Learn About CDL Licenses and Why They Matter

What Is a CDL License and Who Needs One

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a special type of driver's license issued by individual states that allows someone to operate large commercial vehicles. Unlike a regular driver's license, a CDL comes with additional requirements, testing, and responsibilities. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) sets federal standards that all states must follow, though each state manages its own CDL program.

A CDL is required to operate vehicles that fall into certain categories based on weight and cargo type. The main vehicles that require a CDL include semi-trucks (also called tractor-trailers or 18-wheelers), buses that transport more than 15 passengers, and trucks carrying hazardous materials. Some smaller commercial vehicles may not require a CDL depending on their gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR)—generally, vehicles over 26,001 pounds require a CDL. School bus drivers need a CDL with a special school bus endorsement. Tank truck drivers hauling liquids need a tanker endorsement. Drivers operating doubles or triples (multiple trailers) need specific endorsements as well.

According to the FMCSA, there are roughly 3.5 million CDL holders in the United States. The trucking industry relies entirely on these drivers to move goods across the country. Beyond trucking, other professions requiring a CDL include public transportation bus drivers, waste management drivers, and drivers of specialized commercial vehicles.

A regular driver's license is not legal for operating these commercial vehicles, even if someone has many years of driving experience in personal vehicles. Operating a commercial vehicle without the proper CDL is a violation of state and federal law and can result in significant fines, vehicle impoundment, and criminal charges.

Practical Takeaway: Determine the specific weight and cargo type of any vehicle you plan to operate. If the vehicle exceeds weight thresholds or carries certain materials, you will need a CDL. Check your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website for specific vehicle classifications in your state.

The Three Classes of CDL Licenses Explained

The CDL system divides commercial vehicles into three classes based on the vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and whether it tows other vehicles. Understanding these classes is important because the type of vehicle you want to operate determines which class of CDL you need to obtain.

Class A CDL is the most general commercial license and covers the broadest range of vehicles. A Class A CDL allows you to operate any combination of vehicles with a combined GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the vehicle being towed weighs more than 10,000 pounds. This means Class A covers semi-trucks pulling trailers, doubles, and triples. Most long-haul trucking jobs require a Class A CDL. Class A is considered the highest level of CDL and opens the most job opportunities in the transportation industry.

Class B CDL covers single vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more that are not towing another vehicle, or any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more that is towing a vehicle weighing 10,000 pounds or less. Examples include straight trucks (box trucks), dump trucks, concrete mixers, and some delivery trucks. Class B is often used for local or regional driving rather than long-distance routes. Many bus drivers operate under a Class B CDL with a passenger endorsement.

Class C CDL is used less frequently and covers vehicles not falling into Class A or B but that still require a CDL. This typically includes vehicles carrying hazardous materials or vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver). Class C is less commonly pursued because most hazmat drivers or passenger drivers also fall under Class A or B categories.

The class you pursue affects your training pathway, testing requirements, and the types of jobs you can legally perform. Employers often specify which class they need, and some positions may require upgrading from one class to another as career responsibilities change.

Practical Takeaway: Identify the specific vehicles you will drive and research their GVWR to determine which class of CDL matches your career goals. A Class A CDL provides the most flexibility and job options, while Class B may suit regional or specialized driving roles.

Endorsements and Restrictions: What You Need to Know

Beyond the basic CDL class, endorsements and restrictions modify what a CDL holder can legally do. An endorsement is an additional certification that permits operation of certain vehicle types or cargo. Restrictions limit what can be driven. Knowing which endorsements apply to your driving goals is essential for legal operation and career advancement.

Common endorsements include:

• Hazmat (H) — allows transport of hazardous materials. Requires background check and TSA security screening. This endorsement involves additional federal requirements beyond state testing.
• Tanker (N) — required for driving tanker trucks that carry liquids or gases. Different handling procedures apply to these vehicles.
• Passenger (P) — required for buses carrying more than 15 passengers. School bus drivers typically need this endorsement.
• School Bus (S) — specifically for driving school buses. Requires additional training on student safety and passenger management.
• Doubles/Triples (T) — allows towing multiple trailers. Some states use a single endorsement; others distinguish between doubles and triples.

Common restrictions include:

• Air Brake Restriction (Z) — if someone fails the air brake portion of testing, this restriction prevents operation of vehicles with air brakes.
• Automatic Transmission Restriction (E) — if tested in a vehicle with automatic transmission, the license may restrict operation to automatic-only vehicles.
• No Passengers Restriction — some CDL holders cannot transport passengers even if they hold a passenger endorsement.

Endorsements typically require additional testing beyond the standard CDL exam. For example, the hazmat endorsement involves a written test and federal security background screening. Some endorsements also require specific on-the-job training before a driver can operate those vehicle types independently.

The trucking industry's highest-paying positions often require multiple endorsements. A driver with Class A, hazmat, and tanker endorsements has access to specialized jobs that pay more than standard freight driving. Conversely, a driver with a restriction may find fewer job opportunities available.

Practical Takeaway: Research the endorsements and restrictions that align with your target job positions. If your long-term goal requires hazmat or tanker endorsements, plan to obtain these certifications as part of your career development. Avoid unnecessary restrictions by preparing thoroughly for the air brake test if you want to operate vehicles with air brakes.

CDL Testing Requirements and What to Expect

Obtaining a CDL involves multiple testing stages. This process is more rigorous than testing for a regular driver's license because the risks associated with operating large commercial vehicles are significantly higher. Most states follow similar testing structures, though specific procedures and pass rates may vary slightly.

The testing process generally includes three main components:

Knowledge Tests (Written Exams) are administered at your state's DMV or testing facility. You must pass a general knowledge test covering traffic laws, vehicle operation, and safety practices specific to commercial driving. The general test typically has 50 questions, and you usually need to score at least 80% to pass. If pursuing endorsements, additional knowledge tests are required for each one. For example, hazmat testing covers regulations specific to dangerous cargo transport. These tests evaluate your understanding of federal and state regulations, not just practical driving ability.

Skills Tests include both pre-trip vehicle inspection and on-road driving evaluation. The pre-trip inspection test requires you to walk around a commercial vehicle and identify its major components while explaining their function and condition to an examiner. You must demonstrate knowledge of safety-critical items like brakes, lights, mirrors, coupling devices, and cargo securing systems. This portion typically lasts 15-20 minutes. The on-road
