Learn About AARP Travel Discounts and How They Work

Understanding AARP Travel Discounts: An Overview

AARP offers a collection of travel-related discounts through partnerships with hotels, rental car companies, airlines, and other travel services. These discounts are available to AARP members who are age 50 and older. The program works by connecting members with negotiated rates from travel companies that have agreed to provide reduced pricing to the AARP membership base.

According to AARP's membership data, the organization has more than 37 million members in the United States. Many of these members use travel discounts as a regular part of their vacation planning. The discounts vary by partner and season, meaning the amount you may save depends on which company you book with and when you travel.

AARP travel discounts are not the same as other discount programs. Unlike some travel websites that aggregate deals, AARP's discounts come directly from the companies themselves through established partnerships. This means the rates are often built into the booking system rather than requiring special coupon codes or promotional materials.

The discounts cover a wide range of travel categories. Members may find reduced rates on hotel stays, car rentals, cruises, vacation packages, and travel insurance. Some discounts apply nationwide while others are regional. Certain discounts may change seasonally or based on availability.

Practical takeaway: AARP members should review the travel section of the AARP website or magazine to see which current partnerships are active. The available discounts and partner companies change periodically, so checking before planning a trip helps identify which discounts apply to your specific travel needs.

Hotel Discounts and Room Rates

Hotel discounts represent one of the largest categories of AARP travel offerings. Major hotel chains including Choice Hotels, Hilton, Marriott, and Wyndham have partnered with AARP to provide member discounts. The discounts typically range from 5 percent to 10 percent off standard room rates, though some promotions may offer higher savings during specific periods.

Choice Hotels, which operates brands like Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, and Clarion, has been one of the longest-standing AARP partners. Members can book directly through the AARP website, the hotel chain's website using a special AARP rate code, or by phone. When booking through these channels, the system should automatically apply the member discount if the AARP membership number is provided at the time of reservation.

Marriott International operates numerous hotel brands including Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance, and Courtyard. AARP members may receive discounts on standard room rates through Marriott Bonvoy, the company's loyalty program. The discount amount can vary based on the specific property, location, and time of booking.

Hilton Honors members who are also AARP members may qualify for reduced rates at Hilton properties. Hilton operates brands such as DoubleTree, Hampton, and Waldorf Astoria. Similar to other major chains, the discount is typically applied when the AARP membership information is included in the reservation.

When booking a hotel room, it's important to understand that advertised rates may vary. A room that costs $150 per night at standard rate might cost $135 with a 10 percent AARP discount. However, promotional rates, package deals, or other special offers might sometimes be lower than the standard AARP-discounted rate. Comparing different booking options helps identify the best rate for your specific travel dates.

Practical takeaway: When planning a hotel stay, request the AARP rate explicitly during booking, whether online or by phone. Provide your AARP membership number and ask about any current promotions that might apply. Comparing the AARP-discounted rate against other available rates for the same dates helps ensure you're getting the best price for your stay.

Car Rental Discounts and How to Use Them

Car rental companies represent another major category of AARP travel partnerships. Companies including Enterprise, Hertz, Budget, and Avis have agreements with AARP to provide member discounts. These discounts typically range from 5 percent to 25 percent depending on the company and specific rental agreement. The variation in discount rates reflects different partnership structures and promotional periods.

Enterprise has offered one of the most widely available car rental discounts for AARP members. Members can receive discounts on daily rates when renting through AARP's website or by using a specific discount code provided to members. The discount applies to most vehicle classes, though premium or specialty vehicles may have different pricing structures.

Hertz offers AARP member discounts through its Gold Plus Rewards program. Members can book online or call Hertz directly to access these rates. Hertz also occasionally runs promotions combining AARP discounts with other offers, such as a percentage off combined with free upgrades to higher vehicle classes.

Budget and Avis, both operated by the same parent company, provide AARP discounts to members who book through the companies' websites or by phone. Members typically need to provide their AARP membership number at the time of booking to receive the discount.

Car rental discounts work differently than hotel discounts in several ways. The daily rate is where the discount applies most directly, but additional fees such as airport surcharges, insurance, and fuel charges typically aren't discounted. A rental that costs $40 per day at the standard rate might cost $32 per day with a 20 percent AARP discount, but an airport fee of $15 per day would still apply at the full rate.

Practical takeaway: When renting a car, provide your AARP membership number early in the booking process. Request the AARP rate specifically, and review the total rental cost including all fees and charges. Comparing quotes from multiple rental companies helps determine which combination of base rate and fees offers the best overall value for your rental period.

Airline Discounts and Travel Packages

AARP partnerships with airlines take different forms than hotel or car rental discounts. Rather than offering percentage discounts on all fares, airlines typically provide AARP members with special offers on select routes, times, or packages. Southwest Airlines, for example, has offered promotional codes and special fares to AARP members at various times throughout the year.

Unlike car rentals where a simple percentage off the daily rate is common, airline discounts operate within the context of dynamic pricing. Airlines change ticket prices constantly based on demand, time of booking, and other factors. An AARP offer might provide $25 or $50 off select flights, or it might offer a specific discount code that applies to certain departure times or routes.

AARP also partners with cruise lines including Cruise.com and other travel package companies to offer group rates or promotional pricing for members. These cruise discounts may include onboard credits, reduced base fares, or packages bundling the cruise with hotel stays before or after the cruise. Cruise pricing, like airline pricing, involves many components including cabin selection, dining packages, and excursions.

Travel insurance represents another component of AARP's airline and travel package offerings. AARP provides information about travel insurance options that may help cover trip cancellations, medical emergencies, baggage loss, and other travel-related issues. Travel insurance costs vary based on trip length, destination, and coverage level selected.

AARP also publishes information about travel packages combining flights, hotels, and activities through partnerships with travel companies. These packages may offer savings compared to booking each component separately. Package pricing depends on the specific destinations included and the time of year for travel.

Practical takeaway: Check AARP's travel section regularly for current airline and cruise promotions, as these change frequently. When shopping for flights or cruise travel, look for AARP-specific promotional codes or partner offers. Compare package deals against the cost of booking each component separately to determine which approach offers better value for your specific travel plans.

Special Discounts on Attractions and Activities

Beyond lodging and transportation, AARP partnerships extend to attractions, activities, and entertainment venues. Museums, theme parks, theaters, and tour companies offer reduced admission prices to AARP members. These discounts typically range from 5 percent to 20 percent off regular admission prices, though some venues offer deeper discounts during specific periods.
