Learn About AARP Car Rental Discount Options

Understanding AARP Car Rental Discounts

AARP, formally known as the American Association of Retired Persons, negotiates special rates with car rental companies on behalf of its members. These discounts represent agreements between AARP and major rental agencies where members receive reduced pricing compared to standard rates. The discount structure varies by rental company, location, and time of year, but generally members can expect savings ranging from 5% to 25% off base rental rates. It's important to understand that these are negotiated rates, not promotional codes that expire or carry time limits—they're part of AARP's ongoing membership benefits.

The way AARP car rental discounts work involves using a specific discount code or rate code when booking. These codes are unique identifiers that rental companies use to apply member pricing to your reservation. AARP members typically receive these codes through their membership materials, the official AARP website, and member communications. When you provide your discount code during the booking process, the rental company's system recognizes your membership status and applies the negotiated rate instead of the standard daily rental cost.

AARP has established discount partnerships with several major car rental companies including Hertz, Budget, and Avis. Each company structures their member discount differently, so the actual savings you receive may vary depending on which rental agency you choose. Some companies offer percentage discounts off the total rental cost, while others provide flat daily rate reductions. Seasonal factors also play a role—peak travel seasons may have different discount structures than off-season periods. Understanding these variations helps you make informed choices about which rental company and booking approach works best for your specific travel plans.

Practical takeaway: Before booking, gather your AARP discount code from your membership materials or the AARP member portal. Having this information ready allows you to enter it correctly during the online booking process or provide it to an agent if you book by phone.

Major Rental Companies Offering AARP Discounts

Hertz has maintained one of the longest-standing discount relationships with AARP. Members can receive discounts on vehicle rentals at Hertz locations throughout North America. The company typically allows AARP members to book through the main Hertz website using their specific member rate code. Hertz offers various vehicle classes from economy cars to premium options, and the discount generally applies across these categories. Hertz also participates in the Gold Plus Rewards program, which means members can accumulate points on their rentals that can be redeemed for future bookings or upgrades. This layering of benefits—combining AARP discounts with loyalty program rewards—can result in additional value for frequent renters.

Budget provides AARP member discounts at most of its U.S. rental locations. Budget's discount structure has historically offered solid percentage reductions on base rates, though actual savings depend on factors like the specific location, type of vehicle, and rental dates. Budget also offers its own rewards program called Budget Rewards, which operates independently from AARP discounts. Members can sometimes use both benefits on the same rental, though it's important to review the terms of each program to understand how they interact. Budget often advertises special weekend rates and promotional periods that may or may not stack with AARP member pricing.

Avis rounds out the major partners offering AARP discounts to members. Avis provides member rates at many of its U.S. locations and has also extended discounts to some international rental locations. Avis Preferred members can combine their loyalty status with AARP membership discounts. The Avis website has a specific section for AARP member bookings, making it relatively straightforward to access discounted rates. Avis sometimes runs special promotions that may or may not provide better value than standard AARP discounts, so comparing options before booking is worthwhile.

Additional regional and specialty rental companies may also honor AARP discounts, though the availability and discount levels may differ from major chains. Some local or regional rental agencies offer AARP member rates as a way to compete with national chains. When planning a rental in a specific area, it's worth investigating whether smaller local companies provide AARP discounts that might compete favorably with national chain pricing.

Practical takeaway: Contact your preferred rental company or visit their website to confirm current AARP discount offerings before booking. Discount structures change periodically, and knowing the specific terms for your chosen company ensures you receive the best available rate for your rental dates and vehicle type.

How to Access and Use AARP Discount Codes

AARP members receive discount codes through several channels. The primary source is the official AARP website, which maintains a dedicated section for member discounts and benefits. Members can log into their account on aarp.org and navigate to the travel or car rental benefits section to find active discount codes for major rental companies. Current members also receive information about rental discounts through AARP magazine, direct mail, and email communications sent to the address associated with their membership account. When you first join AARP, your welcome materials typically include a guide to available member benefits with relevant discount codes and instructions for using them.

To use an AARP discount code when booking online, you'll typically enter it in a designated field on the rental company's website. The booking process generally includes a section labeled "rate code," "member code," "promotion code," or "discount code." You enter your AARP discount code in this field, and the system applies the member rate to your quoted price. The exact process varies slightly between rental companies—some may ask for your AARP membership number in addition to or instead of a separate rate code. Before you begin booking, have your membership number and discount code available to ensure smooth entry of information.

If you prefer to book by phone rather than online, you can provide your AARP discount code to a rental agent directly. When you call a rental company's reservation line, inform the agent that you're an AARP member and provide the relevant discount code. The agent can then quote you rates based on your member status and proceed with booking. Some AARP members find phone booking helpful when they have questions about which vehicle type offers the best value or when they want to discuss specific rental needs with a person rather than navigating an online system.

It's important to verify that your discount was actually applied to your reservation. After booking online, check your confirmation email to see whether the member rate is listed. The confirmation should show a reduced daily rate compared to standard pricing. If you don't see a discount reflected, you can contact the rental company to clarify whether the code was properly entered. Some systems apply discounts only when specific rate categories are available, so it's possible to enter a correct code but still receive a standard rate if member rates aren't available for your specific rental dates and location combination.

Practical takeaway: Save your AARP discount codes in an easily accessible location—such as a note in your phone or email—before you travel. Having codes ready when you book, whether online or by phone, reduces the chance of missing discounts and makes the booking process quicker.

Understanding Discount Amounts and Rate Variations

AARP car rental discounts typically range from 5% to 25% off standard rates, though the actual discount you receive depends on multiple factors. The base rate offered by rental companies fluctuates constantly based on demand, time of year, and booking timing. AARP member rates are negotiated as percentage reductions or fixed rate schedules applied to these base rates. This means that the dollar amount you save varies significantly. A 15% discount during a busy travel weekend when rates are elevated could result in greater savings than a 15% discount during a slow travel period when rates are already low.

Seasonal variations significantly impact both base rates and the value of AARP discounts. During peak travel seasons—summer months, holiday periods, and spring break—rental rates across the industry increase substantially. When AARP member discounts are applied to these elevated base rates, the absolute dollar savings can be substantial. For example, during a summer weekend when a standard mid-size sedan might rent for $75 per day, a 15% AARP discount saves you $11.25 per day. However, during an off-season period when the same car might rent for $35 per day, the same percentage discount saves you only $5.25 per day. Understanding this relationship helps you set realistic expectations about savings.

Vehicle type also affects discount outcomes. Most AARP discounts apply to all vehicle categories—from economy cars to premium vehicles—but the base rates for different vehicle types vary widely. A luxury SUV might have a standard rate of $120 per day, meaning a 15% AARP discount saves $18 per day. An economy car at $40 per day would yield only $
