How to Reline Your Dentures at Home

Understanding Denture Relining and When It's Needed

Denture relining is a process that adjusts the fit of your dentures by adding material to the inside surface that contacts your gums. Over time, your jawbone changes shape—a process called resorption—which causes dentures to become loose and uncomfortable. This happens because the bone that once supported your teeth naturally shrinks after tooth loss. Studies show that patients lose approximately 25% of their jaw bone width in the first year after tooth extraction, and the process continues at about 4% per year for several years afterward.

There are two main types of relining: hard relining and soft relining. Hard relining involves using a durable acrylic material that bonds permanently to your denture base and can last several years. Soft relining uses a cushioned material that feels more comfortable against tender gums but typically needs replacement every 6 to 12 months because it breaks down more quickly. Professional relining at a dentist's office involves specialized equipment and materials, but temporary at-home relining kits offer a more affordable option for maintaining your dentures between professional appointments.

Common signs that your dentures need relining include increased movement when you talk or eat, visible gaps between the denture and your gums, soreness or irritation on your gums, difficulty keeping dentures in place without using excess adhesive, and a noticeably loose fit compared to when you first received them. You might also notice your dentures feel less stable when you bite down or that food particles get trapped more easily underneath them.

Home relining kits typically cost between $15 and $30, while professional relining at a dental office ranges from $150 to $400 depending on your location and the type of relining performed. Home kits work best for minor adjustments and can extend the life of your dentures until you can schedule a professional appointment. However, they are not a permanent replacement for professional relining. A practical takeaway: monitor your denture fit monthly and consider at-home relining when you first notice minor looseness—addressing the problem early prevents more serious fit issues.

Selecting the Right At-Home Relining Kit

At-home denture relining kits are available at most pharmacies, drugstores, and online retailers. Common brands include Ceka, Permasoft, and Denture Reliner brands sold under various store labels. These kits contain thermoplastic material that softens in warm water and hardens as it cools, creating a new fitting surface on your denture. The material is formulated to bond to your denture base without damaging it, and most kits include detailed instructions with step-by-step photographs.

When selecting a kit, look for products that clearly indicate they work with both upper and lower dentures, as some kits are designed for one or the other. Check the expiration date on the package—the thermoplastic material loses its effectiveness over time. Read customer reviews on retail websites, paying particular attention to comments about how long the relining lasts and whether users found the instructions clear. Some kits include tools like mixing bowls or application spatulas, which can reduce the need to gather supplies from your kitchen.

Before purchasing, verify that the kit is designed for your type of denture. Traditional acrylic dentures work well with most at-home kits, but flexible dentures or dentures with special coatings may not be compatible. If you have partial dentures rather than full dentures, confirm the kit works for partial applications. Some people with sensitive skin or latex allergies should review the ingredient list to ensure the relining material doesn't contain irritants.

Read the instructions completely before opening the kit. Some kits require mixing multiple components, while others simply need heating. Understand the timing requirements—most kits specify exact water temperatures and how long the material must sit before use. Gather all necessary supplies beforehand: a bowl for warm water (thermometer helpful), a towel, your dentures, and any applicators included in the kit. A practical takeaway: purchase your kit at least a few days before you plan to use it so you can read instructions thoroughly and gather any additional supplies you might need.

Preparing Your Dentures and Workspace

Proper preparation is essential for successful at-home relining. Begin by thoroughly cleaning your dentures with a denture brush and mild soap or denture cleaner. Remove all adhesive residue, food particles, and biofilm from both the outer and inner surfaces. Soak your dentures in a denture cleanser solution for 15 to 20 minutes if they have stubborn buildup, then scrub them gently with a soft-bristled brush. Rinse completely under running water and pat dry with a clean towel. Any remaining debris or adhesive can interfere with the bonding of the new relining material.

Inspect your dentures for cracks or damage before relining. If you notice cracks, gaps, or broken areas, do not attempt home relining—these issues require professional repair. Check that your denture base is smooth and free of rough spots. If you find small rough areas, you can gently sand them with fine-grit sandpaper (220-grit or higher) to create a better surface for the new material to bond. Rinse away any dust created by sanding.

Set up your workspace in a clean, well-lit area near a sink with hot water access. Lay out all kit components, tools, and supplies on a flat surface. Use old towels or newspaper to protect your work area from spills or accidental staining—relining materials can be difficult to remove from fabric and surfaces once they harden. Have a clock or timer visible so you can track water temperatures and timing requirements. Fill a bowl with warm water according to kit instructions—most require water between 140 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit (60-71 degrees Celsius). Use a cooking thermometer to verify the water temperature, as water that's too hot can damage your dentures and water that's too cool won't properly soften the relining material.

Prepare a second bowl of cool water for rinsing your hands during the process. Have paper towels or a clean cloth nearby to wipe your hands frequently—relining material can stick to skin and is easier to remove while still warm. If you wear glasses, consider removing them temporarily since steam may fog them during the heating process. A practical takeaway: spend 10 minutes on preparation—clean dentures, correct water temperature, and organized supplies directly determine whether your relining will succeed or fail.

The Step-by-Step Relining Process

Begin by following the specific instructions included with your kit, as different products have slightly different procedures. Most at-home kits work as follows: remove the thermoplastic relining material from its packaging and knead it in your hands for about one minute to warm it slightly and make it more pliable. The material should be soft but not sticky at this stage. Submerge the material in your bowl of warm water (maintaining the temperature specified in your instructions) for the time period listed—typically 30 to 60 seconds. The material will soften and become moldable, changing color or texture to indicate it's ready to use.

Remove the softened material from the water and allow it to cool for approximately 20 to 30 seconds—the exact timing varies by product. The material should be warm enough to mold but cool enough that it doesn't feel uncomfortable in your mouth. Some people test the temperature on their wrist first, similar to checking bathwater temperature. Begin applying the softened material to the inner surface of your denture (the surface that contacts your gums) by pressing it firmly and evenly across the entire fitting surface. Work from the center outward, smoothing as you go. Don't apply too much material—a thin, even layer works better than thick spots.

Once the material is applied, insert your denture into your mouth and bite down gently on your back teeth. Hold this position for the time specified in your instructions—usually 3 to 5 minutes. Maintain gentle, consistent pressure without clenching hard. Some kits recommend moving your denture slightly side to side or forward and backward to help the material conform to your gum contours. Pay attention to any areas that feel tight or uncomfortable—slight discomfort is normal during this process, but sharp pain indicates a problem. Remove the denture from your mouth carefully.

Once removed, place your denture in cool water to complete the hardening process for the time period specified. The material will become rigid and form-fitting. After hardening is complete, rinse your denture thoroughly under cool running water and examine the results. The relining material should cover
