Learn About AARP Membership Requirements and Benefits

Understanding AARP Membership Basics

AARP is a nonprofit organization created to serve people aged 50 and older. The organization focuses on providing information, resources, and services related to health, finances, and lifestyle topics that matter to people in this age group. AARP membership opens access to various programs and discounts that members can use throughout their lives.

The organization was founded in 1958 and has grown to include millions of members across the United States. AARP operates at the national level but also has state and local chapters that offer community-specific programs and events. The membership structure is straightforward: individuals pay an annual fee to join and receive membership benefits for that year.

AARP membership is not the same as receiving government benefits. Instead, it's a membership in a private organization that offers discounts and information services to its members. The organization does not determine who receives Social Security, Medicare, or other government programs. Members work directly with government agencies for those programs.

The organization provides a magazine called AARP Magazine that comes to members' homes, offers a website with health and lifestyle articles, and maintains a presence on social media where members can find information. AARP also partners with various businesses to offer member discounts on products and services like travel, insurance, and entertainment.

Practical Takeaway: AARP is a membership organization for people 50 and older. Think of it as joining a club that provides discounts, information resources, and community connections rather than as a government program.

Age Requirements for AARP Membership

The primary requirement to become an AARP member is being at least 50 years old. This age threshold applies to individual memberships. A person does not need to be retired to join AARP—many working people who are 50 and older maintain AARP memberships.

The 50-year-old age requirement has been consistent since AARP's inception. The organization chose this age because it represents a time in many people's lives when they begin thinking about retirement planning, health concerns become more prominent, and life circumstances often shift. Research shows that people in this age group have distinct needs and interests that differ from younger populations.

AARP also offers memberships for spouses. If one spouse is 50 or older and joins AARP, the other spouse can join at a reduced rate, even if that spouse is under 50 years old. This family membership option has been available for many years and allows couples to access certain member benefits together.

There are no other age-based restrictions beyond the minimum age of 50. People in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond all pay the same membership fee. A person who joins at 50 can maintain their membership for life if they continue paying annual dues. There is no upper age limit for membership.

The organization also offers junior memberships for people between the ages of 18 and 49 in some cases, though these are less common and may have different benefits structures than standard memberships.

Practical Takeaway: You must be at least 50 years old to join AARP as an individual member. Your spouse can join at a reduced rate even if they are younger than 50.

How to Become an AARP Member and Membership Costs

Becoming an AARP member involves contacting the organization and providing basic personal information. Most people complete this process online through AARP's website, though members can also join by phone or mail. The process requires providing your name, address, date of birth, and email address. You'll need to create a password to access the member portal online.

AARP charges annual membership dues. As of recent years, the standard membership fee is $16 per year for new members in their first year, and $24 per year for renewal memberships in subsequent years. This pricing has remained relatively stable over time. Some people get discounts through employer programs or group memberships—for instance, some large companies offer AARP memberships to their employees at reduced rates.

Payment methods are flexible. Members can pay online using a credit card or debit card, or they can pay by check through the mail. Many members set up automatic renewal payments so their membership continues each year without them needing to remember to renew manually. This automatic payment feature helps prevent lapses in membership.

Once someone joins and pays their membership fee, they immediately receive a membership card and online access to member resources. The membership card can be used at participating businesses to receive discounts. Members receive their magazine in the mail, typically arriving bimonthly. Online access to articles, resources, and member-only content becomes available right away.

AARP occasionally runs promotional offers where new members might receive a lower first-year rate or additional benefits like a free gift with membership. These promotions vary throughout the year, so the timing of when someone joins can affect what they receive with their membership.

Practical Takeaway: Joining AARP involves providing basic information and paying annual dues of $16 for the first year and $24 thereafter. You can join online, by phone, or by mail.

Major Member Benefits and Services

AARP memberships include access to a wide range of discounts and information resources. One major category of benefits involves health and wellness information. Members can access articles and resources about managing chronic conditions, staying physically active, nutrition, and preventive health care. While AARP does not provide medical care or determine health coverage, it offers educational information that members can use alongside their own medical providers.

Financial information is another significant benefit area. AARP provides resources about Social Security, Medicare, retirement planning, and managing money in later life. Members can read detailed guides about how Social Security works, when to claim benefits, and how Medicare coverage differs from private insurance. The organization also offers financial planning calculators and worksheets that members can use for their own planning purposes.

Travel discounts represent a popular membership benefit. AARP has partnerships with hotels, airlines, rental car companies, and cruise lines to offer reduced rates to members. A member who holds an AARP card can often receive a percentage discount on hotel rooms or car rentals just by showing their membership card at check-in. These discounts vary by company and may change seasonally.

Technology assistance is increasingly important. AARP offers resources to help members learn about smartphones, computers, cybersecurity, and digital safety. Given that many older adults are newer to technology or want to improve their tech skills, these resources cover topics like setting up email, using social media safely, and avoiding online scams.

Additional benefits include discounts on insurance products (such as auto and homeowners insurance through partner companies), pharmacy discounts, entertainment discounts, and access to AARP's community volunteer programs. Members can also attend local AARP events and workshops in their communities.

Practical Takeaway: AARP membership provides discounts on travel and shopping, access to health and financial information, technology learning resources, and community events.

Information Resources Available to AARP Members

AARP maintains an extensive library of educational materials available to members at no additional cost beyond membership dues. The monthly AARP Magazine, delivered to members' homes, contains articles about health topics, financial planning, travel ideas, and lifestyle subjects relevant to people 50 and older. The magazine has a circulation in the millions and includes both feature articles and regular columns from various contributors.

The AARP website serves as a comprehensive resource hub with thousands of articles organized by topic. Members can search for information about specific health conditions, find step-by-step guides for Medicare enrollment, read about Social Security timing decisions, or explore caregiving resources. The website includes video content, interactive tools, and downloadable worksheets.

Medicare is a major focus area for AARP resources. The organization publishes detailed guides about Medicare Part A (hospital insurance), Part B (medical insurance), Part D (prescription drug coverage), and supplemental Medigap policies. These resources explain how Medicare works, when enrollment periods occur, and how to compare different coverage options. A member reviewing these materials can better understand their options when making Medicare decisions.

Social Security information is another substantial resource category. AARP provides guides about how Social Security benefits are calculated, how claiming age affects monthly benefit amounts, spousal and survivor benefits, and taxes on Social Security income. Many members use these resources to understand their options before deciding when to claim benefits.
