How to Turn Off Galaxy AI on Samsung

Understanding Galaxy AI and Why You Might Want to Turn It Off

Galaxy AI refers to a collection of artificial intelligence features that Samsung integrated into its Galaxy devices, particularly newer models like the Galaxy S24 series. These features use machine learning to enhance various functions across your phone, from photography to text input to voice commands. When Samsung introduced Galaxy AI, it became enabled by default on compatible devices, meaning these features automatically activate when you use your phone.

Galaxy AI encompasses several distinct tools. One major component is AI-powered photo editing, which lets you remove unwanted objects from images, generate backgrounds, or enhance colors automatically. Another feature is Circle to Search, which allows you to draw circles, boxes, or scribbles on your screen to search for information about that content. Additionally, Galaxy AI includes writing assistance tools that suggest grammar corrections, tone adjustments, and writing style improvements across messaging apps and email. Voice commands also benefit from AI processing, making Bixby and other voice features more responsive to natural speech patterns.

You might want to turn off Galaxy AI for several reasons. Some users prefer not to use cloud-based AI features due to privacy considerations, as some Galaxy AI functions send data to Samsung's servers for processing. Others find that AI suggestions interfere with their normal workflow or prefer manual control over their content without algorithmic interference. Battery life concerns motivate some users to disable background AI processing. Additionally, some features may simply not be useful for your particular needs, and turning them off can reduce screen clutter and notification frequency.

Practical takeaway: Before disabling Galaxy AI entirely, consider which specific features bother you most. You may not need to turn everything off—Samsung allows granular control over individual AI tools so you can keep the ones you find valuable.

How to Disable Galaxy AI Settings in Your Phone's Main Settings App

The primary method to manage Galaxy AI involves accessing your phone's Settings application. This approach gives you the most straightforward path to controlling which AI features run on your device. Start by opening the Settings app from your home screen or app drawer. Look for the Settings icon, which typically appears as a gear symbol. Once Settings opens, scroll down through the menu options until you find "Galaxy AI" or "Generative AI" as a standalone section. On some Samsung devices, this option may be nested under "Advanced features" instead of appearing as its own category.

When you locate the Galaxy AI settings section, you'll see a toggle switch at the top of the page that controls the overall Galaxy AI feature. Tapping this toggle will turn off the entire Galaxy AI system. However, Samsung designed this feature to offer more granular control. Below the master toggle, you'll find individual switches for specific AI tools. These typically include "Generative Edit" (the photo editing features), "Circle to Search," "Interpreter Mode," and "Samsung Keyboard suggestions."

Each individual tool has its own toggle switch. You can turn off specific features while leaving others active. For example, you might disable photo editing features while keeping Circle to Search enabled. This selective approach means you don't have to sacrifice all AI functionality if you only want to remove one particular feature from your device.

After toggling off your desired features, the changes take effect immediately. You don't need to restart your phone. However, any AI features you previously used may no longer appear in their normal locations. For instance, if you disable Generative Edit, the AI editing tools won't show up in your photo gallery's edit menu anymore. This immediate change helps you confirm that the right features have been disabled.

Practical takeaway: Spend a few minutes reviewing each individual Galaxy AI feature before turning them all off. You might discover that some tools are actually useful, and selective disabling gives you better control than a complete shutdown.

Turning Off Circle to Search and Related Visual Search Features

Circle to Search represents one of the most visible Galaxy AI features on Samsung devices. This tool allows you to draw shapes on your screen with your finger or stylus to search for objects, text, or information about what you circled. The feature integrates with Google Lens technology and displays search results directly on your screen. Many users find this feature convenient, while others view it as an unnecessary tool that clutters their interface.

To disable Circle to Search specifically, open Settings and navigate to the Galaxy AI section. Find the "Circle to Search" toggle and switch it off. This action removes the Circle to Search feature from your device's quick access options and disables the functionality across your apps. Once disabled, you won't see any prompts or options to use Circle to Search, and drawing gestures on your screen won't trigger the search function.

It's worth noting that Circle to Search sometimes appears as a suggestion on your lock screen or home screen. If you disable the feature but still see related prompts or buttons, you may need to check your Google app settings separately, as some Circle to Search functionality ties into Google services rather than purely Samsung systems. Open the Google app, tap your profile icon, select "Settings," then "Google Assistant," and look for visual search options there.

Some users disable Circle to Search because they accidentally trigger it while using other gestures on their screen. Others find that the feature drains battery life due to continuous visual processing. Privacy-conscious users may disable it because the feature sends image data to Google's servers for analysis. The choice to disable this feature doesn't affect other Samsung functions, and you can re-enable it anytime through the same settings menu if you change your mind.

Practical takeaway: Test Circle to Search for a few days before disabling it permanently. Many users initially overlook this feature but discover its usefulness once they understand its capabilities, particularly for researching objects, plants, or locations you encounter.

Managing Generative Edit and AI Photo Enhancement Tools

Generative Edit encompasses several AI-powered photo editing capabilities that Samsung integrated into the Gallery app. These tools include Object Eraser (which removes unwanted items from photos), Generative Fill (which creates new content to fill areas where you removed objects), Sketch to Image (which converts your hand-drawn sketches into realistic photos), and Portrait Studio (which applies different artistic styles to portrait photos). These features operate through Samsung's cloud-based AI processing, meaning your photos get sent to Samsung's servers for analysis and editing.

To disable these photo editing features, open Settings and navigate to Galaxy AI settings. Look for "Generative Edit" or "Photo editing suggestions" and toggle it off. Once disabled, these AI tools disappear from your Gallery app's editing menu. When you open a photo and select edit, the AI-powered options will no longer appear, though traditional editing tools like crop, brightness, and color adjustment remain available.

Some users find that disabling Generative Edit improves their photo workflow because they prefer manual editing control or use third-party editing applications like Adobe Lightroom or Snapseed. Others disable the feature specifically because they don't want their photos sent to Samsung's servers, even temporarily. Samsung states that these photos are processed and then deleted, but privacy-conscious users may still prefer to keep all editing local to their device.

If you disable Generative Edit but later want to use it again, the process is reversible. Simply return to the same settings and toggle the feature back on. This flexibility means you can test life without these tools and decide whether they actually enhance your photography experience. Many users discover that they rarely used these features and don't miss them after disabling them.

Portrait Studio, another component of the Generative Edit suite, uses AI to apply different artistic filters and styles to portrait photos. If portrait editing is something you use frequently, you might want to leave this feature enabled while disabling the other generative tools. The granular controls in Samsung's settings allow exactly this kind of selective management.

Practical takeaway: Before disabling all photo editing features, examine your photo library. If most of your photos are landscapes or candids rather than portraits, and you rarely perform extensive edits, these AI tools likely won't be missed.

Disabling AI Writing Assistance and Keyboard Suggestions

Samsung's Galaxy AI includes writing assistance features that function across messaging apps, email, and note-taking applications. These tools offer real-time suggestions for grammar corrections, tone adjustments (such as making text more formal or casual), and spelling fixes. The Samsung Keyboard also integrates AI-powered word prediction and completion suggestions. Some users find these features helpful for catching errors before sending messages, while others find constant suggestions distracting or intrusive.
