Learn About Chase Credit Card Rewards Expiration

Understanding Chase Credit Card Rewards Programs

Chase offers several credit card products that come with rewards programs, allowing cardholders to earn points, miles, or cash back on purchases. Each Chase credit card has its own rewards structure, and understanding how these programs work is the first step in learning about rewards expiration policies.

Chase's main rewards programs include Ultimate Rewards (used across most Chase cards), which lets you earn points on every purchase. Some cards earn a flat rate, like 1.5 points per dollar spent on all purchases, while others earn higher rates in specific categories such as dining, travel, or groceries. Chase also offers co-branded travel rewards cards that earn airline miles or hotel points instead of general-purpose points.

The cash back option is another rewards format. Some Chase cards offer a percentage of cash back on all purchases, while others provide rotating categories that change quarterly and offer higher cash back rates (typically 1% to 5%) in certain spending areas. For example, a card might offer 5% cash back on rotating categories that the cardholder must activate each quarter.

Understanding your specific rewards structure matters because different programs have different expiration rules. A card that earns Ultimate Rewards points may have different expiration terms than a co-branded airline card. Before you can understand expiration policies, you need to know which rewards program your card participates in. You can find this information on your card's welcome materials, the Chase website, or by calling the number on the back of your card.

Practical Takeaway: Identify which Chase card you hold and locate the rewards program name. Write down whether you earn points, miles, or cash back, as this determines what expiration rules apply to your account.

Chase Ultimate Rewards Points and Their Expiration Policy

Chase Ultimate Rewards is the rewards program used by many of Chase's premium and standard credit cards. The program's expiration policy is one of the more cardholder-friendly options in the credit card industry. According to Chase's terms, Ultimate Rewards points do not expire as long as your account remains open and in good standing.

This means that if you keep your Chase credit card account open and continue to make purchases or at minimum keep the account active (sometimes just using it occasionally), your points will stay in your account indefinitely. The key requirement is that your account must not be closed and must not fall into an inactive or delinquent status. This is significantly different from many other credit card rewards programs that impose expiration dates on points regardless of account status.

However, there is one important exception to this no-expiration policy: if you close your Ultimate Rewards account, your points will typically expire. Chase allows a grace period, usually around 60 days after closing an account, during which you can still redeem your points. If you don't redeem them within this window, they are forfeited. This means if you decide to close a card permanently, you should first identify all your points and redeem them before the account closure takes effect.

Additionally, if your account becomes severely delinquent or is closed due to violation of card terms, Chase may have the right to forfeit your rewards. The standard scenario, however, is that responsible cardholders with open accounts enjoy unrestricted point retention. Some cardholders have held Chase Ultimate Rewards accounts for 10, 15, or even 20+ years, accumulating points throughout without expiration concerns.

Practical Takeaway: If you hold a Chase Ultimate Rewards card, your best strategy is to keep the account open even if you're not using it frequently. Make occasional purchases or ensure minimal account activity to maintain "in good standing" status, and your points will remain indefinitely.

Chase Travel and Co-Branded Card Rewards Expiration

Chase also issues co-branded credit cards through partnerships with airlines and hotel chains. These cards earn airline miles or hotel points instead of general-purpose Ultimate Rewards points. The expiration rules for these rewards differ significantly from the Ultimate Rewards program and deserve special attention.

Chase co-branded airline cards, such as those affiliated with United, Southwest, or American Airlines, typically earn airline miles. The expiration policy for these miles is often determined by the airline partner, not by Chase directly. Most major airlines have policies stating that miles expire if there is no account activity for a certain period, typically 18 to 24 months. Account activity usually includes purchasing airline tickets, redeeming miles, transferring miles, or sometimes even just earning miles through credit card spending.

This means that if you hold a United Airlines Chase card and don't use your United miles account for 18 months, those miles may expire even though you're keeping your Chase credit card open. To prevent this, you need to maintain activity in the miles account itself, which you can do by using the miles, having miles posted to your account through credit card spending, or transferring miles to an airline partner.

Hotel co-branded cards work similarly. Cards partnered with brands like Marriott Bonvoy, Hyatt, or IHG earn hotel points, and these points typically expire after 12 to 24 months of inactivity in the hotel loyalty program. Simply keeping the Chase card open is not sufficient; you must have activity in the actual hotel rewards account. This might include staying at a hotel, transferring points, or redeeming points during the specified period.

The distinction is crucial: holding the Chase card is different from maintaining activity in the underlying airline or hotel program. A cardholder might have an active Chase card account but lose their accumulated miles or points if they don't use the airline or hotel loyalty program regularly.

Practical Takeaway: If you hold a Chase co-branded airline or hotel card, check the partner program's website to understand their specific expiration rules. Mark your calendar to take at least one qualifying action (like booking a flight, redeeming miles, or making a hotel stay) within their inactivity window to protect your accumulated rewards.

Chase Cash Back Cards and Cash Rewards Expiration

Chase also offers credit cards that provide cash back rewards instead of points or miles. These cash back cards have their own expiration considerations that differ from point-based programs. Understanding how cash back expiration works is important for maximizing the value of these cards.

Most Chase cash back cards allow you to earn cash back that does not expire. This includes cards that offer flat-rate cash back, such as 1.5% cash back on all purchases, or cards that offer higher rates in rotating categories. As long as your account remains open in good standing, your cash back balance typically does not expire. This is similar to the Ultimate Rewards points policy.

However, there's a critical distinction between earned cash back and promotional cash back offers. Many Chase cash back cards come with sign-up bonuses, such as "$200 cash back after you spend $500 in the first three months." These promotional bonuses have specific terms and conditions. While the ongoing cash back you earn through regular spending typically doesn't expire, promotional bonuses must often be claimed or used within a certain timeframe. If you don't meet the spending requirements to earn the bonus, you simply won't receive it—it doesn't expire waiting in an account; it's never credited in the first place.

Additionally, some Chase cash back cards allow you to redeem your cash back in different ways: as a statement credit, as a deposit to a bank account, or through other redemption options. If there are specific promotional terms tied to how you redeem cash back (such as "earn 5% back for 12 months"), these promotional periods do have end dates. Once the promotional period expires, the cash back rate may drop to a lower standard rate.

It's also worth noting that if you close a Chase cash back card account, any unredeemed cash back balance may be forfeited after a grace period, similar to the Ultimate Rewards points policy. Therefore, before closing an account, redeem any remaining cash back balance.

Practical Takeaway: Track any cash back sign-up bonus offers and note their spending requirements and deadlines. For ongoing cash back earnings, keep your account open to prevent expiration, and periodically redeem your cash back to avoid losing it if you eventually close the account.

How Account Status Affects Rewards Expiration

The relationship between your credit card account status and rewards expiration is more complex than simply "keep the card open." Chase has specific definitions of what "account in good standing" means, and understanding these definitions helps you protect your rewards.
