Learn About Adding Your Known Traveler Number to Delta

Understanding Known Traveler Numbers and TSA PreCheck

A Known Traveler Number, commonly called a KTN, is a unique identifier assigned to travelers who have been vetted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This number connects you to TSA PreCheck, a program that allows passengers to move through airport security checkpoints more quickly. When you have a KTN associated with your airline frequent flyer account, the TSA recognizes you at the airport and may allow you to go through expedited security screening.

The TSA PreCheck program has been operating since 2011 and has processed millions of travelers. According to TSA data, PreCheck members spend an average of 5 minutes or less in security lines, compared to standard screening times that often exceed 20 minutes during peak travel periods. The program requires a background check and in-person appointment at a TSA enrollment center, which typically costs $78 to $85 for a five-year membership.

When you enroll in TSA PreCheck, you receive a Known Traveler Number that is valid for five years from the date of your enrollment. This number becomes the key to accessing faster security lanes at U.S. airports. The KTN is not automatically added to airline accounts—you must manually enter it into each airline's reservation system where you want to use the benefit.

Delta Air Lines recognizes TSA PreCheck and has integrated the program into its reservation system. Delta flyers with a KTN can link their number to their SkyMiles frequent flyer account, which then applies the PreCheck benefit to their ticket records across multiple bookings and reservations.

Practical Takeaway: Before adding your KTN to Delta, verify that you have completed your TSA PreCheck enrollment and received your Known Traveler Number. This nine-digit number is essential and cannot be substituted with your enrollment receipt or application number. Keep your KTN in a safe location for future reference.

How to Locate Your Known Traveler Number

Your Known Traveler Number appears on several official documents and accounts related to your TSA PreCheck enrollment. Finding your KTN is straightforward once you know where to look. The most reliable source is the official TSA website at tsa.gov, where you can access your enrollment record through the TSA PreCheck portal using your enrolled identification document.

To access your KTN through the TSA website, you will need to provide your date of birth, citizenship information, and the state that issued your identification document. The system will verify your identity and display your nine-digit Known Traveler Number on screen. You can then write down this number or take a screenshot for your records.

Another location where your KTN appears is on the approval letter you received when you completed your TSA PreCheck enrollment. This official letter came in the mail after your background check was approved and shows your number clearly near the top of the document. If you have this letter, you can reference it directly without needing to access the online portal.

Your enrollment card, which is a separate document from the KTN letter, may also display your number. Some TSA enrollment centers provide printed cards with your information. Additionally, if you enrolled through a trusted traveler program partner like Clear, Global Entry, or SENTRI, your KTN might be listed in those program accounts as well.

For those who cannot locate their number through these methods, the TSA customer service line can provide assistance. You can contact the TSA directly at 1-844-787-2227. Be prepared to provide identification information to confirm your enrollment status. Response times vary, but the TSA typically handles inquiries during business hours, Monday through Friday.

Practical Takeaway: Collect your KTN from the TSA official website or your enrollment approval letter and store it in a secure location. Having your number readily available makes the process of adding it to your Delta account straightforward and prevents delays when you need to enter it during ticket bookings.

Steps to Add Your KTN to Your Delta SkyMiles Account

Adding your Known Traveler Number to your Delta SkyMiles frequent flyer account involves accessing your account settings through Delta's website or mobile application. The process takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes and can be completed from home at any time. Delta makes this feature available to all SkyMiles members, regardless of elite status or membership tier.

First, visit the Delta Air Lines website at delta.com and log in to your SkyMiles account using your username and password. If you do not have a SkyMiles account, you will need to establish one before proceeding. Creating a SkyMiles account is free and takes about 5 minutes. You will need to provide your name, address, date of birth, and contact information.

Once logged into your SkyMiles account, navigate to the account settings or profile section. Different versions of the website may label this section differently—look for options such as "My Account," "Profile," "Settings," or "Preferences." This section typically appears in a menu at the top of the page or in a dropdown associated with your name or account icon.

Within the profile or account settings area, locate the security or trusted traveler section. This is where you will find fields for adding known traveler program numbers. Delta's interface specifically includes a section for "TSA PreCheck" or "Known Traveler Number." Click on the field and enter your nine-digit KTN exactly as it appears on your TSA approval documentation or enrollment records.

After entering your KTN, review the information for accuracy before submitting. Even small typos in your number can prevent the TSA from recognizing you during check-in. Once you confirm the information is correct, select the option to save or update your profile. Delta will display a confirmation message indicating that your Known Traveler Number has been added to your account.

If you are using the Delta mobile app, the process is similar. Log in to your SkyMiles account within the app, navigate to your profile or settings, and locate the TSA PreCheck or trusted traveler information field. Enter your KTN and save the changes. The app will synchronize this information with your online account.

Practical Takeaway: After adding your KTN, wait at least one business day before your next Delta flight to allow the system to process and communicate your information to airport security systems. This ensures that TSA PreCheck recognition is active when you arrive for check-in.

What Happens After Adding Your KTN to Delta

Once your Known Traveler Number is linked to your Delta SkyMiles account, the information is transmitted to Delta's reservation system and reflected on your e-tickets. When you book a flight through Delta's website, mobile app, or through a travel agent, your KTN association means that your ticket will include a TSA PreCheck indicator. This indicator alerts TSA officers at the airport that you are an enrolled PreCheck member.

At the airport, you will see this benefit reflected in two main ways. First, some airports display separate TSA PreCheck security lanes designated specifically for enrolled members. These lanes typically have shorter lines and a more streamlined screening process. Second, even at airports without dedicated PreCheck lanes, TSA officers can identify you as a PreCheck member through your ticket and direct you to an expedited screening process within the standard lane.

During expedited screening, you are generally able to keep your shoes, light jacket, and belt on while passing through security. You may leave your laptop and liquids in your carry-on bag, rather than removing them for separate inspection. Your carry-on bag does not need to be opened for examination in most cases. These differences can reduce your time in the security area considerably, particularly during busy travel periods.

It is important to understand that TSA PreCheck benefits apply only when your KTN is properly linked to the ticket you are using for travel. If you book a flight under a different name, use a companion ticket, or book through a third-party website without properly transferring your KTN information, you may not receive PreCheck screening. Always verify that your name on the ticket matches the name used when you enrolled in TSA PreCheck.

Your KTN remains valid for five years from your enrollment date. As your expiration date approaches, the TSA will send you renewal information. You will need to complete a new enrollment and background check to receive a new KTN. After renewal, you should update your Delta SkyMiles account with your new number to maintain continuous access to PreCheck benefits.
