary and can include fuel system issues, ignition system problems, air intake complications, or electronic control unit (ECU) malfunctions. Some owners reported that their Trax would stall during acceleration, while others experienced stalling at stops or while shifting gears. Rough idling often accompanies stalling issues, with owners describing vibration, hesitation, or the engine nearly cutting off before resuming normal operation.

Reports filed with NHTSA indicate stalling complaints across model years 2013-2019. In some cases, dealerships addressed the issue through software updates to the engine control computer. In other cases, mechanics replaced fuel filters, cleaned fuel injectors, or addressed ignition coil problems. The challenge with stalling issues is that they sometimes occur intermittently, making diagnosis difficult. An engine may run perfectly during a test drive with a technician, then stall unexpectedly when you drive it home.

If your Trax experiences stalling or rough idling, note the specific conditions when it occurs—during acceleration, at stops, in cold weather, or after the engine has warmed up. Record the mileage and any warning lights displayed on the dashboard. Share this detailed information with your mechanic, as it helps narrow down potential causes. Request that your dealership check for available software updates, as these often resolve driveability issues in modern vehicles.

Turbocharger and Power Loss Issues

The turbocharged 1.4-liter engine in many Chevy Trax models offers good fuel efficiency but has generated some complaints regarding power delivery and turbocharger longevity. A turbocharger uses exhaust gases to spin a turbine that forces more air into the engine, increasing power and efficiency. When functioning properly, you experience a boost of power when accelerating. When turbochargers malfunction, you notice reduced acceleration and poor performance.

Some Trax owners have reported turbocharger failure or degradation, with symptoms including power loss during acceleration, unusual noises from the engine (whining or grinding sounds), and increased exhaust smoke. These issues have appeared across multiple model years. Turbocharger problems can stem from carbon buildup in the turbo, bearing wear, seal failure, or oil starvation. Because turbochargers operate at extremely high temperatures and speeds, maintenance lapses can quickly lead to failure.

Power loss complaints extend beyond turbocharger issues. Some owners reported that their Trax would experience hesitation or stumble during acceleration, particularly when merging on highways or passing other vehicles. Mechanics have attributed these issues to various causes including clogged fuel injectors, dirty air filters, faulty mass airflow sensors, and ECU programming. In some cases, software updates from Chevrolet resolved the power loss problem.
