How to Run Your Samsung Washer Self-Clean Cycle

Understanding Your Samsung Washer's Self-Clean Cycle

Samsung washing machines include a Self-Clean cycle designed to maintain the drum and internal components of your washer. This cycle runs water and detergent through the machine to remove bacteria, mold, and detergent buildup that can accumulate over time. Unlike a regular wash cycle that cleans your clothes, the Self-Clean cycle focuses on cleaning the machine itself.

The Self-Clean feature became standard on many Samsung washer models starting around 2010, though the exact functionality varies by model year and washer type. Front-load washers and top-load washers may have slightly different self-cleaning processes, but both serve the same basic purpose: preventing odors and extending the life of your machine.

Most Samsung washers display a "Self Clean" or "Tub Clean" button on the control panel. This button may be labeled differently depending on your specific model—some call it "Tub Selfclean," "Auto Clean," or simply "Clean." The cycle typically runs between 40 minutes to an hour, depending on your washer's size and model.

Regular use of this cycle can help prevent common washer problems like sour smells, visible mold growth, or performance issues. Industry data suggests that washers used 3-5 times per week benefit from running the self-clean cycle once monthly. However, if your household uses the washer more frequently or in humid conditions, running it twice monthly may be more beneficial.

Practical takeaway: Locate the Self-Clean button on your Samsung washer's control panel. Consult your owner's manual if you're unsure which button it is, as button placement and labeling vary by model. Write down the location for future reference.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Running the Self-Clean Cycle

Running the Self-Clean cycle on your Samsung washer is straightforward. Begin by ensuring the washer is empty—no clothes, no fabric softener, and no regular laundry detergent. The cycle works most effectively when the drum contains nothing but water and the specialized cleaning solution that the machine uses internally.

Next, locate the Self-Clean or Tub Clean button on your washer's control panel. On most Samsung models, this button sits among the other cycle options. Press and hold this button for 3 seconds. Some models require you to press it once, while others require a longer press. Check your user manual for the exact requirement for your specific model.

After pressing the button, your washer's display will show that the Self-Clean cycle has started. The machine will begin filling with water automatically. You may hear the drum rotating, and you'll notice water flowing through the tub. During the cycle, the washer heats the water to help break down buildup and kill bacteria. This heating process is why the cycle takes longer than a standard wash.

Do not open the door or interrupt the cycle once it has started. Let the machine complete the full cycle, which typically takes between 40 and 60 minutes depending on your model. Some Samsung washers display a countdown timer showing how much time remains. Others simply show that the cycle is running without specific timing information.

After the cycle finishes, open the door and wipe down the rubber gasket (the seal around the door opening) with a dry cloth. This step removes any excess moisture that could lead to mold growth. Leave the door open for 15-30 minutes to allow air circulation and complete drying.

Practical takeaway: Set a reminder on your phone or calendar to run the Self-Clean cycle on a regular schedule—monthly is a standard recommendation. This prevents the need to troubleshoot washer odors or performance problems later.

How Often to Run the Self-Clean Cycle

The frequency of running your Self-Clean cycle depends on several factors related to how you use your washer and your home environment. Homes in humid climates should consider running the cycle more often than those in dry climates, since moisture promotes mold and bacterial growth. Similarly, households that wash clothes frequently may need to run the cycle more regularly than those with lighter laundry loads.

Samsung's general recommendation for most households is to run the Self-Clean cycle once per month. This monthly frequency works well for families doing an average of 2-4 loads of laundry per week. If you wash clothes 5-7 days per week or live in a humid environment, running the cycle every 2-3 weeks may prevent buildup more effectively.

Certain conditions warrant more frequent self-cleaning. If you consistently use cold water for washing, sediment and detergent residue may accumulate faster than with hot water washing. If you use high amounts of detergent or fabric softener, more residue builds up in the machine. Additionally, if you leave wet clothes in the washer for extended periods, moisture creates an environment where bacteria and mold thrive more rapidly.

Watch for warning signs that indicate your washer needs the Self-Clean cycle sooner than your regular schedule. A sour or musty smell coming from the washer indicates bacterial or mold growth. Visible dark spots or streaks on the drum or gasket suggest mold formation. If you notice these signs, run the Self-Clean cycle immediately, then consider increasing your regular cleaning frequency.

Some Samsung washers include a maintenance reminder feature that alerts you when it's time to run the Self-Clean cycle. If your model has this feature, you'll see a notification on the display panel. Not all models include this feature, so checking your user manual can confirm whether your washer has automatic reminders.

Practical takeaway: Create a maintenance schedule based on your household's washing frequency and climate. If you live in a humid area or wash clothes daily, aim for every 2-3 weeks. For moderate use in dry climates, once monthly works well. Adjust based on any odor or performance changes you notice.

What to Do If the Self-Clean Cycle Won't Start

Sometimes the Self-Clean cycle may not start even when you press the button. The most common reason is that the washer door is not properly closed. Samsung washers have safety features that prevent any cycle from starting if the door latch doesn't engage fully. Make sure the door is completely shut and you hear a clicking sound that indicates the latch has engaged. Open and close the door firmly, then try pressing the Self-Clean button again.

Another frequent issue involves the control panel not responding to button presses. If multiple buttons seem unresponsive, the control panel may need a reset. Unplug your washer from the electrical outlet and leave it unplugged for 5-10 minutes. This allows the electronic control system to reset. Plug the washer back in and wait 30 seconds before trying the Self-Clean cycle again.

On some models, you may need to access Self-Clean through a menu system rather than a dedicated button. If your washer has a digital display with scrolling menu options, look for a settings or maintenance menu. Use the arrow buttons to navigate to Self-Clean or Tub Clean and select it. Your user manual will show the exact menu pathway for your specific model.

If the Self-Clean cycle starts but stops partway through, check that nothing is blocking the drain. A clogged drain can cause the cycle to pause or stop. Many Samsung washers have a drain filter that can accumulate lint, debris, or coins. Consult your manual for the location of this filter and follow instructions to clean it. Once clean, restart the Self-Clean cycle.

Power supply issues can also prevent the cycle from starting. Verify that your washer is plugged in securely and that the outlet works. You can test the outlet by plugging in another appliance. If the outlet doesn't work, try plugging the washer into a different outlet in your home. If problems persist after trying these steps, your washer may require professional service.

Practical takeaway: Before calling for service, verify that the door is fully closed and try resetting the washer by unplugging it for 10 minutes. Check your user manual for model-specific instructions about accessing Self-Clean through menu systems. These simple troubleshooting steps resolve most issues.

Maintenance Tasks to Combine With Self-Clean Cycles

While running the Self-Clean cycle, you can perform additional maintenance on your washer to keep it functioning optimally. The most important of these is cleaning the rubber gasket that se
