How To Measure Your Chainsaw Chain

Understanding Chainsaw Chain Basics

A chainsaw chain is the cutting component that rotates around the guide bar at high speeds. Proper measurement of your chain is essential for safe operation and effective cutting. The chain consists of three main types of links: cutting teeth (the sharp parts that do the work), drive links (the thicker sections that fit into the guide bar's groove), and connecting links (which hold everything together).

Chainsaw chains come in different sizes, and using the wrong size for your specific saw creates serious safety hazards and reduces cutting efficiency. A chain that's too loose can slip off the guide bar during operation, potentially causing injury or damage to your equipment. A chain that's too tight creates excessive friction, overheats the motor, wears out components faster, and can break during use.

The pitch of a chainsaw chain refers to the distance between the drive links. Common pitches include 0.325 inches, 0.375 inches, and 0.404 inches. Pitch is one of the most critical measurements you need to know about your chain because it must match your specific chainsaw model. Using a chain with incorrect pitch won't fit properly on your guide bar and won't function at all.

The gauge (or thickness) of the chain refers to how thick the drive links are. Standard gauges are 0.043 inches, 0.050 inches, 0.058 inches, and 0.063 inches. Your chainsaw's guide bar has a groove cut into it with a specific width. If your chain's gauge doesn't match your guide bar's groove width, the chain won't track properly and could derail during cutting.

The number of drive links tells you the total length of the chain. A chain might have 52 drive links, 56 drive links, or 60 drive links, depending on the guide bar length it's designed to fit. Longer chains work with longer guide bars, and shorter chains work with shorter guide bars. Mismatching these creates dangerous situations where the chain can't maintain proper tension.

Takeaway: Before measuring anything, locate your chainsaw's model number (usually found on the body near the engine) and consult your owner's manual or manufacturer's website. Write down the pitch, gauge, and drive link count specified for your model. This information becomes your reference point for all other measurements.

Finding Your Chainsaw's Specifications

The most reliable way to measure your chain correctly starts by identifying what your chainsaw manufacturer recommends. Your owner's manual contains the exact chain specifications for your saw. If you no longer have the manual, you can typically find it online by searching for your chainsaw's brand and model number. Most manufacturers post PDF manuals on their websites at no cost.

The model number appears in different locations depending on your chainsaw brand. On Stihl saws, look on the fuel tank or the plastic housing near the engine. Husqvarna saws typically have the model number on a decal near the handle or fuel tank. Echo and other brands vary, but check the main body of the saw where warning labels are printed. Once you find the model number, write it down clearly. You'll reference it multiple times.

Your chainsaw's guide bar also provides measurement information. Etched or printed on the bar itself, you'll find markings indicating the bar length (measured in inches) and often the pitch and gauge specifications. A typical marking might read ".325 .058 52" meaning the chain has a 0.325-inch pitch, 0.058-inch gauge, and 52 drive links.

If your guide bar markings are worn or illegible, you can measure the bar length yourself. Measure from the tip of the bar to where it enters the chainsaw's body. A guide bar that measures 14 inches typically uses a 52-link chain, while an 18-inch bar typically uses a 56-link or 60-link chain, depending on pitch. These are general guidelines; your manual will confirm the exact specification.

Some chainsaws can accept chains in multiple sizes. A saw with an 18-inch bar might accept both 56-link and 60-link chains with the correct pitch and gauge. This flexibility allows for chain replacement options, but you must still match the pitch and gauge exactly. Never assume one measurement works for all positions on your equipment.

Takeaway: Create a simple reference card with your chainsaw's model number and bar specifications. Keep this with your equipment or take a photo of it with your phone. This eliminates guesswork when purchasing replacement chains or troubleshooting problems.

Measuring Chain Pitch Accurately

Pitch is the distance between three consecutive rivets (the metal pins that hold the chain together). To measure pitch, place the chain on a flat surface and use a ruler or measuring tape. Measure from the center of one rivet to the center of the third rivet, then divide by two. This gives you the pitch measurement. For example, if the distance between the first and third rivet centers is 0.650 inches, the pitch is 0.325 inches (0.650 divided by 2).

A more straightforward approach involves purchasing a chainsaw chain pitch gauge, a small metal tool specifically designed for this measurement. These gauges cost between $5 and $15 and feature notches cut to standard pitch sizes. Simply slide your chain into the appropriate notches until one fits perfectly without forcing it. This tool removes guesswork and provides accurate results quickly. Hardware stores, farm supply stores, and online retailers stock these gauges regularly.

The three most common pitches you'll encounter are 0.325 inches, 0.375 inches, and 0.404 inches. Smaller chainsaws (under 35 cubic centimeters) typically use 0.325-inch pitch chains because the smaller teeth reduce vibration and make the saw easier to control. Medium and larger saws use 0.375-inch or 0.404-inch pitch chains, which cut faster and handle heavier work.

Measuring pitch without the correct tools introduces error. Using a standard ruler and eyeballing the measurement often results in mistakes because the rivet centers are small and difficult to pinpoint precisely. If you can't access a pitch gauge, bring your chain to a chainsaw dealer or hardware store where staff can measure it for you. This service is typically provided at no cost.

Never estimate pitch or assume all chains of the same brand are identical. Even within one manufacturer's lineup, different models use different pitches. A 0.325-inch pitch chain will not work on a saw designed for 0.375-inch pitch, even though both might fit on the guide bar temporarily. During operation, improper pitch causes the chain to bind, jump, or derail.

Takeaway: If measuring pitch yourself, perform the measurement at least twice using the center-to-center rivet method to confirm accuracy. If results differ, use a pitch gauge or consult a professional before purchasing a replacement chain.

Checking Chain Gauge and Drive Link Thickness

The gauge (thickness) of your chain refers to how deep the drive links sit in your guide bar's groove. Your guide bar has a channel carved along its length with a specific width. The drive links of your chain must fit this groove precisely. If the gauge is too thin, the chain wobbles side to side. If too thick, the chain won't fit at all.

To measure gauge, you need a caliper tool, which measures thickness in small increments. A digital caliper (costing $10 to $25) provides accurate readings. Place the caliper over a drive link (the thick part of the chain) and measure its thickness. Common gauges measure 0.043 inches (sometimes called .043), 0.050 inches (.050), 0.058 inches (.058), and 0.063 inches (.063). Most residential and light-duty chainsaws use 0.050-inch or 0.058-inch gauge chains.

If you don't own a caliper, visit a chainsaw dealer with your chain or guide bar. Dealers possess gauge measurement tools and can identify your chain's specifications within minutes. This approach eliminates the need to purchase specialized equipment if you measure your chain only occasionally.

Another method involves examining your guide bar's groove width. If your bar markings include the gauge specification (often printed as ".050" or ".058"), you've found the information without measurement. Match this number when purchasing a replacement chain.
