How to Relight Your Water Heater Pilot Light

Understanding Your Water Heater Pilot Light and Why It Goes Out

A pilot light is a small flame that burns continuously inside your water heater. Its main job is to ignite the main burner when your water heater needs to heat water. Think of it like the spark that starts a larger fire. Most traditional gas water heaters rely on this pilot light to function properly. When the thermostat detects that the water temperature has dropped below your set level, it signals the gas valve to open. The pilot light then ignites the main burner, which heats the water in the tank. Once the water reaches the desired temperature, the burner shuts off, but the pilot light continues burning, waiting for the next heating cycle.

The pilot light goes out for several common reasons. A draft from an open window, door, or vent can extinguish the small flame. Low water pressure or gas pressure in your line may prevent the pilot from staying lit. Dirt or debris can clog the pilot opening, blocking the gas flow. The thermocouple—a safety device that keeps gas flowing to the pilot—may become faulty or misaligned. Sometimes the pilot light simply needs relighting after a power outage or routine maintenance. Understanding these causes helps you determine whether relighting is a simple task or whether you need professional repair. Most pilot light outages are minor issues that you can address yourself with basic steps and caution.

Practical Takeaway: Before attempting to relight your pilot, identify whether the outage might be caused by a draft, low pressure, or a mechanical issue. If you've recently had construction work, opened windows frequently, or experienced a gas service interruption, the pilot likely just needs relighting. If the pilot light repeatedly goes out within days or weeks, you may have a thermocouple problem that requires professional service.

Safety Precautions and When to Call a Professional

Your safety is the most important consideration when working with gas appliances. Before you begin any work on your water heater, turn off the gas supply at the control valve. This valve is typically located on the side or front of your water heater. You'll see a knob or lever marked with "On," "Off," and sometimes "Pilot." Turn it to the "Off" position. Wait at least five minutes before attempting to relight the pilot. This waiting period allows any accumulated gas to disperse safely from the combustion chamber. Never skip this step, as attempting to light a pilot with excess gas present can create a dangerous situation.

Certain situations require professional assistance from a licensed technician. If you smell gas coming from your water heater, do not attempt to relight the pilot yourself. Turn off the gas supply at the meter or tank, leave your home, and call your gas company from a safe location. If you see water leaking from the tank or around the base of the heater, this indicates a leak that requires professional repair. If the pilot light ignites but the main burner does not start within a few seconds of hearing the ignition click, stop immediately and contact a technician. If the pilot light goes out repeatedly within days, despite proper relighting, this suggests a faulty thermocouple or control valve that a professional should inspect. Additionally, if you're uncomfortable working with gas appliances or unsure about any step in the process, calling a professional is always the right choice.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your water heater manufacturer's customer service number and keep it with your home maintenance records. Most water heater tanks last 8 to 12 years. If your water heater is more than 10 years old and experiences recurring pilot light failures, it may be more economical to replace the unit than to repair it repeatedly.

Locating and Preparing Your Water Heater's Pilot Assembly

The pilot assembly is located at the bottom front of your water heater, underneath the main burner chamber. To access it, you may need to remove a small access panel or door that covers the burner area. This panel is usually held in place with one or two clips or screws. Remove any obstacles from the area in front of your water heater to give yourself clear access and space to work safely. Some water heaters have a removable metal shroud that covers the pilot and burner; if yours does, carefully slide or unclip it to expose the pilot assembly.

Once you can see the pilot assembly, take a moment to identify its key components. The pilot burner is a small brass or metal tube with a tiny opening at the tip—this is where the flame burns. Just above or beside it, you'll see the thermocouple, which looks like a thin metal rod or probe. Near the base of the assembly, you'll find the pilot gas line, a small copper or brass tube that carries gas to the pilot burner. Some water heaters have a piezo igniter (a small button you push to create a spark) or an electronic igniter. Others use a standing pilot that must be lit with an external flame. Your water heater's model and age determine which ignition method it uses.

Before touching anything, ensure adequate ventilation in your water heater's location. Water heaters should be in rooms with proper air circulation. If your heater is in a basement or enclosed closet, crack open a door or window to allow fresh air to flow through the space. This ventilation reduces the risk of gas accumulation and makes the relighting process safer. Ensure you have good lighting—a flashlight or headlamp is helpful since the pilot assembly is located in a darker area below the main burner chamber. Have a long-handled lighter or long match ready; standard short matches are difficult and unsafe to use for lighting a pilot.

Practical Takeaway: Take a photo or video of your pilot assembly before disconnecting anything. This reference helps you remember how components were positioned if you need to reassemble them. Label any wires or connections with painter's tape if you need to disconnect components, making reassembly straightforward and error-free.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Relighting Your Pilot Light

Begin by turning the control valve to the "Off" position and waiting five minutes for any gas to disperse. Next, locate the control knob or dial on your water heater's control panel. This panel is typically mounted on the front of the heater, often with a red or black dial. Turn this knob to the "Pilot" setting. Some models use a "Light" or "Ignite" position instead. Once you've set the dial to "Pilot," look for a small button nearby—this is usually the gas valve button. Press and hold this button while simultaneously attempting to light the pilot burner with your long-handled lighter or long match. Hold the flame near the pilot burner opening at the tip of the small brass tube. You should see a small blue flame ignite at the burner tip.

Continue holding the button down for 30 to 60 seconds after the flame appears. This allows the thermocouple to heat up sufficiently to signal the gas valve to remain open. The thermocouple is a safety device that only allows gas to flow when it detects heat from a burning pilot light. If you release the button too quickly, the pilot will go out once the thermocouple cools. If the pilot lights but immediately goes out when you release the button, try again and hold the button longer—up to 90 seconds. After you've held the button for an adequate time, slowly release it while watching the pilot flame. If the flame remains burning steadily, your relighting was successful.

Once the pilot light is burning reliably, turn the control knob from "Pilot" to "On" or to your desired water temperature setting (usually marked in degrees Fahrenheit, such as 120°F or 140°F). You should hear a click as the main burner ignites, followed by a larger flame in the combustion chamber below the burner. This indicates that your water heater is now operational and heating water. Allow the heater to run for a few minutes and check that the pilot light remains on and the main burner is operating. The main burner flame should be primarily blue with perhaps a small amount of yellow at the tip—this is normal. If the main burner doesn't ignite or if you see excessive yellow or orange flames, this may indicate a problem requiring professional service.

Practical Takeaway: If your first attempt doesn't work, wait 5 minutes before trying again. Repeated attempts to light the pilot without adequate waiting time can allow too much gas to accumulate. After three unsuccessful attempts, stop and allow the area to ventilate for 15 minutes before trying again. If the pilot still won't stay lit after multiple attempts, contact a licensed
