How to Turn Off Autofill in Chrome

Understanding Chrome Autofill and Why You Might Want to Disable It

Google Chrome's autofill feature is a tool built into the browser that automatically fills in forms with information you've previously entered. This includes addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, payment card details, and passwords. When you start typing in a form field, Chrome remembers what you've typed before and suggests it to you again in the future. While this feature can save time for some users, many people prefer to turn it off for privacy, security, or personal preference reasons.

The autofill feature works by storing data locally on your device and, if you're signed into a Google account, syncing that information across your devices. According to Chrome's documentation, autofill data is encrypted when synced across devices. However, some users are uncomfortable with Chrome storing this information at all, regardless of encryption. Others may share a computer with family members or colleagues and don't want their personal information automatically suggested when others use the browser.

There are different types of autofill in Chrome: address and payment information autofill, password autofill, and autofill for usernames and passwords. You can turn off all of these features or just specific ones depending on your needs. For example, you might want to keep password autofill turned on for security purposes while disabling address autofill to prevent others from seeing your personal information.

Understanding how autofill works is the first step toward managing your privacy settings in Chrome. The process of turning it off is straightforward and can be completed in just a few minutes. Once you disable autofill, Chrome will stop suggesting previously entered information in form fields, though it will still store the data unless you delete it. You can always turn autofill back on later if you change your mind.

Practical Takeaway: Before disabling autofill, think about which types of information you want Chrome to stop suggesting. You don't have to turn off all autofill features—you can customize which types are enabled based on your comfort level.

How to Turn Off Autofill for Addresses and Payment Information

The most common reason people disable autofill is to prevent Chrome from suggesting addresses and payment card information. This process involves accessing Chrome's settings menu and toggling off the autofill feature. Here's how to do it on a computer using Windows, Mac, or Linux.

First, open Google Chrome and look at the top right corner of your screen. You'll see three vertical dots (often called the "menu" or "hamburger" icon). Click on these dots to open Chrome's main menu. From the dropdown menu, select "Settings." This will open a new tab showing Chrome's settings page.

Once you're in Settings, look at the left sidebar. You'll see several categories including "You and Google," "Autofill and passwords," "Privacy and security," and others. Click on "Autofill and passwords" to expand this section. You'll now see options for "Autofill," "Passwords," and "Payment methods."

To turn off autofill for addresses and payment information, look for the "Autofill" option and click on it. This will show you a toggle switch labeled "Autofill." If the toggle is blue and switched to the right, autofill is currently enabled. Click the toggle to switch it to gray and turn it off. This simple action disables Chrome's ability to suggest addresses and payment information in form fields.

If you want to be more selective, you can also manage this by clicking directly on "Addresses" or "Payment methods" within the "Autofill and passwords" section. This allows you to view all saved addresses and payment cards, and you can delete specific entries rather than turning off the entire autofill feature. Some users prefer this approach if they want to keep autofill on for some information but remove other saved details.

Practical Takeaway: Turning off address and payment autofill takes less than one minute and provides immediate privacy benefits. If you decide you only want to remove certain saved addresses or cards rather than disabling the feature entirely, you can delete individual entries from these settings.

Disabling Password Autofill in Chrome

Password autofill is a separate feature from address and payment autofill. When you save passwords in Chrome, the browser remembers them and automatically fills in login credentials when you return to websites. Many users want to turn this off, especially on shared computers or for security reasons. However, turning off password autofill is different from turning off address autofill because password management involves additional considerations.

To disable password autofill, follow the same initial steps: click the three dots menu, select Settings, and then click on "Autofill and passwords" in the left sidebar. This time, instead of clicking "Autofill," look for "Passwords" within the "Autofill and passwords" section. You'll see a toggle switch labeled "Offer to save passwords." If this toggle is blue, Chrome is currently offering to save your passwords when you log into websites. Click the toggle to turn it gray and disable this feature.

Turning off password autofill means Chrome will no longer prompt you to save passwords when you log in, and it won't automatically fill in password fields in the future. However, your previously saved passwords will still be stored in Chrome unless you delete them. If you want to remove passwords you've already saved, you can stay in the Passwords section and look for a "Manage passwords" option. This shows all saved passwords (with names hidden for security), and you can delete individual passwords by clicking the trash icon next to each entry.

There's also a related setting called "Auto sign-in" which automatically signs you into websites using saved credentials. If you turn off password autofill but this setting remains on, Chrome might still automatically log you into websites without you taking any action. To disable auto sign-in, look for this option in the same "Passwords" section and toggle it off. This gives you more control over when Chrome accesses your saved passwords.

Practical Takeaway: Disabling password autofill is particularly important on shared computers. Turn off both "Offer to save passwords" and "Auto sign-in" if you want complete control over when your login information is used.

Turning Off Autofill on Mobile Devices

If you use Google Chrome on a smartphone or tablet, the process of disabling autofill is slightly different from a computer but equally straightforward. Chrome works on both Android phones and iPhones, and the autofill settings are similar across both platforms, though the exact steps vary slightly due to different operating systems.

On an Android device, open Chrome and tap the three dots menu in the bottom right corner of the screen (on some devices, this may appear in the top right). Scroll down and tap "Settings." Then tap "Autofill and passwords." You'll see the same options available as on a computer: "Autofill," "Addresses," "Payment methods," and "Passwords." Tap on "Autofill" and toggle it off, or manage individual password and payment settings as needed.

On an iPhone or iPad, open Chrome and tap the three dots menu in the bottom right corner. Select "Settings" and then "Autofill." Here you'll see options to turn off autofill for addresses and payment methods. For passwords on iOS devices, tap "Passwords" in the Settings menu to manage those separately. The functionality is the same as on Android, just with slightly different navigation due to Apple's interface requirements.

One important difference between mobile and desktop Chrome is that mobile devices often have their own autofill systems built into the operating system. For example, iPhones have iCloud Keychain, and many Android devices have Google's password manager. Even if you turn off Chrome's autofill on mobile, your phone's system-level autofill may still work. If you want to disable autofill completely on a mobile device, you may need to check both Chrome's settings and your phone's settings. On iPhones, this would be Settings > Passwords > Autofill; on Android, it would be Settings > Google > Manage your Google Account > Security > Password Manager.

Practical Takeaway: Mobile autofill settings work the same way as desktop settings, but remember that your phone's operating system may have its own autofill system separate from Chrome. You may need to adjust settings in both places for complete control.
