How to Show Hidden Apps on Your Phone or Computer

Understanding Hidden Apps and Why They Exist

Hidden apps are applications on your phone or computer that don't appear in your normal app drawer, home screen, or program menu. They're still installed and running on your device, but they're intentionally concealed from immediate view. This feature exists for several legitimate reasons that have nothing to do with secrecy or deception.

Operating systems like Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS include the ability to hide apps as a built-in feature. On Android devices, you can hide apps through your launcher settings. On iPhones, you can remove apps from your home screen while keeping them in your library. Windows computers allow you to unpin programs from your Start menu. These features help keep your interface clean and organized, especially if you have dozens of applications installed.

Many people hide apps to reduce clutter on their devices. If you have 50 or 60 apps installed but only use 15 regularly, hiding the others creates a simpler, more manageable screen. This is particularly useful on phones, where screen real estate is limited. A cluttered home screen can also slow down your device's performance, so removing visible app icons can actually help your phone run more smoothly.

System apps—programs that come pre-installed with your operating system—are sometimes hidden by default. Examples include backup utilities, diagnostic tools, and developer settings. These apps need to exist for your device to function properly, but they're not meant for daily user interaction. Manufacturers hide them to prevent accidental deletion or misuse.

Parental controls are another legitimate reason apps get hidden. Parents can hide certain applications on their children's devices to restrict access. Similarly, organization administrators might hide specific programs on work computers to control what employees can use.

Practical takeaway: Before looking for hidden apps, understand that they're hidden for a reason—usually to keep your interface organized or to prevent accidental misuse. If you're searching for a specific app you think is hidden, ask yourself first whether you intentionally hid it yourself.

How to Find Hidden Apps on Android Devices

Android makes it relatively straightforward to view hidden apps, though the exact steps vary depending on which launcher your phone uses. Most Android devices come with Google's Pixel Launcher or Samsung's One UI launcher, and each has slightly different methods for revealing hidden applications.

On devices using Google's default launcher, start by opening your app drawer—the icon that looks like a grid of dots, usually at the bottom center of your home screen. Once you're in the app drawer, look for a menu option. On most devices, this appears as three vertical dots in the upper right corner. Tap this menu, then look for an option called "Hide apps" or "Manage apps visibility." This screen will show you which apps are currently hidden and allow you to unhide them by toggling them back on.

Samsung phones using One UI have a similar but slightly different process. Open your Apps folder and tap the three-dot menu at the top right. Select "Show hidden apps" or "Unhide apps." You'll see a list of all hidden applications. Tap any app you want to unhide, and it will reappear on your home screen or in your app drawer.

If you use a third-party launcher like Nova Launcher, Microsoft Launcher, or Apex Launcher, the process differs again. These apps typically have their own settings menus. Open the launcher's settings, look for an option about "Hidden apps" or "App hide," and manage your visibility preferences from there.

Another way to find installed apps is through your phone's Settings menu. On most Android devices, go to Settings, then Apps or Application Manager. This screen shows every app installed on your device, including ones you can't see on your home screen. However, this method shows all apps, not just hidden ones, so you'll need to scroll through a longer list.

If you suspect an app is hidden but you can't remember its name, check your Google Play Store account. Your account maintains a list of every app you've ever installed. Open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, and select "Manage apps and device." Go to the "Manage" tab to see all apps associated with your account, including ones currently installed and ones you've previously removed.

Practical takeaway: The quickest way to view hidden apps on Android is through your launcher's app drawer settings—look for "Hide apps" in the menu. If you're unsure which launcher you use, open your app drawer and tap the menu icon to find your app visibility options.

Locating Hidden Apps on iPhones and iPads

Apple's approach to hidden apps is different from Android because of how iOS is structured. On iPhones and iPads, you don't truly "hide" apps in the same way—instead, you remove them from your home screen and organize them in the App Library. The App Library keeps all your apps organized by category, but they don't clutter your home screen.

To view all your apps on an iPhone, swipe left from your home screen until you reach the App Library—the screen that automatically appears at the far left. This shows every app installed on your device, organized into categories like Social, Productivity, Games, and Others. You can scroll through these categories or search for a specific app using the search bar at the top.

If you want to restore an app to your home screen, open the App Library, find the app, and press and hold it. Select "Add to Home Screen" to make it visible again on your main screens. This is the primary way to bring hidden apps back into view on iOS devices.

Another way to locate all installed apps is through the Settings menu. Open Settings, go to General, then select iPhone Storage (or iPad Storage). This shows a complete list of every app on your device, listed by the amount of storage space each one uses. You can scroll through this list to see apps you may have forgotten about or ones you removed from your home screen.

If you're looking for apps you deleted in the past, you can reinstall them from the App Store. Open the App Store, tap your profile icon at the top right, then select "Purchased." You'll see all apps you've ever purchased or downloaded, including free apps. You can reinstall any of them from this list, even if they're no longer on your device.

It's important to note that iOS doesn't have a feature to completely hide apps the way Android does. Every app installed on your iPhone or iPad can be found either on your home screen, in the App Library, or in Settings. There's no way to make an app truly invisible without deleting it entirely.

Practical takeaway: On iPhones, check the App Library (swipe left from your home screen) or Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see all installed apps. Unlike Android, iOS doesn't hide apps—it just removes them from your home screen.

Revealing Hidden Programs on Windows Computers

Windows computers have different ways of hiding programs depending on whether they're hidden from the Start menu, installed but not showing in programs lists, or genuinely system programs you need to access through special methods.

The most common type of hidden program on Windows is one that's simply unpinned from the Start menu or taskbar. To find these, open your Start menu and scroll down, or use the search function to look for the program by name. Even if it doesn't appear in your quick-access areas, it's still installed on your computer. You can find it by searching or by looking in your Programs and Features list.

To access Programs and Features, right-click your Start button and select "Settings." Go to Apps, then select "Apps and features." This shows every program installed on your computer, including ones you never see in your normal workflow. You can scroll through this list to find hidden or forgotten programs. This list is particularly useful for identifying what's taking up space on your hard drive.

Some programs install system utilities that don't appear in Programs and Features. These might include driver software, system maintenance tools, or diagnostic applications. To find these, you can check your Program Files folders directly. Open File Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86), and look through the folders. Each folder represents an installed program.

Windows also has system apps that hide by default because they're not meant for regular users to launch manually. To access these, you might need to open Task Scheduler, Device Manager, or Services. These are specialized administrative tools. To access them, right-click your Start button and select "Computer Management." From there, you can explore services
