How to Pay Your Water Bill in Broward County

Understanding Broward County Water Service and Billing

Broward County provides water and wastewater services to more than 1.6 million residents across the county. The Broward County Water and Wastewater Services department manages the infrastructure that delivers clean water to homes and businesses, as well as the systems that treat and dispose of wastewater. When you receive a water bill, you're paying for both the water delivered to your property and the treatment of the wastewater that leaves your home.

Water bills in Broward County typically include several components. The base service charge covers the cost of maintaining the water and wastewater infrastructure. The volume charge is based on how much water you use, measured in cubic feet or gallons. Some bills may also include stormwater fees, which fund drainage and flood management systems. Understanding what appears on your bill helps you know exactly what you're paying for and why costs may vary from month to month.

Broward County uses a tiered pricing structure, meaning the rate per unit of water may increase as you use more water. This encourages conservation while keeping basic water access affordable. A typical household uses between 4,000 and 8,000 gallons per month, though this varies based on family size, outdoor watering, and seasonal changes. During summer months when people water lawns and use more outdoor water, bills tend to be higher.

Your account number appears on every bill and serves as your unique identifier in the Broward County system. You'll need this number when paying bills, asking about charges, or updating your account information. The account number typically appears in the upper portion of your bill.

Practical Takeaway: Locate your account number on a recent bill and keep it handy. Understanding the different components of your bill—service charges, volume charges, and any additional fees—helps you track your water usage patterns and identify when consumption changes.

To set up automatic payments, you can contact Broward County Water and Wastewater Services by phone or visit their office. You'll need to provide your bank routing number and account number. Automatic payment ensures your bill is paid on time every month without requiring you to take action, though you should still review your bills to monitor your water usage.

To create an online account, visit the Broward County Water and Wastewater Services website and look for the option to register or create an account. You'll typically need to provide your account number (from your bill), your service address, and create a username and password. The registration process usually takes just a few minutes. Once your account is activated, you can log in anytime to view your information.

Your online account displays several pieces of useful information. Your current bill shows the charges for the current billing period, broken down by service type. Your payment history shows all payments you've made over the past year or more, helping you verify that payments were received and processed correctly. Your usage data may show how much water you consumed during the current and previous billing periods, often displayed in comparison to previous months or seasons. Some accounts show a graph of your usage over time, which helps you spot trends and identify whether your water consumption is increasing.

Online accounts also allow you to update certain information. You can change the email address associated with your account to receive bill notifications or payment reminders. Some accounts allow you to set up paperless billing, which means you receive email notifications when your bill is ready instead of receiving a paper bill in the mail. You can typically download and print bills from your online account for your records.

If you have questions about what you see in your online account or need to update information that isn't available online, you can contact Broward County Water and Wastewater Services through the contact information on their website. Customer service representatives can explain specific charges, answer questions about your usage, and help you make changes to your account.

Practical Takeaway: Set up your online account and bookmark the website for future reference. Check your account at least once a month to review your bill before payment is due. Monitoring your account regularly helps you catch billing errors early and track whether your water usage is changing, which can indicate a leak or other issues requiring attention.

Understanding Billing Cycles and Due Dates

Broward County sends water bills on a regular monthly cycle. Your billing cycle date depends on your service address and location within Broward County, as the county staggers billing throughout the month to distribute customer service workload evenly. Your bill shows the specific billing period it covers—typically a range of dates about 30 days apart—and the due date for payment.

Due dates are typically 20 to 25 days after the bill is issued. Your bill clearly shows the due date in a prominent location, often in red or bold text. To avoid late fees, you should submit payment by the date shown on your bill. Late fees generally apply to payments received after the due date, and these fees add to the amount you owe. If your payment arrives after the due date, contact Broward County to ask whether late fees have been applied.

The billing period shown on your bill indicates the dates of water usage included in that bill. For example, a bill might cover usage from March 1 through March 31. The bill issue date is when Broward County generates and sends the bill. The due date is when payment should be received. Understanding these dates helps you plan your payment timing. If you pay online or by mail, remember that the payment needs time to process, so don't wait until the due date to submit it.

If you've recently moved to a new address or started service in Broward County, your first bill may arrive several weeks after service begins. The first bill covers the period from when service started through the end of your first billing cycle. This bill is usually larger than subsequent bills because it covers a longer period. Subsequent bills should be for approximately one month of usage at regular rates.

Seasonal variations affect your bill amount. During winter months in Florida, most people use less water because outdoor watering is minimal and indoor usage is typically lower. During summer, water usage increases due to lawn irrigation, more outdoor activity, and higher evaporation rates. Your bill may be significantly higher in summer months than in winter
