How to Turn Off Autocorrect on Devices

Understanding Autocorrect and Why You Might Want to Turn It Off

Autocorrect is a feature built into most modern devices that automatically changes words as you type them. When your device detects what it thinks is a spelling mistake, it replaces the word with what it believes is the correct version. This happens in real-time while you're texting, emailing, or using messaging apps. For example, if you type "teh," autocorrect typically changes it to "the" without asking permission.

The technology behind autocorrect uses algorithms and dictionaries stored on your device. These dictionaries contain hundreds of thousands of words and common misspellings paired with their corrections. When you type, the system compares your input against this database. If it finds a close match, it makes the substitution. The system also learns from patterns—if you frequently type certain words or phrases, autocorrect begins to recognize them as intentional rather than mistakes.

People choose to turn off autocorrect for several practical reasons. Some users type in multiple languages and find autocorrect constantly changing words that are correct in other languages. Creative writers, programmers, and people who use specialized terminology often disable autocorrect because the feature frequently changes intentional words into common dictionary terms. Others find that autocorrect changes introduce embarrassing errors into professional messages or personal communications.

Additionally, autocorrect can slow down typing for some users because they must pause to verify that the changes made are actually what they intended. Users who text in shorthand, use slang, or communicate with unique dialects may experience constant corrections that feel intrusive. Understanding these reasons helps you decide whether turning off autocorrect matches your communication style and needs.

Practical Takeaway: Before disabling autocorrect entirely, consider whether you might benefit from turning it off only for specific apps or languages while keeping it enabled elsewhere on your device.

How to Turn Off Autocorrect on iPhones and iPads

Apple devices running iOS and iPadOS include autocorrect as part of their keyboard settings. The process for disabling it is consistent across iPhones and iPads, though the exact location of settings may vary slightly depending on your device model and operating system version. The most straightforward method involves accessing your device's Settings app, which appears on your home screen as a gray gear icon.

To begin, open the Settings app and scroll down until you locate "General." Tap on General, then look for an option labeled "Keyboard." This section contains all the typing-related settings for your device. Within the Keyboard settings, you will see several toggle switches for different typing features. One of these toggles controls "Auto-Correction." This toggle appears as a switch that you can turn on or off by tapping it.

When the Auto-Correction toggle is enabled, it appears in a green or blue color (depending on your iOS version) and shows that the feature is active. To turn off autocorrect, simply tap this toggle once. The switch will change color to gray, indicating that autocorrect is now disabled on your device. This change takes effect immediately—you do not need to restart your phone or confirm the change in any other way.

If you want more granular control, Apple also offers related settings nearby. The "Predictive" toggle enables word suggestions that appear above your keyboard as you type—you can disable this separately if you prefer. Another option called "Check Spelling" marks misspelled words with a red underline but doesn't automatically correct them. Some users prefer this middle-ground approach, which provides feedback without forced corrections.

Important to note: Disabling autocorrect on your iPhone or iPad affects typing across your entire device unless you create exceptions. Certain apps may have their own spelling correction settings that operate independently of the system-wide autocorrect setting. For example, some email clients or note-taking applications include built-in correction features that function separately from iOS autocorrect.

Practical Takeaway: If you turn off autocorrect and later decide you want it back, return to Settings > General > Keyboard and toggle Auto-Correction back on—your previous typing habits and learned words remain stored on your device.

Disabling Autocorrect on Android Devices

Android devices offer autocorrect through their keyboard apps, with the most common being Google Keyboard (Gboard) and Samsung Keyboard on Samsung devices. Unlike iPhones where autocorrect is a system-wide setting, Android typically allows you to manage autocorrect through your keyboard app settings. The exact steps depend on which keyboard you use, but the general process is similar across most versions.

For users with Google Keyboard (Gboard), start by opening any app where you can type, such as Messages, Gmail, or Notes. Tap in a text field to bring up your keyboard. On the keyboard, locate the settings icon—this typically appears as a gear symbol and is usually found in the upper left or upper right corner of the keyboard interface. Tapping this icon opens your keyboard's settings menu. Look for an option labeled "Text correction" or "Correction" depending on your Gboard version. Within this section, you will find a toggle for "Auto-correction." Tap this toggle to turn it off.

Samsung device users should follow a similar approach but with slightly different menu names. Open your keyboard by tapping in any text field, then locate the settings icon (usually a gear). Tap it and navigate to "Smart typing" or "Text and input." From there, find "Correction" or "Auto-correction" and disable this option. The process takes only a few taps and changes apply across all your typing on that device.

Some Android users have multiple keyboard apps installed. You can set a default keyboard in your device settings, which determines which keyboard appears when you type. If you have multiple keyboards, you may need to disable autocorrect on each one individually if you want to ensure it's off everywhere. To check or change your default keyboard, go to Settings, search for "Default keyboard" or "Input method," and select your preferred option.

One advantage of Android is that many users can choose between different keyboard apps entirely. If you find that one keyboard's autocorrect settings don't work the way you prefer, you can download alternative keyboards from the Google Play Store. Some third-party keyboards offer more customization options for autocorrect behavior, allowing you to set different levels of correction rather than simply turning it completely on or off.

Practical Takeaway: If you primarily use one app for typing (such as WhatsApp or a specific email client), some of these apps have their own autocorrect settings separate from your keyboard app—check the app's settings as well when troubleshooting correction issues.

Managing Autocorrect on Windows and Mac Computers

Computer-based autocorrect works differently than on mobile devices, though the underlying purpose remains the same. Windows and Mac computers include autocorrect features primarily in their word processing and email applications rather than as a system-wide setting. Microsoft Word, Apple Mail, and many other productivity apps have built-in autocorrect that functions similarly to what you experience on phones.

On Windows computers using Microsoft Office products, you can access autocorrect settings through the application menu. Open Word, Excel, or Outlook, then click on "File" in the top left corner. Select "Options" from the menu that appears. In the Options window, click on "Proofing" in the left sidebar, then click the "AutoCorrect Options" button. This opens a dialog box with multiple tabs including "AutoCorrect," "AutoFormat As You Type," and "Actions." In the AutoCorrect tab, you will see checkboxes for various correction behaviors. Unchecking the box next to "Replace text as you type" disables the primary autocorrect function. You can also selectively disable other features like "Correct accidental use of cAPS LOCK" or "Correct TWo CApitals at start of word."

Mac users working in Microsoft Office can find these settings by clicking "Word" (or the relevant application name) in the top menu bar, then selecting "Preferences." Look for "Autocorrect" in the preferences window. Mac's native applications like Mail and Notes often have autocorrect settings within each app's preferences, accessible through the application menu at the top of the screen.

Google Docs, which many people use for online writing and collaboration, includes autocorrect that can be managed through the "Tools" menu. Click Tools, then "Preferences," and you will find a checkbox for "Use spelling suggestions." Unchecking this disables autocorrect in that document
