How to Renew Your Colorado Driver's License

Understanding Colorado Driver's License Renewal Requirements

A Colorado driver's license is a government-issued document that allows you to drive legally in the state and serves as an official form of identification. Like all driver's licenses, Colorado licenses expire after a set period, and the state requires renewal to keep your driving privileges current. Understanding when and how your license expires is the first step in managing your driving documentation.

Colorado driver's licenses are valid for different lengths of time depending on your age and the type of license you hold. Standard Class D licenses (the most common type for regular drivers) are valid for five years. However, if you are under 21 years old, your license is valid for only four years. Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDLs) follow different rules and typically need renewal every four or five years depending on federal requirements.

Your license expiration date is printed directly on the front of your card. The format shows the month and year when your license expires. For example, if your license shows "03/15/2025," it expires in March 2025. It is important to check this date periodically so you know when to start thinking about renewal. You can also log into the Colorado Department of Revenue's online portal or call their customer service line to verify your expiration date if you are unsure.

Colorado law prohibits driving with an expired license. If you are pulled over by law enforcement and your license has expired, you may receive a citation and a fine, even if you were otherwise following traffic laws. Renewing your license before it expires protects you from legal consequences and ensures you remain in compliance with state requirements.

Practical Takeaway: Check your license's expiration date today. Mark your calendar three to six months before that date so you have time to complete the renewal process without rushing. This gives you a comfortable window to gather any required documents and schedule an appointment if necessary.

Renewal Options: In-Person, Mail, and Online Methods

Colorado offers multiple ways to renew your driver's license, each with different requirements and timelines. The method you choose depends on your specific situation, how much time you have, and whether your license qualifies for renewal through each channel. Understanding your options helps you pick the most efficient path for your circumstances.

In-person renewal at a Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office is the most common method and works for nearly all drivers. You will need to visit a local DMV office, bring required documents, have your photo taken, and pay the renewal fee. As of 2024, the renewal fee for a standard five-year Class D license is $28.25. In-person renewal typically takes 15 to 45 minutes depending on how busy the office is. Colorado has DMV offices in most counties, including major locations in Denver, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Boulder, and many smaller towns. You can find your nearest office and hours on the Colorado DMV website.

Mail renewal is an option for some drivers who meet specific conditions. Generally, you may renew by mail if your license is not expired (or expired less than two years ago), you have no medical or vision restrictions that need updating, and you have not had any license suspensions or revocations. To renew by mail, you complete a renewal form, include payment, and mail everything to the Colorado DMV. This process typically takes two to three weeks from when the DMV receives your materials. The mail renewal form is available on the Colorado DMV website.

Online renewal through the Colorado DMV website is now available for many drivers and offers the quickest option. You can renew online if your license is not expired (or expired less than two years ago) and you do not have certain restrictions. The online process takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and you will receive a temporary digital license on your phone immediately while your physical card arrives by mail within 5 to 10 business days. Online renewal costs the same $28.25 fee and can be completed from your home at any time of day.

Practical Takeaway: If your license is not yet expired and has no medical restrictions, try online renewal first—it is the fastest method. If you cannot renew online, check whether mail renewal works for you before planning a trip to the DMV office. In-person renewal is most important for drivers with expired licenses, medical conditions, or vision changes.

Required Documents and Information for Renewal

Before you begin the renewal process, gather the specific documents Colorado requires. Having everything ready before you submit your renewal prevents delays and rejection of incomplete applications. The documents needed vary slightly depending on whether you renew online, by mail, or in person, but several are standard across all methods.

You must provide proof of identity using one of Colorado's accepted documents. Valid forms include a U.S. passport, passport card, military ID, tribal ID, or a previous Colorado driver's license or ID card. If your passport or military ID will expire within 60 days, it may not be accepted as current proof of identity. You must also provide proof of Colorado residency. Accepted documents include a current utility bill, lease agreement, mortgage statement, property tax notice, bank statement, insurance policy, or government letter (such as a tax return or Social Security statement) that shows your name and current Colorado address. The document must show a date within the last 60 days. If you have recently moved, your utility company or bank statement is usually the easiest proof to obtain.

You will need your Social Security number. If you do not have a Social Security number, you will need to provide a valid Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Your date of birth and current contact information (phone number and email address) are also required. If you have changed your name since your last license through marriage, divorce, or legal name change, bring a certified copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order showing the name change.

For in-person renewal, bring your current Colorado driver's license or ID card if you still have it. If your license was lost or stolen, bring a police report or a statement explaining what happened. When renewing online or by mail, you will need to provide your license number and enter other information from your current or previous license.

If you are renewing a commercial driver's license (CDL), the requirements are more extensive. You must provide medical certification showing you meet federal health standards for operating commercial vehicles. This certification, called a Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC), must be completed by a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)-certified medical examiner. You cannot renew a CDL without this documentation.

Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist of required documents and gather them before starting your renewal. For residency proof, a recent utility bill or bank statement works fastest. If you have moved recently, request a new statement from your utility company or bank online or by phone—most provide them within a few days. Having these items ready prevents multiple trips or delays in processing.

Online Renewal: Visit the Colorado DMV website and locate the license renewal section. Click on "Renew Your Driver License" and select the online renewal option. You will enter your driver's license number and answer verification questions based on information in the DMV database. Next, review your personal information and update anything that has changed, such as your address, phone number, or email. Select whether you want to register to vote in Colorado (this is optional). Review a photo of yourself from the DMV records—this is the photo that will appear on your renewed license unless you request a new photo. If you want a new photo, you can request one, though it may delay your renewal by a few weeks. Enter payment information and complete the transaction. You will receive a confirmation number and can often download a temporary digital license to your phone immediately. Your physical card will arrive by mail within 5 to 10 business days.

Mail Renewal: Obtain the renewal form (Application for Driver License/Identification Card Renewal) from the Colorado DMV website or by calling their customer service line. Complete the form in black or blue ink, providing all requested information. Gather your required documents—proof of identity and residency. Make a copy of both documents for your records if you wish. Write a check or money order for the $28.25 renewal fee (do not send cash).
