Learn About Amtrak Train Vacation Packages Across America

Overview of Amtrak Train Vacation Packages

Amtrak operates passenger rail service across the United States, connecting over 500 destinations through a network of long-distance and regional routes. The railroad company offers pre-planned vacation packages that bundle train travel with accommodations, meals, and guided experiences at various stops along the journey. These packages differ from standard point-to-point train tickets because they include multiple elements organized into a single booking, often at rates lower than purchasing each component separately.

As of 2024, Amtrak offers approximately 15 to 20 vacation package itineraries throughout the year, though availability and specific routes vary by season. Packages range from 5-day regional trips to 14-day cross-country journeys. The prices vary significantly based on route length, cabin type, time of year, and included amenities. For example, a 5-day package in the Northeast might start around $1,500 to $2,500 per person, while a 14-day cross-country package could range from $4,000 to $8,000 or more depending on accommodations selected.

These packages appeal to travelers seeking a slower-paced vacation experience that emphasizes scenery, comfort, and the journey itself rather than rapid destination changes. Unlike flying or driving, train travel allows passengers to move about freely during the day, enjoy dining with other travelers, and wake up at different locations without the fatigue associated with long drives. Many routes traverse regions known for natural beauty, including mountainous terrain, coastal areas, and scenic river valleys.

Popular Amtrak Vacation Routes and Destinations

The Empire Builder, one of Amtrak's most famous long-distance routes, travels 2,224 miles from Chicago to Seattle over 46 hours. This route passes through the Great Plains, Montana, and the Cascade Mountains. A typical vacation package on this route includes stops in destinations such as St. Paul-Minneapolis, Glacier National Park (via West Glacier, Montana), and Portland. Passengers enjoy views of prairie grasslands, the Columbia River Gorge, and mountain peaks. The package usually features sleeping accommodations in either coach seating or private sleeping cars, meals in the dining car, and guided excursions at select stops.

The Coast Starlight operates along the West Coast, running 1,377 miles from Los Angeles to Seattle over 35 hours. This route showcases California's coastline, the San Francisco Bay area, Oregon's forests, and the Puget Sound near Seattle. Vacation packages on this route often include overnight accommodations, dining car meals, and stops in destinations like Santa Barbara and Portland. Many travelers choose this route specifically for viewing the Pacific Ocean from the train and experiencing the changing landscapes from Southern California's deserts to Pacific Northwest forests.

The Southwest Chief covers 2,171 miles between Chicago and Los Angeles, passing through Kansas, Colorado, and Arizona over approximately 43 hours. This route includes views of the Rocky Mountains, the New Mexico high desert, and the Grand Canyon region (near Williams, Arizona). Packages typically offer stops in cities like Denver and Albuquerque, with accommodations and dining included. The scenery appeals to travelers interested in American Southwest landscapes and Native American cultural sites accessible from route stops.

The Crescent connects New York City to New Orleans over 1,377 miles, traveling through the Appalachian Mountains, the Deep South, and ending at the Mississippi River. This route passes through cities including Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Birmingham. Vacation packages emphasize cultural experiences, Southern cuisine, and historical sites in cities along the route. The journey takes approximately 32 hours, making it suitable for travelers with less vacation time who still want a multi-day experience.

Shorter regional packages also operate in areas like the Northeast Corridor (connecting Boston, New York, and Washington D.C.) and California routes. These typically run 3 to 5 days and may be marketed as weekend getaways or holiday-themed trips during specific seasons.

Practical Takeaway: Compare routes based on your geographic interests and available vacation time. Review detailed day-by-day itineraries on Amtrak's website to understand what sightseeing opportunities and stops occur during daylight hours versus overnight travel.

Understanding Accommodation Types and Cabin Options

Amtrak vacation packages offer different accommodation categories that significantly affect both the price and experience of your journey. Coach seating represents the most economical option, featuring reclining seats in a shared car with other passengers. Coach accommodations include access to a lounge car with panoramic windows, dining car meals (included on long-distance routes), and basic onboard amenities. While less private than other options, coach provides a social environment where travelers interact with other passengers throughout the journey. For budget-conscious travelers or those who spend most daytime hours away from their seating area, coach can be a practical option.

Roomette cabins are the entry-level sleeping accommodations, featuring two seats that convert into a bed at night, a small lavatory, and access to shared shower facilities located at the end of each sleeping car. Roomettes typically accommodate two adults or one adult and one child. These cabins provide private space, though they are compact—approximately 40 square feet. Roomettes cost roughly double the price of coach seating but provide privacy and a place to rest during travel. Many travelers find roomettes suitable for 2 to 4-day journeys, though comfort on longer trips depends on personal preference regarding space.

Bedroom cabins offer significantly more space and amenities compared to roomettes, featuring a bed, a sofa, a private lavatory, a shower, and windows. Bedrooms typically accommodate two to three people and range from approximately 60 to 80 square feet depending on the train. These accommodations allow more storage space for luggage and personal items. The private shower is particularly valued by travelers on longer journeys, as it reduces dependence on shared facilities. Bedrooms cost approximately three to four times more than coach seating but provide substantially enhanced comfort and privacy.

Bedroom suites, available on select premium routes, combine multiple cabin spaces into a larger suite with sitting areas, more sleeping arrangements, and expanded bathroom facilities. These options appeal to families traveling together or groups seeking a more luxurious experience. Suite pricing reflects their premium nature, often exceeding coach prices by five times or more.

All sleeping car passengers receive complimentary dining car access, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meals in the dining car are included in your package pricing and typically feature multi-course offerings prepared onboard. Coach passengers may purchase dining car meals separately or use the cafe car, which offers light fare and beverages at additional cost.

Practical Takeaway: Evaluate your travel priorities—if you'll spend substantial time outside your accommodation exploring stops, coach or roomette may offer better value. If privacy and shower access matter significantly for your comfort on journeys longer than 4 days, consider bedroom accommodations.

Meal Plans, Dining, and Onboard Services

Amtrak's vacation packages include meals as a core component, differentiating them from regular ticket purchases. Sleeping car passengers receive full dining car service, which means all breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals during your journey are included in your package price. The dining car operates on a multi-course format, with menus that change daily and reflect regional ingredients and culinary traditions relevant to the route. For example, a Southwest Chief package includes dishes featuring Southwestern flavors, while a Coast Starlight package emphasizes Pacific seafood and California produce.

Typical dining experiences include a hot breakfast selection (such as eggs, pancakes, or oatmeal), a lunch menu with entree options and side dishes, and a dinner service with multiple main courses, appetizers, and desserts. Dietary restrictions and preferences are accommodated when noted during booking—vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-friendly meals are available, though you should communicate these needs in advance. The dining car serves as both a restaurant and a social hub where solo travelers often meet other passengers during meals, creating opportunities for conversation and shared travel experiences.

Beverage service differs between sleeping car passengers and coach passengers. Sleeping car passengers receive complimentary coffee, tea, juice, and water in the dining car. Alcoholic beverages (wine, beer, and cocktails) are available
