How to Turn Off Text Messages on Your Phone

Understanding Text Message Settings on Your Phone

Text messages, also called SMS (Short Message Service) or MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service), are a common way people communicate. Every smartphone has built-in settings that let you control how you receive and manage these messages. Before you turn off text messages, it helps to understand what will happen when you do. If you turn off all text messaging, you won't receive any SMS or MMS messages from anyone—friends, family, businesses, or services you use. This guide explores the different ways to manage your text message settings depending on your phone type and what you want to accomplish.

Most people don't want to turn off all text messages completely. Instead, they might want to block specific senders, silence notifications, or organize their messages better. Your phone offers many options between receiving everything and receiving nothing. For example, you could silence notifications from a particular contact while still receiving their messages. You could also block spam texts from businesses you don't recognize. Understanding these options helps you make informed choices about your communication preferences.

The steps to manage text messages differ depending on whether you have an iPhone or Android phone, and even which version of the operating system you're running. This guide covers the most common approaches. Keep in mind that if you turn off text messaging entirely, services that send you important information via text—like two-factor verification codes for banking, appointment reminders, or delivery notifications—won't reach you. This could affect your ability to access certain accounts or services.

• Text messages are sent through your mobile carrier's network, not through internet data
• SMS and MMS are different: SMS is text-only, while MMS can include photos, videos, or audio
• Turning off texts affects all incoming messages unless you use selective blocking
• Some critical services rely on text message delivery

Practical Takeaway: Before making changes to your text settings, think about what messages you actually need to receive. Write down which contacts or services regularly send you important texts, so you don't accidentally miss something necessary.

How to Turn Off Texts on an iPhone

iPhones running iOS offer several methods to control text messaging. The most direct approach is to turn off the Messages app in your notification settings, which stops alert sounds and visual notifications from appearing, though messages may still be stored in the app. To do this, open Settings, select Notifications, scroll down to find Messages, and tap it. From there, you can turn off "Allow Notifications." This prevents your phone from alerting you about new texts, but the messages still arrive in your phone's memory.

If you want to prevent the Messages app from working at all, you can restrict it using Screen Time. Go to Settings, tap Screen Time, select App Limits, and add the Messages app to create restrictions. However, this method still doesn't completely disable text messaging at the carrier level. Another option is to use "Do Not Disturb" mode, which you can schedule to run during specific times. This silences all notifications, including texts, but they'll still arrive and you can read them when you check your phone.

For more complete control, you might consider disabling iMessage (Apple's internet-based messaging service) separately from SMS. Open Settings, go to Messages, and toggle off "iMessage." This stops you from sending and receiving messages through Apple's servers, but SMS texts may still arrive. To block specific contacts from texting you, open the Messages app, find the conversation with that person, swipe left on their name, and tap "Block this Caller."

If you want to explore whether your carrier offers options to disable text messaging through their network, you may need to contact them directly. AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and other carriers have different procedures for managing this at the account level. Some carriers allow you to modify these settings through their website or customer service line, though completely disabling SMS at the carrier level is less common than managing notifications on the phone itself.

• Turning off notifications doesn't prevent texts from arriving—they just won't alert you
• Do Not Disturb mode can run automatically on a schedule you set
• Blocking individual contacts stops texts from specific people
• iMessage and SMS are handled through different systems on your iPhone
• Screen Time restrictions require you to set up a Screen Time passcode

Practical Takeaway: If you want to stop being notified about texts without losing them completely, turn off notifications in Settings > Notifications > Messages. This is usually what people actually need rather than stopping texts entirely.

How to Turn Off Texts on an Android Phone

Android phones give you several options for controlling text messages, though the exact steps vary depending on your phone's manufacturer and Android version. The most common approach is to manage notifications through your phone's settings. Open Settings, find Apps or Application Manager (the name varies by phone), locate your default messaging app—commonly Google Messages, Samsung Messages, or another app—and tap it. Select Notifications, then toggle off "Show Notifications." This stops alert sounds and visual alerts from appearing when texts arrive, though the messages still come through to your phone.

If you want to completely remove the messaging app's ability to receive texts, you can disable it in settings, though this approach depends on your phone model. Go to Settings > Apps, find your messaging app, and look for a "Disable" button. Some phones use "Uninstall Updates" or "Clear Data" options instead. However, many Android phones won't let you fully disable system apps that came with the phone. In those cases, blocking notifications is usually the most practical solution.

To block specific people from texting you on Android, open your messaging app, find the conversation from that person, press and hold their name, and select "Block" or "Block Number." The exact wording depends on your messaging app and phone type. Google Messages shows different blocking options than Samsung Messages, for example. After blocking someone, their texts won't reach your phone at all, and they typically won't receive delivery confirmation that their messages arrived.

Android users can also explore carrier-level controls. Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and other carriers offer their own apps and online accounts where you might be able to manage text messaging settings. Some carriers have apps like Verizon Message+ or AT&T Messages that let you control certain aspects of your messaging. Like iPhone users, you may need to contact your specific carrier to learn about completely disabling SMS at the account level, as this option is uncommon.

• Android notification settings are typically found in Settings > Apps > [Your Messaging App] > Notifications
• Different Android phones use different default messaging apps, so steps may vary
• Blocking a contact works across most Android messaging apps
• Disabling system apps is limited on many Android phones
• Clearing an app's data will delete all stored messages permanently

Practical Takeaway: On Android, turning off notifications for your messaging app is usually the simplest approach. If you need to stop texts from reaching you at all, blocking specific contacts is more practical than trying to disable the entire messaging system.

Managing Spam and Unwanted Text Messages

Most people who want to turn off text messages are actually trying to stop spam or unwanted messages rather than blocking all communication. According to data from the CTIA (a wireless industry group), Americans received over 2 trillion spam texts in 2022, with an average person receiving roughly 10-15 spam texts per month. Learning to block spam specifically is often more useful than turning off all texts.

Both iPhone and Android phones have built-in spam filtering tools. On iPhone, open Settings > Messages and turn on "Filter Unknown Senders." This moves texts from numbers not in your contacts into a separate tab, so they don't clutter your main conversation list. Some iPhone models also offer "Block Unknown Callers" in Settings > Phone, which applies to both calls and texts. On Android, most phones have similar features. Open your messaging app's settings (this varies by app) and look for "Advanced" or "Spam Protection" options. Google Messages, which comes on many Android phones, automatically filters suspected spam into a separate folder.

Your mobile carrier offers spam-blocking services as well. Verizon offers Call Filter and Message Filter, AT&T offers Call Protect, and T-Mobile offers Scam Shield. These
