How to Take Screenshots on Your iPhone

Understanding iPhone Screenshot Basics

Taking a screenshot on an iPhone captures whatever is currently displayed on your screen and saves it as an image file. This feature has been part of iPhones since the original model in 2007, and it remains one of the most commonly used tools on modern devices. A screenshot creates a still image that you can view later, share with others, or edit as needed.

The term "screenshot" refers to a digital photograph of your screen's contents. When you take a screenshot, your iPhone saves the image to your Photos app in the Screenshots album, making it easy to locate and manage. The image captures everything visible at that moment—text, images, videos that are paused, app interfaces, and more.

Screenshots are stored as standard image files (typically in HEIF or JPEG format, depending on your iPhone model and settings). Each screenshot includes metadata such as the date and time it was taken. Your iPhone stores screenshots in your device's storage, and they count toward your available storage space, similar to regular photos.

Different iPhone models have slightly different methods for taking screenshots, which we'll explore in detail. The basic concept remains the same across all models: a combination of button presses that triggers the capture function. Understanding how your specific iPhone model works will make the process second nature.

Practical Takeaway: Screenshots are simple image files stored in your Photos app. Before taking screenshots regularly, check your available storage space by going to Settings > General > iPhone Storage to ensure you have adequate room for these files.

Taking Screenshots on iPhone Models with Face ID

iPhones with Face ID—including iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and newer models—use a specific button combination for screenshots. These models don't have a home button, which changed how the screenshot function works compared to older iPhones.

To take a screenshot on a Face ID iPhone, simultaneously press the Volume Up button and the Side button (also called the power button). The Volume Up button is located on the left side of the device, while the Side button is on the right side. You need to press both buttons at exactly the same time for the screenshot to register. The action takes place instantly—there's no delay or waiting period.

Immediately after taking the screenshot, a thumbnail preview appears in the lower-left corner of your screen for a few seconds. This thumbnail shows you what was captured. You have several options at this moment: tap the thumbnail to open editing tools, swipe left on the thumbnail to dismiss it, or do nothing and let it disappear automatically after a few seconds.

If you tap the thumbnail, you enter the screenshot editor. Here you can crop the image, draw on it with different colors and styles, add text, magnify portions of the image, or sign it with your finger. These editing tools are built into the iOS system and don't require any additional apps. Once you finish editing, tap "Done" to save your changes or "Discard" if you change your mind.

One useful feature is the ability to save a screenshot to Files or markup it before saving. When you tap the thumbnail, you'll see options to draw on the screenshot using various markup tools. The screenshot is automatically saved to your Photos app in the Screenshots album, even if you don't edit it.

Practical Takeaway: Practice the Volume Up + Side button combination a few times to develop muscle memory. If your screenshot isn't working, ensure you're pressing both buttons simultaneously—pressing them separately or in sequence won't trigger the screenshot function.

Taking Screenshots on iPhone Models with Touch ID and Home Button

Older iPhone models—including iPhone 8, iPhone 7, iPhone 6s, and earlier—use a different method for screenshots because they have a physical home button. These models include the iPhone SE (1st and 2nd generation), which also uses the home button method despite being released more recently.

On these models, take a screenshot by pressing the Top (or Side) button and the Home button simultaneously. The Top button is located at the top or side of the device (depending on the model), and the Home button is the circular button at the bottom of the screen. Like with Face ID iPhones, you must press both buttons at the same time for the screenshot to work properly.

The screenshot process on these older models works similarly to newer iPhones in terms of what happens next. A thumbnail appears in the lower-left corner showing what was captured. You can tap this thumbnail to access markup and editing tools, or let it disappear on its own. The screenshot is saved automatically to your Photos app in the Screenshots album.

The markup tools available on these older models are identical to those on newer iPhones. You can draw, add text, adjust colors, magnify areas, or sign the screenshot before saving. The editing interface was introduced in iOS 10 and has remained largely consistent across iPhone generations.

One thing to note: if you're upgrading from an older iPhone to a newer Face ID model, the button combination will change. Many people find the transition straightforward since both methods use two buttons, though the specific buttons differ. Taking a few practice screenshots after upgrading helps you adjust to the new combination.

Practical Takeaway: If you own both older and newer iPhones, write down which button combination corresponds to each model. Keep a note in your phone's notes app or on a physical piece of paper if you switch between devices frequently.

Locating and Managing Your Screenshots

Every screenshot you take is automatically saved to your Photos app. To locate your screenshots, open the Photos app and look for the "Screenshots" album in your library. This album collects all screenshots in one organized location, separate from your regular photos. You can access this album by tapping "Albums" at the bottom of the Photos app, then scrolling down to find "Screenshots."

Screenshots appear in chronological order within the Screenshots album, with the most recent screenshot at the bottom. The date and time are displayed with each image, making it possible to find a specific screenshot by remembering approximately when you took it. You can also search for screenshots using the search function in the Photos app.

Managing screenshots involves several options. You can delete screenshots you no longer need by selecting them and tapping the trash icon. You can share screenshots via Messages, Mail, AirDrop, or other apps by tapping the share icon. You can also edit screenshots after saving them by opening them and tapping "Edit" to make adjustments without using the immediate markup tools.

If you want to keep screenshots organized by category or purpose, consider creating albums within your Photos app. For example, you might create albums for "Work Screenshots," "Travel Information," or "Reference Images." To create an album, go to the Albums tab, tap the plus icon, and follow the prompts to create and name a new album. You can then move screenshots into these albums by selecting them and choosing "Add to Album."

Your screenshots count toward your device storage. If you're running low on storage space, reviewing and deleting old or unnecessary screenshots can help free up room. You can check how much storage your photos and screenshots are using by going to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and looking at the Photos category.

Practical Takeaway: Set a monthly reminder to review your screenshots album and delete ones you no longer need. This habit keeps your device storage healthy and makes it quicker to locate screenshots you actually want to keep.

Editing Screenshots with Markup Tools

After taking a screenshot, the immediate markup tools offer several ways to annotate or modify your image. When the thumbnail appears in the lower-left corner, tapping it opens the markup interface. This interface includes drawing tools, text options, shapes, magnification, and a signature feature. All these tools are built into iOS and available without installing additional apps.

The drawing tool lets you draw freehand on the screenshot using your finger or an Apple Pencil (on iPad screenshots). You can select different pen colors, including black, red, yellow, green, blue, and purple. The pen thickness can be adjusted from thin to thick, allowing you to create fine details or bold strokes. Some users sketch arrows or circles to highlight specific areas of the screenshot.

Text tools allow you to add typed text directly on your screenshot. Tap the text icon (a capital "T"), then tap where you want text to appear and type your message. You can change the text color and size to make it stand out. This feature is useful for adding captions, labels, or explanations to your screenshots.
