Install Jupyter Notebook on Mac Step by Step

Understanding Jupyter Notebook and Its Purpose on Mac

Jupyter Notebook is a web-based application that allows you to create and share documents containing live code, equations, visualizations, and narrative text. The name "Jupyter" comes from combining three programming languages it originally supported: Julia, Python, and R. Today, it primarily works with Python but can support over 40 programming languages through different kernels.

On macOS, Jupyter Notebook runs locally on your computer, creating an interactive environment where you can write Python code one section at a time, see results immediately, and combine your code with explanatory text and charts. This makes it particularly useful for data analysis, scientific computing, learning programming, and documenting your work in one place. According to a 2023 survey of data scientists and developers, approximately 72% of Python users work with Jupyter Notebook at some point in their career, making it an industry standard tool.

The application opens in your web browser (usually automatically), but it runs on your local computer, not on a remote server. This means your data stays on your machine, and you can work offline. Each project is saved as a file with a .ipynb extension, which contains all your code, outputs, and text together in one document.

Jupyter Notebook differs from traditional Python scripts (.py files) because it lets you run code in smaller chunks called "cells" rather than executing an entire file at once. This interactive approach makes it valuable for exploration, testing ideas, and showing your work step-by-step. Many educational institutions, research organizations, and tech companies use Jupyter Notebook as part of their standard toolkit.

Practical takeaway: Before installing Jupyter Notebook, understand that you're setting up a Python-based tool for interactive coding and data work. Jupyter Notebook runs through your browser on your local Mac computer, and it's particularly useful if you plan to work with data analysis, scientific computing, or learning Python programming.

Checking Your Current Python Installation and Version

Before installing Jupyter Notebook, you need to confirm whether Python is already installed on your Mac and which version you have. Jupyter Notebook requires Python 3.6 or newer to function properly, though Python 3.9 or later is recommended for the best compatibility with current packages and tools. macOS systems may come with Python 2.7 pre-installed, which is outdated and cannot run Jupyter Notebook.

To check your Python installation, open the Terminal application on your Mac (found in Applications > Utilities or by using Spotlight search). Type the following command and press Enter:

python3 --version

This command will display your Python version if it's installed. If you see a version number like "Python 3.11.5" or similar, you have Python 3 installed and can proceed with Jupyter Notebook installation. If Terminal responds with "command not found" or shows Python 2.7, you'll need to install or upgrade Python first.

You can also check which Python executable your system will use by typing:

which python3

This command shows the location of your Python installation, typically something like "/usr/local/bin/python3" or "/opt/homebrew/bin/python3" depending on how Python was installed. If you have multiple Python installations, this helps identify which one your system uses by default.

For Mac users, there are several ways Python may already be installed: through Xcode Command Line Tools, through Homebrew (a package manager for Mac), through Anaconda (a Python distribution), or through downloading directly from python.org. Each installation method places Python in different locations, which is why checking the version and location matters.

Practical takeaway: Open Terminal and run python3 --version to verify you have Python 3.6 or newer. Write down which version you have and its location. If Python isn't installed or you have an older version, you'll need to install Python before proceeding to Jupyter Notebook installation.

Installing or Updating Python Using Homebrew

Homebrew is a popular package manager for macOS that simplifies the installation and management of software. If you don't already have Python installed or need to update to a newer version, installing Python through Homebrew is straightforward and gives you a clean, manageable installation. Homebrew automatically handles dependencies and makes it easy to maintain your Python installation over time.

First, check whether Homebrew is already installed on your Mac by typing this in Terminal:

brew --version

If Homebrew is installed, you'll see a version number. If it's not installed, Terminal will say "command not found." To install Homebrew, visit brew.sh and follow their instructions, or run the installation command they provide in Terminal (this involves copying and pasting a single line). The installation takes several minutes and may ask for your Mac password.

Once Homebrew is installed, updating or installing Python takes just one command:

brew install python3

If Python 3 is already installed through Homebrew, this command will update it to the latest version. Homebrew's default installation provides one of the most recent stable Python versions, typically within one minor version of the latest release. As of 2024, Homebrew usually installs Python 3.12 or 3.13.

After the installation completes, verify the installation worked by running:

python3 --version

You should see a version number 3.6 or newer. Homebrew also installs pip (Python's package manager) automatically, which you'll use to install Jupyter Notebook. Verify pip is installed by typing:

pip3 --version

This should display a version number like "pip 23.2.1 from /usr/local/lib/python3.11/site-packages/python3.11" or similar. Pip is the tool you'll use in the next steps to get Jupyter Notebook on your system.

Practical takeaway: If you don't have Python installed, use Homebrew to get it by typing brew install python3 in Terminal. Verify both Python and pip installed correctly by checking their versions. Having Python installed through Homebrew makes future updates straightforward and keeps your system organized.

Installing Jupyter Notebook Using Pip

Once you have Python 3.6 or newer installed with pip, installing Jupyter Notebook is relatively quick. Pip is Python's package manager, and it retrieves Jupyter Notebook from the Python Package Index (PyPI), a central repository containing thousands of Python tools and libraries. The installation command is simple and only requires one line in Terminal.

In Terminal, type the following command and press Enter:

pip3 install jupyter

Pip will connect to PyPI, determine which version of Jupyter Notebook is compatible with your Python version, and then retrieve and install it along with all necessary supporting packages. This process typically takes 2-5 minutes depending on your internet connection and computer speed. During installation, you'll see Terminal output showing the progress, including lines like "Collecting jupyter," "Collecting jupyter-core," and similar messages as it retrieves required components.

The Jupyter Notebook package includes several important components: the Jupyter core (the application engine), the Jupyter Lab interface, and the IPython kernel (which runs Python code). When you install "jupyter," you're actually getting a collection of tools that work together.

Once installation completes, Terminal will show a message indicating successful installation, typically ending with something like "Successfully installed jupyter-X.X.X" along with a list of all the packages that were installed as dependencies. Some common packages installed alongside Jupyter include notebook, ipython, ipykernel, traitlets, tornado, and many others—each serving a specific function in making Jupyter work.

If you want to verify the installation worked, type:

jupyter --version

This will display the version of Jupyter installed on your system. You can also run a quick test to confirm all components are working by typing:

python3 -m
