Learn About Buying Used Accessible Vans

Understanding Accessible Van Types and Features

An accessible van is a vehicle modified to accommodate people with mobility challenges or disabilities. These vans come in different styles, each designed for specific needs. The most common types include side-entry vans, rear-entry vans, and transfer vans. Understanding the differences helps you determine which style matches your situation.

Side-entry accessible vans feature a hydraulic lift or ramp on the passenger side. The wheelchair user can remain in their chair while the lift raises them to vehicle level. These vans typically have the driver's seat on the left and the accessible seating area on the right. Side-entry vans are popular because they allow for faster boarding and work well in most parking situations.

Rear-entry vans have the lift or ramp positioned at the back of the vehicle. A wheelchair user enters from behind the van, usually with assistance. These vans often provide more interior space since the lift doesn't take up side room. However, rear-entry models require backing into accessible parking spaces, which some people find less convenient.

Transfer vans are designed for people who can walk short distances or transfer from a wheelchair to a regular car seat. These vans typically have grab bars, wider doors, and lowered floors. They cost less than full wheelchair-accessible vans because they don't require expensive lift systems.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 3.5 million Americans use wheelchairs, and many rely on accessible vehicles. Used accessible vans typically range from $15,000 to $45,000 depending on age, mileage, and features. Popular manufacturers include Braun, Freedom Motors, VMI (Vans by Maas), and Mobility Ventures.

Practical takeaway: Before shopping, identify which van type matches your needs. Consider whether you use a wheelchair full-time, need to transfer to a car seat, or require space for a caregiver. This narrows your search significantly and saves time.

Evaluating the Mechanical Condition of a Used Accessible Van

Buying a used vehicle requires checking its mechanical health, and accessible vans need additional scrutiny. The lift or ramp system represents a major expense if it fails. Before purchasing any used accessible van, obtain a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic familiar with both standard vehicles and accessibility equipment.

Start by reviewing the vehicle's maintenance history. Ask the seller for service records documenting regular oil changes, filter replacements, and repairs. Look for patterns of recurring problems, which might indicate larger mechanical issues. A vehicle with consistent maintenance records is generally a better investment than one with gaps in service history.

Test the lift or ramp system thoroughly. Operate it multiple times in both directions to ensure smooth, consistent movement. Listen for unusual noises like grinding, squeaking, or hydraulic fluid leaks. A professional inspection should include checking hydraulic fluid levels, inspecting seals for leaks, and verifying that safety features work properly. Lift repairs typically cost $2,000 to $8,000 depending on the problem.

Examine the van's overall structure for rust, particularly around the modified areas. Accessible vans often have structural modifications that can be vulnerable to corrosion. Check door seals, window caulking, and roof areas where water might enter. Rust damage can be costly to repair and may indicate the vehicle wasn't well-maintained.

Consider the engine's age and mileage. Most vans are considered reliable up to 150,000 miles if properly maintained, though some reach 200,000 miles. However, higher mileage increases the likelihood of transmission problems, engine issues, and other expensive repairs. A vehicle with 80,000 to 100,000 miles typically offers a good balance between price and remaining lifespan.

Request a vehicle history report using the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). Services like Carfax and AutoCheck show previous accidents, title issues, and service records. This information helps you understand what the van has been through before you consider buying it.

Practical takeaway: Never skip the pre-purchase inspection. Budget $150 to $300 for a thorough mechanical check by a qualified technician. This investment often saves thousands in unexpected repairs and gives you confidence in your purchase decision.

Understanding Lift and Ramp Systems

The lift or ramp system is the most critical component of an accessible van. These systems allow wheelchair users to board independently or with minimal assistance. Understanding how they work helps you evaluate their condition and anticipate maintenance needs.

Hydraulic lifts are the most common type. They use pressurized fluid to raise and lower a platform. A small electric motor powers the hydraulic pump. When you press a button, the pump forces hydraulic fluid through tubes and into cylinders, raising the platform. When you release the button, a control valve allows the fluid to drain, lowering the platform. Quality hydraulic lifts can function reliably for many years, but seals wear over time and leaks become more likely.

Ramps work differently than lifts. A powered ramp extends outward from the van's door, creating a gradual incline rather than a vertical lift. Ramps are simpler mechanically than lifts and tend to require less maintenance. However, they take up more space inside the van and work only on level ground. Manual ramps, operated without electricity, exist but are rarely seen on modern accessible vans.

Scooter lifts are specialized lifts designed to accommodate motorized scooters. These lifts typically hold heavier loads than wheelchair lifts—often 400 pounds or more compared to 300-350 pounds for standard wheelchair lifts. If you use a motorized scooter, verify that the lift is rated for your equipment's weight.

Check the lift control system carefully. Modern systems use wireless remote controls, allowing users to operate the lift from outside the van. Older systems use corded remotes or dash-mounted switches. Wireless systems offer more convenience but are more expensive to replace if damaged. Verify that the remote functions properly and that spare batteries work.

Ask about the lift's service history. Some lifts require annual inspections and certification, while others need servicing only when problems occur. Preventive maintenance—such as checking hydraulic fluid levels and inspecting seals—can extend the lift's lifespan significantly. A lift that has been regularly serviced is likely more reliable than one that has been neglected.

Practical takeaway: Test the lift or ramp at least five times during your inspection. Listen for hesitation, grinding sounds, or slow operation. Ask the seller about the last time the lift received professional service and whether any parts have been replaced recently.

Calculating Total Cost of Ownership

The purchase price of a used accessible van is only part of the financial picture. Understanding the full cost of ownership helps you make a realistic budget and avoid financial surprises.

Insurance costs for accessible vans run higher than standard vehicles. A typical auto insurance policy for a used van costs $100 to $200 per month, but accessible vans may cost 10 to 20 percent more due to their higher replacement value and specialized equipment. Contact insurance companies before purchasing to get quotes. Some companies offer discounts for drivers with clean records or for paying in full annually.

Fuel costs depend on the van's size and engine efficiency. Full-size accessible vans typically get 15 to 20 miles per gallon, while smaller vans may achieve 20 to 25 miles per gallon. If you drive 12,000 miles per year at an average fuel price of $3.50 per gallon, expect to spend $2,100 to $2,800 annually on fuel.

Maintenance and repairs are significant expenses. Budget $500 to $1,500 annually for regular maintenance like oil changes, filter replacements, and tire rotations. Unexpected repairs can exceed $2,000. Lifts and ramps occasionally need professional servicing, which may cost $300 to $800. Setting aside $200 per month for maintenance provides a safety buffer.

Registration and licensing fees vary by state. Some states charge higher fees for vehicles over a certain age or weight. Check your state's vehicle registration authority for specific costs. In some cases, vehicles registered to people with disabilities may qualify for fee reductions, though this varies by location.

Consider warranty options. Many used vehicle dealers offer limited warranties covering engine and transmission issues. Extended warranties are available but should be evaluated carefully—they
