How to Open an Incognito Tab Guide

What Is an Incognito Tab and How It Works

An incognito tab is a private browsing mode available in most web browsers. When you open an incognito tab, your browser stops recording certain information about your online activity. Understanding how incognito mode works helps you know what it does and does not do.

When you use a regular tab, your browser saves information like your browsing history, cookies, and search queries. This data stays on your computer and helps websites remember you when you return. In contrast, incognito tabs do not save this information to your computer. Once you close an incognito tab, the browser deletes temporary files associated with that session.

Incognito mode works by creating an isolated browsing session. Websites you visit in incognito tabs still see that you are visiting them, and your internet service provider can still see which websites you access. However, the browser itself does not retain a record of your activity on your device. This distinction is important: incognito mode protects your privacy from other people who use your computer, not from websites or internet providers.

Different browsers use different names for this feature. Google Chrome calls it "Incognito mode." Mozilla Firefox uses the term "Private Window." Microsoft Edge calls it "InPrivate browsing." Safari on Apple devices refers to it as "Private browsing." Despite the different names, these features work in similar ways across browsers.

Cookies represent one key difference in incognito browsing. While your browser accepts cookies from websites in incognito mode, it does not save them after you close the tab. This means a website might remember information during your current session, but that memory disappears once you finish browsing.

Practical Takeaway: Use incognito tabs when you want your browser to stop saving information about your browsing session. This is useful for shopping on shared computers, testing how websites appear to new visitors, or keeping your browsing separate from your main browser history on your device.

Opening an Incognito Tab in Google Chrome

Google Chrome is one of the most widely used web browsers. Opening an incognito tab in Chrome takes just a few clicks or keyboard shortcuts. Learning multiple methods gives you options depending on your device and preference.

The keyboard shortcut is often the fastest way to open incognito mode in Chrome. On Windows and Linux computers, press Ctrl + Shift + N simultaneously. On Mac computers, use Command + Shift + N. This shortcut opens a new incognito window immediately without needing to navigate menus.

If you prefer using menus, click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of your Chrome window. This opens a dropdown menu with various options. Look for "New incognito window" in this menu and click it. A new window will open with a dark theme and an incognito icon, indicating that you are in private browsing mode.

You can also right-click on a link and select "Open link in new incognito window" to open a specific webpage directly in incognito mode. This method is useful when you want to visit a particular site without your browser recording the activity.

Chrome displays a distinctive icon and message when you open an incognito window. You will see the incognito symbol (typically a spy or masked figure) next to the address bar and in the browser tab. Chrome also displays text explaining that your activity is not saved to your device. This visual indicator helps you remember you are in private browsing mode.

Practical Takeaway: The keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+N (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+N (Mac) is the quickest way to open incognito mode in Chrome. If you forget the shortcut, use the menu method by clicking the three dots and selecting "New incognito window."

Opening an Incognito Tab in Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla Firefox calls its private browsing feature a "Private Window." Opening one in Firefox is straightforward and similar to Chrome. Firefox offers multiple methods to start a private browsing session.

The keyboard shortcut for Firefox private windows is Ctrl + Shift + P on Windows and Linux computers. On Mac, use Command + Shift + P. Like Chrome, this shortcut immediately opens a new private window without menu navigation.

Using the menu method, click the hamburger icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner of Firefox. This opens the main menu. Select "New Private Window" from the available options. A new window opens with a purple theme and a private browsing indicator to show you are in private mode.

Firefox also allows you to right-click links and select "Open Link in New Private Window" to open specific pages directly in private mode. You can also open the current tab in a private window through the menu options if needed.

Firefox displays a distinctive purple icon and mask symbol when you are in a private window. The browser also shows information about private browsing when you open the window, explaining that history, searches, and cookies are not saved. This helps users understand what private mode does.

One useful Firefox feature is the ability to set Firefox to always open in private mode. You can do this through Firefox settings if you prefer private browsing by default. Go to Settings, then Privacy & Security, and look for the Private Browsing section to configure this option.

Practical Takeaway: Use Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+P (Mac) to open a private window in Firefox. If you frequently use private browsing, consider setting Firefox to always start in private mode through the browser settings.

Opening an Incognito Tab in Microsoft Edge and Safari

In Microsoft Edge on Windows, the keyboard shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + P. On Mac, use Command + Shift + N. Edge also provides a menu option: click the three dots in the top-right corner and select "New InPrivate window." This opens a window with a blue theme and "InPrivate" indicator showing that your activity is not being saved.

Safari users on Mac can open a private window using Command + Shift + N. On iPad and iPhone, opening a private tab works differently. Tap the Tabs icon (which looks like two overlapping squares), then tap "Private" at the bottom of the screen, and create a new tab. On these devices, Safari displays the interface in dark mode when in private browsing mode.

In Safari on Mac, you can also go to the File menu and select "New Private Window." This method is useful if you prefer menu navigation over keyboard shortcuts. Safari clearly indicates private browsing with visual changes to the interface and displays "Private" text in the address bar area.

Both Edge and Safari offer the option to right-click links and open them directly in private mode. Additionally, you can configure these browsers to use private browsing by default through their settings, though this is less common than in Firefox.

Edge provides some additional privacy features beyond basic InPrivate mode, such as tracking prevention levels that you can adjust in settings. Safari includes similar privacy features like Intelligent Tracking Prevention, which limits how websites track your activity even in regular browsing mode.

Practical Takeaway: For Microsoft Edge, use Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Command+Shift+N on Mac. For Safari on Mac, use Command+Shift+N. On iPhone or iPad, tap the Tabs icon and select "Private" to open a private tab.

Incognito mode does hide your browsing history from appearing in your browser's history file. It prevents cookies from being saved to your computer. It also stops your browser from saving information like usernames, passwords, and form data. If you shop online in an incognito tab, your browser will not remember your address or payment information. This information stays only for your current session and disappears when you close the tab.

However, incognito mode does not hide your activity from your internet service provider
