How to Turn Off Apps on Your Phone and Computer

Understanding App Management Across Your Devices

Apps run on phones, tablets, and computers to perform specific tasks. Managing which apps stay active and which ones turn off is a fundamental skill for device maintenance. When you turn off an app, you stop it from running in the background and consuming your device's resources. This differs from uninstalling an app entirely—turning off an app means you can turn it back on later without reinstalling it.

Every operating system handles app management differently. iPhones use iOS, Android phones use Google's Android operating system, and computers run Windows, macOS, or Linux. Each system has its own methods for stopping apps. Understanding your specific device type helps you manage apps more effectively. On average, smartphone users have between 60 and 90 apps installed, though most people use only about 10 percent of them regularly. Many of these unused apps continue running background processes that drain battery life and use data.

Background activity refers to what apps do when you're not actively using them. An email app might check for new messages every few minutes. A weather app might update forecasts hourly. A social media app might refresh your feed continuously. While some background activity is useful, too much can slow down your device and waste battery power. Learning to control which apps run in the background gives you better control over your device's performance.

Turning off apps serves multiple purposes. Battery life improves when fewer apps consume power. Your internet connection runs faster when apps aren't constantly uploading or downloading data. Your device's processing speed increases when the processor isn't juggling multiple running apps. Privacy also improves when you stop apps from collecting location data or accessing your contacts and photos when you're not using them.

Practical takeaway: Before managing your apps, identify which ones you actually use regularly. Most people benefit from turning off apps they haven't opened in weeks or months.

How to Turn Off Apps on Android Phones

Android phones, made by Samsung, Google, LG, and other manufacturers, offer several ways to stop apps. The most straightforward method involves using the Settings menu. Open Settings on your Android phone, then find the Apps or Applications section. This section lists all installed apps on your device. Tap any app name to see options including Force Stop. Pressing Force Stop immediately closes that app and stops all its background processes.

Force Stop differs from just closing an app. When you exit an app by pressing the back button or home button, the app may continue running in the background. Force Stop completely terminates the app. However, some system apps cannot be force stopped—Android prevents this to maintain device stability. If you see that Force Stop is grayed out, the app is a system app that needs to run constantly.

Another method involves using your phone's Recent Apps or Running Apps feature. Swipe up from the bottom of most Android phones to see recently used apps, or access this through your app drawer. Long-press on an app and select Remove or Close. This removes the app from the recently used list and stops it from running. Some Android phones show a Running Apps section in Settings where you can see which apps are currently active and stop them individually.

Battery Saver or Battery Optimization features on Android phones can automatically stop apps from running in the background. Access this through Settings, then Battery or Device Care, then Battery. Look for Battery Saver or a similar option. When you enable this feature, your phone restricts background activity for all apps except those on your allowed list. This dramatically extends battery life on most Android phones. You can typically add specific apps to an exceptions list so they continue running in the background.

Disabling notifications from specific apps reduces interruptions even if the app continues running. Go to Settings, then Apps, then select an app. Find Notifications and toggle it off. This stops the app from sending you alerts while potentially keeping some background processes active. This approach works well for apps you want to keep installed but don't need constant notifications from.

Practical takeaway: Use Force Stop for apps you want to completely close right now, and use Battery Saver for ongoing background control of multiple apps simultaneously.

How to Turn Off Apps on iPhones

iPhones handle app management somewhat differently than Android phones. Apple's iOS operating system automatically closes apps when you're not using them, so complete app termination is rarely necessary. However, you can still stop apps from running in the background using Background App Refresh settings. Open Settings, then scroll to find the app you want to manage. Inside that app's settings, look for Background App Refresh and toggle it off. This prevents the app from updating or running processes when you're not actively using it.

To manually close an app on newer iPhones without a home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen. This shows your recently used apps. Swipe up on any app card to close it. On older iPhones with a home button, double-press the home button to see running apps, then swipe up on the app you want to close. This forces the app to quit. However, this is usually temporary—when you open the app again, iOS will relaunch it normally.

Location Services settings control whether apps can access your GPS location in the background. This is important for privacy and battery life. Open Settings, then Privacy, then Location Services. Toggle Location Services off entirely if you don't need location data, or scroll through individual apps and set each one to "While Using" instead of "Always." The "While Using" setting means the app only accesses your location when you have it open.

Notification settings on iPhones let you disable specific app alerts without stopping the app from running. Go to Settings, then Notifications, then select an app. Toggle off Allow Notifications to stop receiving alerts from that app. You can also set notifications to appear only in Notification Center rather than with sounds and banners, giving you more control over interruptions.

Cellular Data usage can be restricted for specific apps. Open Settings, then Cellular, then scroll through apps and toggle off Cellular Data for any app you don't want using your mobile internet. This doesn't stop the app from running but prevents it from consuming your cellular data plan when you're not on WiFi. This proves particularly useful for social media and video streaming apps.

Practical takeaway: On iPhones, focus on Background App Refresh settings and Location Services rather than force-closing apps, since iOS automatically manages closed apps efficiently.

How to Turn Off Apps on Windows Computers

Windows computers have numerous apps and processes running at startup and in the background. You can manage these through the Settings app and Task Manager. Open Settings, go to Apps, then Startup. This shows which apps launch automatically when Windows starts. Toggle off any apps you don't need running at startup. Removing unnecessary apps from startup dramatically improves boot times and overall system performance.

Task Manager shows all currently running programs on your Windows computer. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager directly, or press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and select Task Manager. The Processes tab shows what's currently running, organized by apps, background processes, and system processes. Click on any app or process and select End Task to close it immediately. Be careful not to close system processes you don't recognize—closing important Windows processes can cause instability.

Background apps settings in Windows 10 and 11 let you control which apps can run in the background. Open Settings, go to Privacy & security, then Background apps. Toggle off apps you don't want running constantly. Many apps default to having background permission enabled, so reviewing this list can reveal apps you forgot about that are silently consuming resources. This is separate from startup apps—background apps are those already allowed to run even after you close them.

Services in Windows are background processes that support various system functions and installed software. Some services you don't need can be disabled to improve performance. Press Windows+R, type services.msc, and press Enter to open the Services window. However, disabling services requires caution—only disable services you're certain about. Microsoft provides documentation on what each service does. Generally, only advanced users should modify services.

Antivirus and security software often run background scans and monitoring. Many Windows users don't realize how much system resources security software consumes. If your computer feels slow, check your antivirus settings for scheduled scans. You can reschedule scans to run during times you're not using your computer, or reduce the scan frequency if your device rarely connects to external networks.

Practical takeaway: Start by removing unnecessary apps from Windows startup, as this has the biggest impact on boot times and overall performance.
