How to Uninstall Apps From Windows PC

Understanding App Uninstallation on Windows

Uninstalling applications from your Windows PC is a straightforward process that helps you manage storage space, improve system performance, and remove software you no longer use. According to Microsoft's usage data, the average Windows user has between 30 to 50 applications installed on their computer, though many remain unused. Removing unnecessary programs can free up gigabytes of storage space and reduce the number of background processes running on your system.

When you uninstall an app, Windows removes the program files from your computer's hard drive and eliminates associated shortcuts from your Start menu and desktop. However, the uninstallation process varies depending on how the application was originally installed. Some programs install through the Microsoft Store, others through traditional installers, and some come pre-installed with Windows itself. Understanding these different methods helps you successfully remove any application from your system.

Before uninstalling any program, consider whether you might need it in the future. Some applications require reinstallation if you delete them, and you may need to re-enter license keys or reconfigure settings. It's also worth noting that certain programs, particularly antivirus software or system utilities, work together with other applications, so removing one might affect another's functionality.

Practical takeaway: Make a list of programs you haven't used in the past three months. These are good candidates for uninstallation and can help reclaim storage space on your computer.

Using Settings to Uninstall Applications

The Settings menu in Windows 10 and Windows 11 provides the most straightforward method for uninstalling most applications. This approach is cleaner than older methods and typically removes associated files more thoroughly. To access this feature, click the Start button (the Windows logo in the lower-left corner), then type "Settings" and open the Settings application. Alternatively, you can press the Windows key and the letter "I" together to open Settings directly.

Once in Settings, navigate to "Apps" in the left sidebar, then select "Apps and features." This displays a complete list of installed programs on your computer, organized alphabetically. You can scroll through this list or use the search box at the top to find specific applications. The list shows each program's name, version number, and the amount of storage space it uses. For users with large numbers of installed programs, the search function saves significant time.

When you find the application you want to remove, click on it to reveal an "Uninstall" button. Clicking this button starts the uninstallation process. Some programs launch their own uninstaller window with additional options, while others simply remove files without prompting. If an uninstaller appears, follow any on-screen instructions. Most uninstallers ask whether you want to keep or remove settings and configuration files associated with the program.

The Settings method works particularly well for Microsoft Store apps and modern desktop applications. According to Windows usage statistics, approximately 60% of users' installed applications can be uninstalled through this method without any complications. The remaining applications may require alternative uninstallation approaches.

Practical takeaway: Open Settings right now and review your Apps and features list. You'll likely find programs you forgot you installed that are taking up valuable storage space.

Uninstalling Programs Using Control Panel

The Control Panel remains a reliable tool for uninstalling traditional desktop applications, particularly older software that may not appear properly in the modern Settings menu. While Windows has been gradually transitioning to the Settings app, Control Panel continues to function and often provides more detailed uninstallation options. To open Control Panel, click the Start button and type "Control Panel," then select it from the results.

Once Control Panel opens, look for "Programs" or "Programs and Features." In Windows 11, you may need to click "View by" and select "Large icons" or "Small icons" to see this option clearly. The Programs and Features window displays your installed applications in a more traditional list format than the Settings app. This view often shows the installation date, publisher information, and the version number for each program.

To uninstall a program through Control Panel, click on the application name to highlight it, then click the "Uninstall" button that appears at the top of the list. Some programs, particularly larger software suites, may provide "Change" or "Repair" options alongside the uninstall button. These options let you modify the installation, add or remove components, or fix corrupted files without completely removing the program.

Control Panel's uninstallation method often works better than Settings for legacy applications, professional software, and programs installed before Windows 10. Many IT professionals continue using Control Panel for this reason. The uninstallation process through Control Panel may take several minutes, especially for large applications like photo editing software or office suites.

Practical takeaway: If a program won't uninstall through Settings, try Control Panel instead. Legacy applications sometimes require the older uninstallation interface to work properly.

Removing Microsoft Store Apps

Microsoft Store applications, sometimes called "modern apps" or "UWP apps," follow a simpler uninstallation process than traditional desktop programs. These applications, which include many games, productivity tools, and system utilities available through the Microsoft Store, typically integrate more cleanly with Windows. Examples include Spotify, Discord, and various Microsoft Office applications installed from the Store.

To uninstall a Microsoft Store app, open the Settings application and navigate to Apps, then Apps and features. Locate the Store app you want to remove from the list. When you click on it, an "Uninstall" button appears below the program name. Click this button, and a confirmation window asks whether you want to remove the application. Confirming this selection removes the app and all its associated files within seconds.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Store apps directly from the Microsoft Store application itself. Open the Microsoft Store (search for it in your Start menu), click on your account icon in the upper-right corner, and select "My library." This displays all apps you've installed from the Store. For each app, click the three dots menu button and select "Uninstall."

A notable advantage of Microsoft Store apps is that they occupy significantly less storage space than traditional programs and integrate better with Windows' built-in security features. Because Store apps run in a sandboxed environment with restricted system access, they generally don't leave behind scattered files across your computer. Studies show that Microsoft Store apps use 40-60% less storage space on average compared to equivalent traditional desktop applications.

Practical takeaway: If you use multiple Microsoft Store apps, you can manage them all from one location in the Microsoft Store's library, making batch uninstallations easier than managing traditional programs.

Dealing with Stubborn Programs and System Apps

Some applications resist uninstallation through normal methods, either because their uninstaller is damaged, they're deeply integrated into Windows, or they were installed in unusual ways. Windows includes built-in tools to handle these situations. If an application won't uninstall through Settings or Control Panel, try right-clicking the program's shortcut or executable file and selecting "Run as administrator," then attempt uninstallation again. Running as administrator gives the uninstaller additional permissions that may be necessary.

For system applications that come built into Windows—such as Maps, Weather, or Xbox—the uninstallation process differs slightly. While you can't remove these through the traditional methods (as Windows needs them to function), you can "uninstall" them from your user account in Settings. Navigate to Apps and features, find the system app, and click "Uninstall." These apps can be reinstalled from the Microsoft Store if you change your mind. This approach essentially hides the apps rather than permanently removing them from Windows.

For particularly stubborn programs, Windows includes a troubleshooter tool specifically designed to address uninstallation problems. Open Settings, go to System, then troubleshoot, and look for "Programs and Features" in the list of available troubleshooters. Running this tool attempts to identify and fix issues preventing proper uninstallation.

In rare cases where software is corrupted or its uninstaller is missing, you may need to manually delete program files from your hard drive. However, this approach should only be used as a last resort, as it may leave behind registry entries and configuration files. The typical storage location for programs is C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86), but manually deleting from these folders requires administrator access and carries a small risk of system instability if done incorrectly.

Practical takeaway: Before resorting to manual deletion,
