Learn About California DMV Address Change Options

Understanding California DMV Address Change Requirements

When you move to a new address in California, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) needs to know about it. This is not optional—it is a legal requirement. California Vehicle Code Section 14600 states that a driver must notify the DMV within 10 days of changing their residence address. Similarly, vehicle registration records must reflect your current address within the same timeframe.

The reason behind this requirement is straightforward: the DMV uses address information to send you important documents, including renewal notices for your driver's license and vehicle registration. If your address on file is incorrect, you may miss critical notices and deadlines. Additionally, if you are involved in a traffic accident or receive a traffic citation, law enforcement needs your correct address to contact you properly. Insurance companies also rely on your DMV address to process claims and determine rates.

California has specific rules about what counts as a change of address. Moving within the state requires notification. If you move from another state to California, you must update your address and vehicle registration within a certain timeframe. Even if you change your address multiple times within a short period, each change should be reported to the DMV. Rental situations, such as moving from one apartment to another, are treated the same as permanent moves—the DMV still needs notification.

It is important to note that your driver's license address and your vehicle registration address do not have to be the same. However, both should be current and accurate. Some people maintain a mailing address separate from their residence address, and California DMV allows for this distinction in certain circumstances.

Practical Takeaway: Understand that updating your address with the California DMV is a legal requirement, not an option. You have 10 days from the date you move to complete this change. Failing to do so can result in penalties, missed renewal notices, and complications if you are involved in a traffic incident.

Online Address Change Through the California DMV Website

The California DMV offers an online address change option that many residents find convenient. You can update your driver's license address through the official California DMV website at dmv.ca.gov. This online service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which means you can make the change at any time that works for your schedule.

To use the online service, you will need specific information. You must provide your California driver's license or identification card number, your date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number. You will also enter your new address. The system will verify your identity using this information before allowing you to proceed. Once you have submitted the form, the DMV processes the change, and your new address is typically reflected in their system within one to two weeks.

One advantage of the online method is that there is no fee. You do not need to pay anything to change your address online. Additionally, you do not need to visit a DMV office, which can save significant time. During busy seasons, DMV offices can have long wait times, sometimes exceeding two hours. By handling the change online, you avoid this entirely.

However, the online method has limitations. You can only change your driver's license address through this method—not your vehicle registration address. If you need to update your vehicle registration address, you will need to use a different method, which is described in the sections below. Additionally, if your driver's license is expired or will expire within a certain timeframe, you may not be able to use the online service and may need to visit an office instead.

The online system also requires that you have access to a computer or mobile device with internet access. If you do not have reliable internet access, other methods may be more suitable for your situation.

Practical Takeaway: The online address change option through dmv.ca.gov works well for updating your driver's license address only. It is free, available around the clock, and typically processes within one to two weeks. Use this method if your driver's license is current and you primarily need to update your personal address record.

In-Person Address Change at DMV Field Offices

Visiting a California DMV office in person remains a traditional but reliable way to change your address. This method works for both your driver's license and vehicle registration. When you visit an office, you can handle multiple address-related tasks in one appointment, which can be more efficient than making separate trips or using multiple methods.

To change your address in person, you will need to bring certain documents. At minimum, you need a valid form of identification, such as your current driver's license or identification card. You should also bring proof of your new address. The DMV accepts various documents as proof of residency, including utility bills, lease agreements, mortgage statements, bank statements, government tax documents, or California vehicle registration. These documents must show your name and new address, and they typically must be dated within a recent timeframe, often within the last 60 days.

When you arrive at the office, you will typically need to take a number from the ticketing system and wait for your turn. Wait times vary by location and time of day. Visiting early in the morning, on weekdays rather than weekends, or during slower seasons can reduce your wait time. Some DMV offices have more traffic than others—offices in rural areas generally have shorter waits than those in urban centers.

The cost of changing your address in person depends on what you are updating. If you are only updating your driver's license address and your license is not expiring, there is typically no fee. However, if you need to renew your driver's license at the same time, you will pay the applicable renewal fee, which is currently $42 for a five-year license or $72 for an eight-year license. Vehicle registration address changes may involve fees depending on your registration type and whether you are making other changes simultaneously.

One benefit of the in-person visit is immediate verification. The DMV staff can confirm that your address change has been processed before you leave the office. You will receive a new or updated document showing your correct address. This immediate confirmation can be valuable if you need proof of your new address for other purposes, such as opening a bank account or updating insurance.

Practical Takeaway: Visiting a DMV office in person allows you to update both your driver's license and vehicle registration addresses in one visit. Bring valid identification and proof of your new address dated within 60 days. Expect potential wait times, and plan to visit during off-peak hours if possible to minimize delays.

Mail-In Address Change Options and Forms

California DMV allows you to change your address by mail, which is useful if you live far from an office, have mobility limitations, or prefer not to visit in person. This method works specifically for driver's license address changes. The process involves obtaining the correct form, completing it, and mailing it to the DMV along with any required documents.

The form you need is DL 43 (Change of Address). You can obtain this form by visiting the DMV website and printing it, by calling the DMV to request it be mailed to you, or by picking one up at any DMV office. The form requires you to provide your current driver's license information, your new address, and your signature. You must also include a copy of your proof of residency document, such as a utility bill or lease agreement.

When mailing your change of address request, send it to the address listed on the DMV website for your specific region. California has multiple regional processing centers, and sending your form to the correct address ensures faster processing. The mailing address varies depending on whether you are in Northern California, Central California, or Southern California. Using the wrong address can delay your request by several weeks.

Processing time for mail-in requests is typically longer than other methods. You should expect the change to be processed within three to four weeks from the date the DMV receives your form. This means accounting for postal transit time in both directions. To track whether your request has been received, you can call the DMV's customer service line and provide your driver's license information.

One important consideration is that mail-in submissions carry the risk of documents being lost in transit. While the U.S. Postal Service is generally reliable, there is always a small chance your envelope could be lost. Some people choose to use certified mail with return receipt to have proof that their documents arrived. This adds a small cost but provides peace of mind.

The mail-in method is free—there is no fee for changing your address by mail. This makes it an attractive option for people looking to avoid any costs associated with the address change process.
