Learn About AARP Membership Options and Setup

What AARP Membership Includes

AARP membership offers a variety of benefits and services designed for people age 50 and older. The organization provides access to discounts, publications, and resources related to health, financial planning, and lifestyle topics. Understanding what comes with membership helps individuals determine whether joining aligns with their interests and needs.

Members receive AARP Magazine, a publication sent six times per year that covers health, retirement planning, travel, and other topics relevant to older adults. The organization also provides access to their website, which contains articles, videos, and interactive tools about Medicare, Social Security, caregiving, and other subjects. Members can use these resources to learn about topics at their own pace without pressure to make immediate decisions.

Discounts represent another major component of membership. AARP negotiates reduced rates with retailers, hotels, rental car companies, and restaurants. For example, some hotel chains offer 10 percent discounts to AARP members, while certain pharmacies provide price reductions on prescription medications. Grocery stores, movie theaters, and entertainment venues also participate in discount programs. The actual savings vary by location and business, so members should ask about AARP rates when making purchases.

The organization offers access to member-only financial tools and calculators. These include retirement planning calculators, Social Security benefit estimators, and Medicare cost comparison tools. While these tools provide general information only, they can help individuals understand potential scenarios and questions to discuss with financial advisors or government agencies. Members can also access information about insurance products, though AARP does not provide insurance directly; instead, partner companies offer policies that members may purchase.

Practical takeaway: Before joining, review the specific discounts available in your area by visiting AARP's website or calling their customer service line. Make a list of businesses where you regularly shop or travel to see if the potential savings justify membership costs.

Types of AARP Membership Available

AARP offers different membership tiers, each with varying levels of benefits and different annual costs. Standard membership includes the core offerings mentioned above. Premium membership, sometimes called AARP Gold, includes everything in standard membership plus additional benefits such as more detailed access to certain online tools, exclusive member events, and enhanced customer support. The premium option costs more annually but appeals to individuals who want expanded access to AARP resources.

Digital-only membership represents another option for people who prefer online access without receiving printed magazines or materials. This tier typically costs less than standard membership because it eliminates printing and mailing expenses. Digital members receive access to the website, online publications, and digital versions of AARP Magazine. They can use the same discount programs and access the same online tools as standard members. This option works well for people who read primarily online and want to reduce paper waste.

AARP also offers trial or introductory membership periods. Some promotional offers allow individuals to join at a reduced rate for the first year. These introductory rates give new members a chance to explore the organization's offerings before committing to full-price membership. After the introductory period ends, membership renews at standard rates unless the person cancels.

Household or couples' memberships are available in some cases, allowing two people living in the same home to join under one membership. This option may cost slightly more than a single membership but typically provides better value when two household members want access to AARP resources and discounts. Both household members receive their own magazine and can use the member benefits independently.

Practical takeaway: Determine your primary interest in AARP membership—whether it's discounts, magazines, online tools, or community involvement. This will help you decide which membership tier offers the best match for your preferences and budget.

How to Join AARP and Set Up Your Account

Joining AARP requires completing a membership form with basic personal information. The process can be started online at AARP.org, over the phone by calling 1-888-OUR-AARP (1-888-687-2277), or by mail using a form sent by the organization. Online enrollment typically takes 10 to 15 minutes and requires a valid email address and mailing address. Phone-based enrollment takes slightly longer due to the time needed to verify information verbally.

When enrolling, individuals must provide their name, date of birth, and address. The organization uses date of birth to verify that the person meets the age requirement of 50 years or older. Additional information such as phone number and email helps AARP maintain contact information for renewal notices and communications. People joining by mail must complete a paper form and send it with payment to the address provided.

Payment options include credit card, debit card, or bank account transfer for online enrollments. Phone enrollments accept the same payment methods plus check payment by mail. Membership fees are typically paid annually, though some enrollment methods offer monthly payment plans that divide the annual cost into smaller amounts. The current annual cost for standard membership is approximately $16 per year, though prices may vary by region and membership type.

After enrollment is processed, new members receive a confirmation email if they joined online. The confirmation includes a temporary membership number that can be used immediately for discounts at participating businesses. A permanent membership card arrives by mail within 7 to 10 business days. The membership card contains a unique member number needed to access certain discounts and to log into the online member portal.

Setting up an online account allows members to access AARP's website features, manage their membership, and update personal information. New members receive login credentials during enrollment that can be used to create an account on AARP.org. The online account provides access to the member resource library, discount locator tool, email newsletters, and tools for updating address, payment method, and membership preferences.

Practical takeaway: Have your date of birth, current address, and a valid payment method ready before starting the enrollment process. Choose the enrollment method that fits your comfort level—online is fastest, while phone or mail options provide more direct contact with AARP representatives.

Understanding AARP Membership Costs and Renewal

AARP membership costs vary depending on the type of membership chosen. Standard membership typically costs around $16 annually, while digital-only membership may cost $12 per year. Premium or Gold membership runs approximately $28 per year. These prices reflect national rates but may differ slightly by state. Some states or regions occasionally run promotional offers with reduced first-year rates for new members, sometimes as low as $8 for the first year.

When comparing the cost to potential benefits, many members calculate their return on investment based on discounts they expect to use. For example, a single hotel stay with an AARP discount could save $20 to $30, which partially offsets the annual membership cost. A person who travels regularly or shops at discount-participating retailers may recover the membership cost through just a few transactions. Those who primarily join for magazine and online resource access should consider whether these features alone justify the annual fee.

Membership renews automatically each year unless canceled before the renewal date. AARP typically sends renewal notices by mail 60 to 90 days before the membership expiration date. The notice includes the renewal cost and payment instructions. Members can renew online, by phone, or by mail using the renewal notice. Automatic renewal through a saved payment method is also available for members who set this up during enrollment or through their online account.

If a member wishes to cancel their membership, they can do so by contacting AARP before the renewal date. Cancellation can typically be completed online, by phone, or by mail. AARP's customer service representatives can process cancellations and answer questions about membership or refunds. Some members choose to take advantage of introductory rate offers, cancel after the first year, and rejoin later when promotional rates are again available, though this approach requires managing renewal dates carefully.

Practical takeaway: Track your membership renewal date and review the benefits you've used during the year. If you haven't used enough discounts or resources to justify the cost, consider canceling before renewal. If the membership has provided value, plan for the renewal payment in your annual budget.

Accessing Discounts and Member Benefits After Joining

Once membership is activated, individuals can start using AARP discounts immediately. The fastest way to access discounts is to ask about AARP member rates when making purchases or reservations. When shopping at grocery stores, visiting restaurants, or booking hotel rooms, mentioning AARP membership and providing the membership card often triggers available discounts. Not all stores prominently advertise AARP discounts, so asking is important for maximizing savings.
