How To Treat Swollen Glands at Home

Understanding Swollen Glands and When to Seek Medical Care

Swollen glands, medically called lymphadenopathy, occur when lymph nodes become enlarged. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures that filter fluid and help your immune system fight infections. You have hundreds of lymph nodes throughout your body, but the ones you can typically feel when swollen are in your neck, under your jaw, behind your ears, and in your armpits and groin.

When you develop an infection—whether from a virus, bacteria, or other source—your lymph nodes work harder to filter out harmful particles and produce infection-fighting cells. This increased activity causes them to swell, sometimes quite noticeably. Most cases of swollen glands are temporary and resolve on their own within one to two weeks as your body fights off the infection.

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, swollen glands occur in approximately 5 to 10 percent of the general population at any given time, with higher rates during cold and flu seasons. Children experience swollen glands more frequently than adults because their immune systems encounter new pathogens regularly.

However, certain situations require medical attention. Seek care from a healthcare provider if swollen glands persist longer than two weeks, if they are extremely tender and painful, if they feel hard or fixed in place rather than movable, if you have difficulty swallowing or breathing, if you have unexplained weight loss, or if you develop a high fever (over 103°F). Additionally, if swelling appears in only one area and doesn't resolve, or if you notice swollen glands without any obvious infection or illness, medical evaluation is appropriate.

Practical takeaway: Familiarize yourself with the location of major lymph node groups so you can monitor them during illness. Keep a simple record of when swelling started and any accompanying symptoms to share with your healthcare provider if needed.

Home Care Strategies for Comfort and Recovery

Most cases of swollen glands respond well to conservative home care measures focused on comfort and supporting your body's natural healing processes. These approaches work best when combined and maintained consistently throughout your illness.

Rest is fundamental to recovery. When your body fights an infection, it requires significant energy. Getting adequate sleep—typically seven to nine hours per night for adults, and more for children—allows your immune system to function optimally. During acute illness with swollen glands, don't hesitate to take extra rest days and reduce physical activity. Strenuous exercise can prolong illness and delay recovery, so ease back into activity gradually as symptoms improve.

Proper hydration supports lymph system function and helps your body flush out toxins. Drink water throughout the day, aiming for at least eight glasses daily, though individual needs vary. Warm beverages like herbal tea, warm water with lemon, and broths can be particularly soothing. Staying hydrated also helps loosen mucus if you have respiratory symptoms accompanying your swollen glands.

Nutrition matters significantly during recovery. Focus on whole foods rich in vitamins and minerals: fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits, berries, and bell peppers, supports immune function. Zinc, present in poultry, beef, and legumes, plays a role in immune response. Garlic and ginger have mild anti-inflammatory properties and have been used traditionally to support immune health.

Keep your environment comfortable and moist. Dry air can irritate throat tissue and worsen discomfort. Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air, or create steam by running hot water in a shower and breathing in the vapor. This is particularly helpful if you have accompanying sore throat symptoms.

Practical takeaway: Create a recovery toolkit: set a consistent bedtime one hour earlier than usual, keep a water bottle nearby at all times, prepare a simple meal plan with immune-supporting foods, and invest in or borrow a humidifier if you don't have one.

Temperature Management and Pain Relief

Fever often accompanies swollen glands as your body's natural defense mechanism against infection. While fevers are generally beneficial—they help your immune system function and inhibit some pathogens—managing fever-related discomfort improves your overall experience during illness.

For mild to moderate fevers (below 103°F in adults), many healthcare providers recommend allowing the fever to run its course without medication, as fighting the fever may actually prolong illness. However, you can manage discomfort through non-medication approaches. Dress lightly in breathable fabrics, use a single light blanket, and keep your room cool without being cold. Sponging your skin with lukewarm (not cold) water can provide comfort, though this is more often used for high fevers in children.

Over-the-counter pain relievers can address discomfort from swollen, tender glands. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) both reduce pain and fever. Ibuprofen has additional anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce swelling itself. Follow package directions carefully and never exceed recommended doses. If you have liver or kidney concerns, are taking other medications, or have a history of stomach issues, consult with a pharmacist before use.

Topical approaches also provide relief. Warm compresses applied to swollen glands for 15-20 minutes several times daily can ease tenderness and promote comfort. Some people find relief with heating pads set on low. Conversely, some individuals prefer cold compresses. Experiment to determine which brings you more comfort—both approaches are valid.

If you have swollen glands in your throat area causing difficulty swallowing, throat lozenges containing benzocaine provide temporary numbing relief. Gargling with warm salt water (half teaspoon salt in eight ounces warm water) several times daily also soothes throat irritation. Avoid very hot drinks and foods, which can irritate sensitive throat tissue further.

Practical takeaway: Keep both heat and cold options available—a microwaveable heating pad and a gel ice pack—and track which provides better relief for your specific discomfort, noting this for future reference.

Supporting Your Immune System Naturally

While your body's immune system handles most infections independently, certain practices may support optimal immune function during illness. These are complementary approaches meant to work alongside rest and basic care, not replace medical treatment.

Herbal remedies have traditional use in supporting immune health, though scientific evidence varies for different options. Elderberry has been studied for cold and flu support; some research suggests it may modestly reduce symptom duration. Echinacea, another traditionally used herb, shows mixed research results. Ginger provides anti-inflammatory benefits and may soothe throat irritation. Turmeric contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties. These herbs can be consumed as teas, added to foods, or taken as supplements, though you should verify with a healthcare provider that herbs don't interact with any medications you take.

Honey has demonstrated antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties in research. A spoonful of honey can soothe throat irritation and may help suppress coughs. (Note: honey should not be given to children under one year old.)

Vitamin and mineral supplementation may help if you have documented deficiencies, but research on supplementing healthy individuals with normal nutrient intake shows limited benefit in shortening illness duration. The exception is zinc lozenges started within 24 hours of symptom onset, which some studies suggest may modestly reduce cold duration by a day or so.

Probiotics support gut health and immune function. Consuming fermented foods like yogurt with live cultures, kefir, sauerkraut, or kimchi, or taking probiotic supplements, may support overall immune resilience, particularly with regular use over time rather than during acute illness.

Stress reduction supports immune function. During illness, practice gentle stress-relief activities: meditation, deep breathing exercises, listening to calming music, or gentle stretching. Chronic stress suppresses immune function, so maintaining these practices even when well can support long-term immune health.

Practical takeaway: Build a personal immune-support profile by identifying which supportive measures (herbal teas, specific foods, relaxation practices) actually make you feel better, and keep these items stocked for when illness strikes.
