How to Pay Your BGE Bill Online and By Mail

Understanding BGE and Your Billing Account

BGE, which stands for Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, is a utility company that provides natural gas and electric service to customers in central Maryland and Washington, D.C. If you receive a BGE bill, you're a customer of one of the largest utility providers in the Mid-Atlantic region. BGE serves approximately 1.3 million customers across its service territory, making it a major provider of essential utilities to residential and business customers alike.

Your BGE account is unique to you and contains important information about your service address, account number, and billing history. When you receive a BGE bill, it shows the charges for the gas and electric services you used during the billing period, which typically runs for about 30 days. Understanding the basics of your account helps you manage your payments more effectively and keep track of your utility expenses.

Each BGE bill includes several key pieces of information: your account number (a unique identifier for your account), the billing period dates, meter readings, kilowatt-hour usage for electricity, therms used for gas, and itemized charges for each service. The bill also shows any previous balance from the prior month, current charges, and the total amount due. Payment instructions appear on every bill, including the due date and available payment options.

Your account number is particularly important because you'll need it to pay your bill online or by mail. This number appears at the top of your bill and is required to set up online payment. If you can't locate your bill or account number, you can call BGE's customer service to request this information. Having your account number readily available makes the payment process faster and reduces the chance of errors.

Takeaway: Keep your BGE bill in an accessible location and note your account number. This makes it simple to reference billing information and complete payments whenever you're ready.

Setting Up Online Bill Payment Through the BGE Website

BGE provides an online payment option through its official website, which allows you to pay your bill from your computer or mobile device at any time of day. To begin paying online, visit the BGE website and look for the "Pay My Bill" or "Make a Payment" option, typically found on the homepage. You'll be directed to a secure payment portal where you can enter your payment information.

To make a payment online, you'll need your BGE account number and the amount you want to pay. BGE accepts payments through bank account transfers (ACH payments) or credit and debit cards. If you're paying with a bank account, you'll need your routing number and account number. For card payments, you'll enter your card information on the secure portal. BGE's payment system uses encryption technology to protect your financial information during the transaction.

One advantage of paying online is timing flexibility. You can make a payment at 2 a.m. on a Sunday if that's convenient for you—the BGE payment system operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, it's important to know that payments made online may take one to two business days to post to your account. This means if your due date is tomorrow, paying online today might not prevent a late fee. BGE recommends paying several days before your due date to ensure the payment posts in time.

BGE also offers an option to set up recurring online payments, sometimes called "autopay." This means your bill can be paid automatically each month without you having to log in and make the payment manually. You can choose to pay the full statement balance or a fixed amount each month. To set up autopay, you'll need to provide authorization, but you can cancel or modify it at any time through your account settings.

Takeaway: Online payment through BGE's website offers round-the-clock convenience, but plan ahead because payments take one to two business days to process. Consider setting up autopay if you prefer to have your bill paid automatically each month.

Creating and Using Your BGE Online Account

BGE allows customers to create a personal online account on their website, which gives you access to multiple tools beyond just making payments. Creating an account takes about 5 to 10 minutes and requires basic information: your name, address, account number, and a valid email address. Once you've created your account, you'll set up a username and password that you'll use to log in whenever you want to access your account.

After logging into your BGE account online, you can view several types of information about your service. You can see your current bill, review past bills and payment history, check your account balance, and view your usage patterns for both gas and electricity. Many customers find this usage information particularly helpful because it shows how their consumption changes with the seasons. For example, you might notice that your gas usage increases significantly during winter months when heating is necessary, or that electricity usage spikes during summer when air conditioning runs frequently.

The online account portal also allows you to change certain account settings, such as updating your contact information, changing your mailing address, or modifying your notification preferences. Some customers opt to receive email alerts when their bill is ready to view or when a payment has been processed. These notifications can help you stay on top of your billing without having to remember to check your email or wait for a paper bill to arrive.

BGE's online account system provides what's called "paperless billing" or "ebilling." If you enroll in this option, you won't receive a paper bill in the mail—instead, you'll receive a notification by email that your bill is ready to view online. This can be a convenient option if you prefer digital records and want to reduce paper waste. You can typically change back to paper billing at any time if you prefer to receive physical bills.

Takeaway: Creating a BGE online account gives you around-the-clock access to your bill, payment history, and usage information. Consider enrolling in paperless billing if you're comfortable managing your account digitally.

Paying Your BGE Bill by Mail

If you prefer not to pay online, BGE accepts payment by mail. To pay by mail, you'll write a check or money order for the amount due on your bill. Your BGE bill includes a section near the bottom labeled "Payment Stub" or "Remittance Section." This section has your account number, current amount due, and other relevant information printed on it. You should tear off this payment stub and include it with your check or money order when you mail your payment.

The reason it's important to include the payment stub is that it helps BGE's payment processing system automatically match your payment to your account. Without the stub, BGE staff would need to manually look up your account and apply the payment, which could take longer. If you've lost or don't have the payment stub, you can still mail a check with your account number written on it, but including the stub makes the process more efficient.

Mail your check or money order to the address printed on your bill. BGE typically has a specific mailing address for payments, which appears on the bill itself. Don't send payment to BGE's customer service address or administrative offices—these are different from the payment processing address. Using the correct address ensures your payment reaches the payment processing center quickly. Typically, the payment mailing address includes a note about which city the mail is being sent to, such as a specific processing center location.

Processing times for mailed payments are longer than online payments. After you mail a check, it typically takes 5 to 10 business days for the payment to arrive at BGE's processing center, be opened, recorded, and posted to your account. If your due date is within the next week, mailing a check is risky because it may not arrive and be processed in time to avoid a late fee. BGE's policy is that payments are considered on-time if they're received by the due date, not if they're mailed by the due date. To be safe, if you're paying by mail, send your payment at least two weeks before the due date.

Takeaway: Paying by mail is a straightforward option if you prefer writing a check, but plan ahead because it takes 5 to 10 business days for the payment to post to your account. Always include your payment stub and mail to the specific address shown on your bill.

Payment Methods, Fees, and Important Dates

BGE accepts several different payment methods depending on how you choose to pay. For online payments through their website or mobile app, you can pay with a bank account transfer (ACH), Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover card. It's important to note that BGE may charge a fee for paying with
