Learn About Building Wheelchair Ramps Over Steps

Understanding Wheelchair Ramp Basics and When They're Needed

A wheelchair ramp is an inclined surface that allows people using wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and other mobility devices to move between different levels. Unlike stairs, which create barriers for wheelchair users and people with mobility challenges, ramps provide a gradual slope that makes transitions safer and more independent.

Ramps become necessary in many situations. A home with front steps, a business with an entrance threshold, a deck with a drop-off, or a porch with a single step all benefit from ramp installation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 61 million adults in the United States live with a disability. Many of these individuals rely on mobility aids that ramps accommodate. Beyond wheelchair users, ramps help people using crutches, canes, walkers, crutches, parents pushing strollers, and delivery personnel moving hand trucks.

The need for ramps isn't always permanent. Someone recovering from surgery, dealing with a temporary injury, or caring for an elderly relative may need a ramp for a limited time. Others require permanent solutions. Understanding your specific situation helps determine what type of ramp makes sense for your space and needs.

Ramps also serve a practical purpose beyond accessibility. They reduce strain on joints and muscles, decrease fall risk on stairs, and allow people to maintain independence in their own homes and communities. Businesses that install ramps often find they serve a broader customer base, including people with temporary injuries, elderly visitors, and parents with strollers.

Practical Takeaway: Before planning a ramp, identify the height difference you need to bridge and consider whether you need a temporary or permanent solution. Measure the vertical rise (the height difference between levels) as this measurement drives all other ramp decisions.

ADA Compliance Standards for Residential and Commercial Ramps

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sets specific technical standards for ramps in public and commercial spaces. Understanding these standards matters because they represent what accessibility experts have determined works safely and effectively for people with mobility disabilities. While residential ramps have different requirements than commercial ones, knowing the standards helps you build safely regardless of your setting.

The most important ADA standard involves slope, which is expressed as a ratio. The maximum slope for commercial ramps is 1:12, meaning for every 12 inches of horizontal distance, the ramp rises 1 inch vertically. For a ramp to span a 12-inch height difference, it needs to be at least 12 feet long. For a 24-inch rise, you need a minimum of 24 feet of ramp length. This might seem long, but the gentle slope prevents users from losing control, reduces strain, and makes the ramp usable for people with various mobility levels.

Additional ADA standards include:

• Minimum width of 36 inches for single-user passage (48 inches preferred for two people to pass)
• Handrails on both sides when the ramp rises more than 6 inches or is longer than 6 feet
• Handrails must be between 34 and 38 inches high and extend 12 inches beyond the top and bottom of the ramp
• Edge protection (curbs or barriers) to prevent people from rolling off the sides
• A landing area at least 5 feet by 5 feet at the top and bottom of the ramp for users to rest and maneuver
• Non-slip surface material to prevent sliding in wet conditions
• Adequate drainage so water doesn't pool on the ramp surface

For residential ramps, local building codes vary, but many communities recommend following ADA standards even though they're not legally required for private homes. A 1:12 slope works better for most users than steeper alternatives. Some residential situations allow 1:8 slopes (steeper) if space is extremely limited, but this creates challenges for people with certain disabilities and increases the risk of accidents.

The ADA also addresses ramp landings—the flat areas where ramps change direction or meet a building entrance. These landings prevent users from having to turn while on a slope and provide rest areas for people who tire easily. A minimum 5-foot by 5-foot landing allows a wheelchair user to turn 180 degrees if needed.

Practical Takeaway: Before building, check your local building codes and ADA requirements. Use the 1:12 slope ratio as your planning standard: divide your vertical rise in inches by 12 to find the ramp length needed. For example, a 24-inch rise requires a 24-foot ramp.

Calculating Ramp Length and Planning Your Layout

Proper ramp planning starts with accurate measurements and calculations. The relationship between rise, run, and slope determines whether your ramp will be usable and safe. This calculation process takes time but prevents building mistakes that require costly corrections.

Begin by measuring the vertical distance (rise) between your starting point and ending point. For example, if your front door is 18 inches higher than your ground level, your rise is 18 inches. Use a level and measuring tape for accuracy. Measure from the ground to the bottom of the door threshold, not the door itself.

Once you know your rise, calculate the run (horizontal distance needed) using the 1:12 ratio. Multiply your rise by 12. An 18-inch rise requires 18 × 12 = 216 inches of ramp length, which equals 18 feet. This seems substantial, but it ensures a gentle, safe slope.

With your length and rise, you can now plan your layout. Consider these factors:

• Does your yard have enough space for a straight ramp? If not, plan switchback ramps (ramps that change direction) with landings between sections
• What's the existing terrain? Steep yards need more foundation work than relatively flat areas
• Where will drainage flow? Plan so water doesn't pool on the ramp or flow toward buildings
• What obstacles exist? Trees, utilities, sidewalks, and existing structures influence ramp placement
• Which side of the entrance works best? Consider sun exposure, wind, and proximity to parking areas

Switchback ramps are common solutions when straight ramps are impractical. A switchback creates a 180-degree turn with a landing between two ramp sections. If you need an 18-foot ramp but only have 9 feet of straight space, you could build two 9-foot sections in a switchback pattern with a 5-foot by 5-foot landing between them.

Many people sketch their ramp layout on paper before ordering materials or digging. Simple graph paper drawings help visualize the project. Mark your existing structures, measure available space, and draw your ramp sections to scale. This planning step often reveals problems early when they're cheap to fix conceptually rather than after construction.

Practical Takeaway: Calculate your ramp length by multiplying the vertical rise (in inches) by 12. Sketch your planned layout on paper, accounting for available space, drainage patterns, and obstacles. This prevents mistakes and helps you understand what materials and labor you'll need.

Ramp Materials and Construction Methods

Wheelchair ramp construction uses several material options, each with different costs, durability, and maintenance requirements. Choosing the right material depends on your climate, budget, timeline, and whether you're building a temporary or permanent ramp.

Pressure-Treated Wood: Wood is the most common residential ramp material. Pressure-treated lumber resists rot and insects. A typical wood ramp uses 2×8 or 2×10 boards for the main support beams, with 2×6 boards for the ramp deck. Wood ramps are relatively affordable ($1,500 to $4,000 for small residential ramps) and can be built by people with basic carpentry skills. However, wood requires regular maintenance—staining or sealing every few years, replacing damaged boards, and ensuring fasteners don't rust. Wood can become slippery when wet, requiring anti-slip tape or coating.

Aluminum: Aluminum ramps are lightweight, low-maintenance, and
