How to Turn Off a VPN on Android

Understanding VPNs on Android Devices

A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, is software that encrypts your internet connection and routes your data through servers in different locations. When you use a VPN on your Android phone or tablet, websites cannot see your actual location or IP address. Instead, they see the location of the VPN server you're connected to. This technology became increasingly common starting in the mid-2010s, with VPN usage growing significantly as people sought more privacy while browsing.

Android devices running version 4.0 and later include built-in VPN functionality. This means your phone or tablet has the capability to use VPNs without needing special hardware or technical modifications. Many people use VPNs when connecting to public WiFi networks at coffee shops, airports, or libraries. Others use them to access content restricted in their region or to maintain privacy from their internet service provider.

VPNs work by creating an encrypted tunnel between your device and the VPN server. Any data passing through this tunnel becomes unreadable to outsiders, including your WiFi provider or network administrator. However, it's important to understand that the VPN provider itself can see your traffic, so choosing a reputable VPN service matters if privacy is your concern.

Your Android device may have a VPN running in the background for various reasons. Some organizations require employees to use VPNs when accessing work resources remotely. Other people keep VPNs running continuously for privacy protection. Whatever the reason, knowing how to turn off a VPN gives you control over your device's network behavior and can help troubleshoot connectivity problems.

Practical Takeaway: Before turning off your VPN, identify why it was activated. Check whether your employer, school, or organization requires the VPN for accessing specific resources or if you personally enabled it for privacy purposes.

Locating Your VPN Settings in Android

The location of VPN settings varies slightly depending on your Android version and device manufacturer. However, the general path remains consistent across most devices. Start by opening your device's Settings application, which typically appears as a gear icon on your home screen or in your app drawer. Once Settings opens, look for a section labeled "Network & Internet" or simply "Networks." Some devices from manufacturers like Samsung or OnePlus may label this section differently, such as "Connections."

Within the Networks or Connections section, you should find a subsection specifically for VPN. This might be listed as "VPN," "More," or "Advanced." If you don't see VPN immediately visible, look for expandable menus or options that say "More options" or "Advanced settings." On some devices, you may need to scroll down within the Network & Internet section to find the VPN option.

If your device uses Android 12 or later, Google consolidated VPN settings more prominently. Navigate to Settings, then select "Network & Internet," and you should see "VPN" as a direct option. Tap it to view all configured VPNs on your device. For devices running Android 10 or 11, the path remains similar, though the exact menu structure may differ slightly.

Once you locate the VPN section, you'll see a list of VPNs that have been configured on your device. Each configured VPN appears with its name and status. A connected VPN typically shows as "Connected" next to its name, and you may see a small VPN icon in your device's status bar at the top of the screen. This icon—usually a key or shield symbol—indicates that a VPN connection is currently active.

Practical Takeaway: Take screenshots of your VPN settings before making changes. This helps you remember where you found them and what VPNs were configured, which proves useful if you need to reconnect later.

Disconnecting an Active VPN Connection

The simplest way to turn off a VPN is to disconnect it from the active VPN screen. Navigate to your VPN settings using the path described above, and look at the currently connected VPN. Next to its name, you should see a toggle switch or button labeled "Disconnect," "Disable," or simply an active/inactive indicator. Tap this switch to disconnect the VPN immediately. Within seconds, your device will stop routing traffic through the VPN server and return to using your regular internet connection.

Some Android versions display a "Disconnect" button directly on the VPN entry. If you see this, simply tap it once. The button will change appearance, indicating the VPN is no longer active. Your status bar icon will also disappear, confirming the disconnection. This method works for any VPN type, whether it's a commercial VPN service, a work VPN configured by your employer, or a personal VPN you set up yourself.

If you're using a VPN app rather than the built-in Android VPN settings, the disconnection process differs slightly. Open the VPN app itself and look for a "Connect/Disconnect" button on the main screen. Tap the button labeled "Disconnect," "Stop," or showing a connected status. Most VPN apps display a large button on their main screen for this purpose. Once tapped, the app will close the VPN connection, and you'll return to your standard internet connection.

After disconnecting, verify the connection has actually been stopped. Check your status bar for the VPN icon—if it's gone, the VPN is off. You can also test your connection by opening a web browser and visiting an IP-checking website like whatismyipaddress.com. Your displayed IP address should change from the VPN server's address to your actual internet provider's address once disconnected.

Practical Takeaway: Test your internet connection after disconnecting the VPN to confirm the disconnection worked and that your regular internet is functioning properly.

Removing or Uninstalling VPN Profiles

If you want to completely remove a VPN from your device rather than just disconnect it, you can delete its profile. This differs from disconnecting—disconnecting stops the VPN temporarily, while removing its profile deletes its configuration entirely. To remove a VPN profile, navigate to your VPN settings and locate the VPN you wish to remove. Long-press or right-click on the VPN name. A context menu should appear with options including "Delete," "Remove," or "Uninstall."

Tap the delete or remove option. Your device may ask you to confirm this action, warning that the VPN profile will be permanently deleted. This is a safety measure to prevent accidental deletion. Confirm by tapping "Delete," "Remove," or "OK" depending on your device's wording. The VPN profile will disappear from your VPN list immediately. If you later need this VPN again, you'll have to reconfigure it from scratch.

For VPN apps installed from Google Play Store, removing the profile through Settings differs from uninstalling the app. If you want to completely remove the app, navigate to Settings, then Apps or Application Manager. Find the VPN app in the list, tap it, and select "Uninstall." This removes the app entirely from your device, which also removes any profiles it created.

Some work-related or managed VPNs may have restricted removal permissions. If you see a message saying you cannot delete the VPN because it's managed by your organization or device administrator, you'll need to contact your IT department or administrator. They can remotely remove the VPN configuration or change your device's restrictions. Personal VPNs you configured yourself should always be removable without special permissions.

Practical Takeaway: Before permanently deleting a VPN profile, note down its settings or take a screenshot in case you need to reconfigure it later. Work VPNs especially should not be deleted without confirming with your IT support team first.

Troubleshooting VPN Disconnection Issues

Sometimes a VPN doesn't disconnect when you expect it to. If you've tried the standard disconnection methods but your device still shows the VPN icon in the status bar, several troubleshooting steps can help. First, force-close the VPN app. Navigate to Settings, then Apps or Application Manager, find the VPN app, tap it, and select "Force Stop." This terminates the app completely, which usually breaks the VPN connection. Wait a few seconds, then check your status bar—the VPN icon should be gone.
