Learn About Becoming a U.S. Postal Service Mailman

Overview of Postal Service Careers and the Mailman Role

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is one of the largest employers in the country, with over 600,000 employees working across thousands of locations nationwide. A mail carrier, often called a mailman or mailwoman, is one of the most visible positions within the organization. These workers deliver mail and packages to residential and business addresses throughout their assigned routes, typically covering the same neighborhoods day after day.

Mail carriers represent the front line of the postal service. They handle approximately 160 million pieces of mail daily across the United States. Beyond simply delivering letters, modern mail carriers also distribute packages from online retailers, collect outgoing mail from mailboxes, and sometimes handle customer inquiries or complaints. The job has evolved significantly with the rise of e-commerce, making package delivery a substantial part of the work.

The position exists in different variations depending on location and assignment. City carriers work in urban and suburban areas, often on foot or using small vehicles. Rural carriers cover less densely populated areas and typically use their own vehicles or USPS-provided trucks. Highway contract routes involve driving longer distances between delivery points. Each variation has different pay scales and working conditions, though all require similar foundational skills.

Employment with USPS offers several advantages that attract thousands of applicants each year. The position provides stable, government employment with benefits typically including health insurance, retirement plans through the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS), and job security protections. Starting salaries for mail carriers typically range from $35,000 to $42,000 annually, with experienced carriers earning $55,000 to $65,000 or more depending on location and tenure.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding the basic structure of mail carrier positions—including the different types of routes and employment terms—helps you determine whether this career path aligns with your work style and life circumstances.

Educational and Basic Requirements for the Position

The USPS has established minimum requirements that all mail carrier candidates must meet. First and foremost, candidates must be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or GED (General Educational Development) certificate. These requirements exist to ensure candidates have basic literacy, numeracy, and work maturity. The high school diploma or GED requirement hasn't changed in decades because the job involves reading addresses, managing routes, and following postal regulations.

United States citizenship or permanent resident status is mandatory. You must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident to work for a federal agency. This requirement applies to all USPS positions. The agency may request documentation such as a birth certificate, passport, or green card during the hiring process to verify this status.

A valid driver's license is essential for mail carrier positions. Since delivering mail involves driving a vehicle—whether a personal car for rural routes or a USPS-provided vehicle for city routes—the ability to operate a vehicle legally is non-negotiable. Some positions, particularly city carrier roles, may have less emphasis on driving skills, but rural and contract route positions depend heavily on driving ability. Your driving record will be reviewed, and previous violations may affect consideration for certain positions.

While formal education beyond high school is not required, possessing certain skills increases competitiveness during the hiring process. Strong reading comprehension helps with understanding delivery instructions and address details. Basic math skills support managing package weights, calculating fees, and handling customer transactions. Organizational ability matters because carriers manage multiple packages and pieces of mail daily, often delivering hundreds of items on a single route.

The USPS doesn't require prior postal or delivery experience. The agency trains new hires on all procedures, systems, and safety protocols. Many successful mail carriers come from entirely different career backgrounds. What matters more is demonstrating reliability, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.

Practical Takeaway: If you have a high school diploma or GED, are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and hold a valid driver's license, you meet the foundational requirements to explore mail carrier positions further.

The Hiring Process and Postal Exams

The USPS hiring process is structured, methodical, and different from most private sector jobs. It begins with the Postal Service Exam 473/473-C (for most mail carrier positions) or Exam 460 (for rural carrier positions). These standardized tests measure specific job-related competencies rather than general knowledge. The exams are designed to evaluate whether candidates can perform the actual duties of the position.

The 473/473-C exam has several sections. The Address Checking section presents two addresses and asks whether they're identical or different—testing attention to detail, a critical skill for mail carriers who must verify addresses daily. The Forms Completion section requires candidates to fill out postal forms accurately, mirroring real workplace tasks. The Coding and Memory sections test the ability to organize information and recall details quickly. These sections can be challenging because they're designed specifically to predict job performance, not general intelligence.

Candidates take the exam at designated testing locations, usually administered by USPS or approved testing centers. The exam typically takes around 90 minutes. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100, with most positions requiring a minimum passing score around 70. However, because many applicants pass, competition for positions remains high even for those who score well. Veterans receive additional points added to their scores—typically 5 or 10 points depending on disability status—which can significantly improve their standing on hiring lists.

After passing the exam, candidates enter a waiting list organized by score and location. The USPS then reviews applicants as positions open, conducting background investigations that include criminal history checks, driving record reviews, and employment verification. This phase can take weeks or months. The agency may contact references and previous employers. A medical examination and drug screening typically occur once a position is offered, though before final employment begins.

Throughout the process, USPS communicates primarily through email and mail. Candidates should regularly check both their email and physical mailbox for updates on their status. The hiring timeline varies significantly by location—some positions fill quickly in competitive urban areas, while rural positions may move faster in areas with fewer applicants.

Practical Takeaway: Preparing for the postal exam through practice tests and understanding the multi-stage hiring process reduces surprises and helps you present your strongest application. The process typically takes several months from exam to job offer, so planning accordingly is important.

Understanding Physical and Mental Job Demands

Mail carrier work is physically demanding. Carriers walk an average of 10 to 15 miles during a typical shift, often while carrying bags or cases of mail weighing 20 to 30 pounds. This occurs regardless of weather conditions—carriers work during rain, snow, extreme heat, and cold. Over the course of a day, carriers may lift and carry thousands of pieces of mail and dozens of packages, some weighing 50 pounds or more. The repetitive nature of reaching, bending, and lifting can lead to strain injuries if proper techniques aren't used.

Different route types present different physical challenges. City carriers typically walk their routes, climbing stairs in apartment buildings and walking sidewalks for miles. Rural carriers drive between addresses but must exit their vehicles hundreds of times daily. These stop-and-start movements, combined with driving, create their own physical demands. The job requires good cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. Carriers must be able to work effectively in hot summers and cold winters without significant reduction in pace or accuracy.

Vision and hearing requirements exist to ensure worker safety and job performance. Carriers must be able to read addresses clearly and hear traffic and warning signals. While corrective lenses or hearing aids are acceptable, the underlying ability to see and hear adequately is essential. The medical examination during hiring evaluates these capabilities.

Beyond physical demands, mail carrier work requires mental focus and problem-solving. Carriers work independently for much of their day, managing their routes without close supervision. They must follow complex sorting and delivery sequences, recall routes and regular customer preferences, and adapt when routes change or unexpected issues arise. The position requires concentration to ensure accuracy—a misdelivered piece of mail inconveniences a customer, and consistent errors can lead to disciplinary action.

Customer interaction adds a social and emotional dimension. Carriers regularly speak with homeowners, business owners, and package recipients. They handle complaints about mail, answer questions about postal services, and sometimes provide assistance to elderly or disabled customers. This requires patience, communication skills, and the ability to remain professional in challenging situations.

Practical Takeaway: Honestly assess your physical abilities and comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions.
