How to Turn Your Touchpad Back On Guide

Understanding Your Touchpad and Why It Might Be Disabled

A touchpad is the flat, rectangular surface on your laptop or keyboard that lets you control your cursor and interact with your computer without using a mouse. It's built into most laptops and some external keyboards. When your touchpad stops working, it's often because it has been turned off rather than broken. This can happen accidentally through a keyboard shortcut, a settings change, or a driver issue.

There are several reasons why your touchpad might be disabled. Some people turn it off intentionally because they prefer using a mouse or external input device. Others disable it to avoid accidental touches while typing. Many modern laptops have keyboard shortcuts that toggle the touchpad on and off. Sometimes, a recent update to your operating system or device drivers can cause the touchpad to stop responding. Hardware problems are less common but possible if the touchpad has physical damage.

Understanding which situation applies to you is the first step in turning your touchpad back on. If you accidentally turned it off through a keyboard shortcut, you can likely enable it again in seconds. If a software update caused the issue, you may need to update or reinstall your touchpad drivers. Recognizing the cause helps you know which solution to try first.

Most touchpad problems are software-related and can be resolved without technical expertise. The solutions range from simple keyboard combinations to adjusting settings in your computer's control panel or system preferences. Even if you're not comfortable with technology, the steps outlined in this guide use straightforward language and common menu locations.

Takeaway: Your touchpad being off is usually a software issue, not hardware failure. This means you have several straightforward options to turn it back on, starting with simple keyboard shortcuts and progressing to settings changes if needed.

Quick Fix: Using Keyboard Shortcuts to Reactivate Your Touchpad

Many laptops have a dedicated keyboard shortcut to turn the touchpad on and off. These shortcuts vary by manufacturer and model, but they typically involve holding the Function key (Fn) and pressing another key with a touchpad icon. Learning your specific laptop's shortcut is often the fastest way to restore touchpad function.

Common keyboard combinations include Fn + F6, Fn + F7, Fn + F9, or Fn + F10, depending on your laptop brand. Some Dell laptops use Fn + F3. Lenovo laptops often use Fn + F8. HP laptops frequently use Fn + F5 or Fn + F10. ASUS devices might respond to Fn + F9. MacBooks typically don't have a single keyboard shortcut for the trackpad, as disabling it is less common on Apple devices.

To try a keyboard shortcut, look at the function keys at the top of your keyboard. You're looking for a key with an icon that resembles a small rectangle or touchpad. Once you identify which key might have the touchpad icon, press and hold the Fn key (usually in the bottom left corner of your keyboard) and press that key at the same time. Hold both keys for a second or two, then release them. Your touchpad should light up or start responding.

If the first shortcut doesn't work, try the other common combinations listed above for your laptop brand. You can find your specific laptop model by checking the manufacturer's name on the bottom or lid of your computer. Many manufacturer websites have quick reference guides showing which key combination works for each model. Some laptops also display a notification on your screen when you successfully toggle the touchpad.

Not all keyboard shortcuts work if certain settings have been changed in your operating system. If this method doesn't restore your touchpad, move on to checking your computer's settings and device drivers. But try this approach first, as it resolves the problem immediately for many users.

Takeaway: Look for a touchpad icon on your function keys, then hold Fn while pressing that key to toggle your touchpad back on. This single action solves the problem for most people.

Windows: Enabling Your Touchpad Through Settings

If the keyboard shortcut doesn't work, your Windows computer has built-in settings where you can turn the touchpad on. The exact location of these settings depends on your Windows version, but the process is similar across Windows 10 and Windows 11. You can reach touchpad settings through your system settings menu without needing any special programs.

For Windows 11, click the Start button (Windows logo) in the bottom left corner of your screen. Type "touchpad" into the search box that appears. Click "Touchpad settings" when it shows up in the search results. This opens a window showing various touchpad options. Look for a toggle switch at the top that says something like "Touchpad" with an on/off switch next to it. If this toggle is currently off (grayed out or pointing left), click it to turn the touchpad back on. You should see the toggle switch move and typically change color, indicating the touchpad is now enabled.

For Windows 10, the process is similar but the exact wording may differ. Click the Start button, type "touchpad settings," and look for an option that says "Touchpad" or "Mouse and touchpad settings." Once you open this menu, look for a toggle or checkbox next to "Touchpad" and make sure it's turned on. Some Windows 10 computers organize this under "Devices" rather than as a standalone search result.

In some cases, your touchpad settings might show as unavailable or grayed out, which usually means the device drivers need to be updated. See the section below about updating drivers for information on how to fix this situation. If your touchpad settings show the device is on but your touchpad still isn't working, you may also want to check if it's listed under "Devices and Printers" with an error indicator.

While you're in the touchpad settings menu, you might notice other options like sensitivity, tap recognition, and palm rejection. These settings control how your touchpad behaves but won't affect whether it's on or off. For now, focus only on turning it on; you can adjust these other settings later if you want to customize how your touchpad works.

Takeaway: Open Windows Settings, search for "touchpad," and toggle the touchpad switch to the on position. If the toggle is grayed out, your drivers likely need updating.

Mac: Reactivating Your Trackpad (Apple Touchpad)

Mac computers call their touchpads "trackpads," and they very rarely become disabled compared to Windows laptops. However, if your Mac trackpad isn't responding, the solution is different from Windows devices. Mac trackpads are almost never turned off through settings like Windows touchpads, so the issue usually involves a hardware detection problem or a need to reset certain settings.

First, restart your Mac computer completely. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner, select "Restart," and wait for your computer to shut down and start again. This simple step fixes many trackpad issues on Mac computers because it resets the hardware detection. If your trackpad works after restarting, you're finished. Many Mac trackpad problems resolve with just this step.

If restarting doesn't work, go to System Preferences or System Settings (depending on your macOS version). Click the Apple menu, then select "System Preferences" (on older Macs) or "System Settings" (on newer Macs). Look for an option called "Trackpad" and click it. A window will open showing trackpad settings. Make sure you see options for trackpad sensitivity and tracking. If this window is empty or shows no options, your trackpad driver may need attention.

On Mac computers, you can also reset your trackpad by going into System Preferences, clicking Trackpad, and then clicking the "Reset" button if one appears. Some Mac models don't have a reset button, but the option may be available under "Point & Click" settings. After clicking reset, your trackpad should start responding normally.

If your Mac trackpad still isn't working after restarting and checking settings, you may need to reset your Mac's System Management Controller (SMC). This is a more advanced step that resets some of your Mac's hardware settings. The process varies depending on whether you have an Apple Silicon Mac (newer models) or an Intel Mac (older models). For Intel Macs, shut down the computer, press and hold Shift + Control + Option (all on the left side of the keyboard) plus the Power button for 10 seconds, then release all keys and restart. For
