How to Reset Your GE Washing Machine

Understanding Your GE Washing Machine's Reset Function

A reset on a GE washing machine restores the appliance to its factory default settings. This process clears any programmed cycles, error codes, or custom settings that may have been saved to the machine's control system. GE manufactures several types of washing machines, including top-load and front-load models, and each type may have slightly different reset procedures. Understanding what a reset does and when you might need one helps you troubleshoot problems without calling for service.

Resets become necessary in several situations. Error codes on the display panel often indicate sensor malfunctions, water supply issues, or drum problems. Sometimes a reset clears these codes and allows normal operation to resume. Other times, you may want to reset the machine after a power outage, as electrical surges can confuse the machine's control board. Additionally, if you've customized settings like delay start times or cycle preferences and want to return to standard options, a reset accomplishes this. GE washing machines use different control systems depending on the model year and series, so the reset method varies between machines manufactured in different decades.

Before attempting any reset, check your specific model number, typically found on a sticker inside the door frame or on the back of the machine. Your model number determines which reset method works for your machine. Resetting a washing machine differs from restarting it—a restart simply turns the machine off and back on, while a reset returns all settings to original factory conditions.

Takeaway: Identify your GE washing machine model number before beginning the reset process, as different models require different procedures.

Reset Methods for Top-Load GE Washing Machines

Top-load GE washing machines with mechanical controls use a different reset process than machines with electronic displays. For older top-load models with dial controls and mechanical timers, the reset typically involves turning the cycle dial through its complete rotation. To perform this reset, close the lid and turn the dial all the way clockwise until it stops, then continue turning it back counterclockwise past the starting position. This action advances the machine through all cycle positions and returns the control system to its neutral state. Some models require you to hold the dial in a specific position for several seconds before releasing it.

Newer top-load models with electronic controls and digital displays have programmable functions accessed through button combinations. Many GE top-load washers manufactured after 2010 can be reset by holding the "Start/Pause" button for three to five seconds while the machine is in standby mode. The display typically shows a confirmation message or flashes when the reset begins. Let the machine complete the reset cycle, which may take up to one minute. During this time, you may hear clicking sounds from the control board as relays reset their positions.

For GE Hydrowave top-load models, press the "Start/Pause" button three times rapidly. This action triggers an automatic reset sequence. If your machine has a "Control Lock" feature that prevents accidental button presses, you must unlock the controls before attempting the reset. Hold the unlock button, usually marked with a lock symbol, until you see a confirmation light turn off.

Some top-load models require unplugging the machine from the electrical outlet for five to ten minutes, then plugging it back in. This method drains residual power from the control board and forces it to reinitialize. When you plug the machine back in, you may see all control lights flash briefly before returning to normal operation.

Takeaway: Top-load GE washing machines typically reset using either dial rotation, button combination sequences, or power cycle methods, depending on whether the model uses mechanical or electronic controls.

Reset Procedures for Front-Load GE Washing Machines

Front-load GE washing machines, including the popular GE Washer series, use electronic control boards that respond to specific button sequences or power cycles. The most common reset method for modern front-load GE washers involves the power button. Press and hold the power button for three to five seconds to turn the machine off completely. Wait for ten to fifteen seconds, then press the power button again to turn it back on. This sequence allows the control board to clear temporary programming errors and reset cycle memories.

For GE front-load washers with touchscreen displays, the reset process may require entering a diagnostic mode. Some models allow you to access this by rapidly pressing specific buttons in sequence. For example, on certain GE models, pressing "Options," "Energy Saver," and "Start/Pause" in rapid succession activates diagnostic functions where you can select a complete reset option. The display will prompt you to confirm the reset before proceeding. This process completely erases all custom settings and returns the machine to factory defaults.

Another effective method for front-load GE washers involves disconnecting the power source entirely. Unplug the washing machine from the electrical outlet and wait for at least five minutes. This waiting period allows all power stored in the control board's capacitors to dissipate completely. Reconnect the machine and wait another minute before attempting to use it. This type of hard reset forces the control board to reinitialize all systems and often resolves error codes or frozen controls.

GE front-load machines with Wi-Fi connectivity may store error codes in cloud-based memory. If the machine connects to a mobile app, you might be able to clear some error codes through the app interface before performing a physical reset. Check your machine's manual or the GE mobile app documentation to learn whether your model supports remote troubleshooting features.

Takeaway: Front-load GE washing machines reset through power button sequences, diagnostic mode access, or complete power disconnection, with the specific method depending on the model's control system type.

Step-by-Step Reset Instructions for Common GE Models

GE model GTWN8250DWS (top-load): Turn off the washing machine and locate the cycle selector dial on the control panel. Grasp the dial firmly and turn it clockwise through all cycle positions until it completes a full rotation and returns to its starting position. This action resets the water level sensors and cycle memory. Release the dial when it stops naturally. Close the lid and leave the machine unplugged for five minutes to complete the reset process.

GE model GFWS1600DWS (front-load): Press the power button to turn off the machine. Locate the "Options" button on the control panel and press it five times rapidly. The display should show "Reset" or a similar confirmation message. Press the "Start/Pause" button to confirm the reset selection. The machine will beep once and the display will clear, indicating successful reset completion. Allow the machine to sit powered on for one minute before attempting normal operation.

GE model GE Hydrowave GTWN5250DWS: Power off the machine using the power button. Quickly press the "Start/Pause" button three consecutive times without pausing between presses. You should hear a click or relay activation sound from inside the control panel. The display may flash or show a reset confirmation. Wait thirty seconds for the reset to complete before using the machine.

GE model GFDS1610DWS (front-load, newer model): Unplug the washing machine from the electrical outlet. Wait ten minutes. Plug the machine back in. Press and hold the power button for three seconds to activate the machine. The control board will reinitialize. If error codes were previously displayed, they should now be cleared.

For any model, if you don't see a response after attempting the reset, consult your specific manual or contact GE customer service with your model number for exact instructions tailored to your machine.

Takeaway: Different GE models require different reset procedures, so matching your exact model number to the correct steps increases success rates and prevents damage to the control system.

Troubleshooting Issues When Reset Doesn't Work

Sometimes a reset doesn't resolve problems because the issue originates in hardware rather than software. Error codes that persist after a reset may indicate faulty sensors, water valve failures, or drain pump malfunctions. For example, error code E21 or E22 on many GE models indicates a drain problem—typically a clogged drain hose or defective drain pump. Resetting won't fix these physical issues. Similarly, error codes related to water temperature sensors or water level switches point to hardware failures that require component replacement rather than software correction.
