How To Make A Fleece Tie Blanket

What Is a Fleece Tie Blanket and Why Make One?

A fleece tie blanket is a cozy, handmade blanket created by layering two pieces of fleece fabric and tying the edges together with strips of fabric. Unlike traditional quilts or sewn blankets, fleece tie blankets require no sewing machine and minimal sewing skills. The finished product is soft, warm, and durable—perfect for snuggling on the couch, keeping warm while camping, or giving as a gift.

Fleece tie blankets have grown in popularity over the past 15 years, particularly among people looking for quick craft projects. According to craft supply retailers, fleece tie blankets are among the top five most requested beginner sewing projects. The appeal comes from several factors: the project takes between 2 to 4 hours to complete, uses affordable materials (typically $15 to $35 depending on fabric choice), and produces a professional-looking result without advanced skills.

The blankets are versatile in size and style. Most people make blankets ranging from small lap-sized (36 by 48 inches) to large bed-sized (60 by 80 inches). You can customize colors, patterns, and textures by choosing different fleece prints and solids. Some people make multiple blankets as gifts for family members, weddings, or baby showers.

Making a fleece tie blanket offers practical benefits beyond the finished product. The hands-on process is relaxing and meditative for many crafters. Parents often involve children aged 8 and up in the project, making it an educational activity that teaches basic textile skills. The final blanket typically lasts 5 to 10 years with regular washing, making it a worthwhile time investment.

Practical takeaway: Fleece tie blankets represent an accessible entry point into textile crafting. They require minimal equipment, produce fast results, and create genuinely useful items you or others will enjoy.

Gathering Materials and Tools

Creating a fleece tie blanket requires surprisingly few materials. The core supplies are two pieces of fleece fabric, thread, and basic cutting tools. Most of these items are available at fabric stores, craft retailers, or online marketplaces. A complete project typically costs between $15 and $35, though this varies based on fabric quality and where you purchase materials.

The primary material is fleece fabric itself. Fleece is a synthetic textile made from polyester, prized for its softness, warmth, and ease of care. When selecting fleece, look for anti-pill varieties, which resist the formation of small fabric balls that appear on lower-quality fleece after washing. Standard fleece weights range from 200 to 350 grams per square meter. For blankets, 280 to 300 grams provides good balance between warmth and weight. You'll need two pieces of fleece of equal size—for a 50-by-60-inch blanket, you'd purchase two pieces measuring at least 50 by 60 inches.

Many crafters choose complementary fleece patterns for the two sides. Common combinations include a patterned front with a solid-colored back, or two different patterns that coordinate visually. Fleece comes in hundreds of designs—from abstract patterns to character prints, seasonal themes, and solid colors. Pricing typically ranges from $5 to $12 per yard, depending on whether you purchase basic solids or licensed character prints.

Essential tools for this project include:

• Rotary cutter and cutting mat (or sharp scissors as an alternative)
• Ruler or measuring tape (at least 36 inches long)
• Thread—any color that matches or blends with your fleece
• Sewing needle or needle for hand-stitching
• Pins to hold fabric pieces together
• Scissors for trimming thread and fabric strips

A rotary cutter makes cutting fabric strips faster and more uniform, but quality scissors work adequately. Many people already own these basic tools, which reduces project costs significantly. If you don't own a cutting mat, you can use a piece of cardboard or even cut on a smooth tabletop with careful attention to protecting the surface underneath.

Practical takeaway: Gather your materials before starting. A 50-by-60-inch blanket needs two matching-sized fleece pieces plus basic sewing supplies, totaling around $20 to $30 for quality materials.

Preparing Your Fleece and Measuring Properly

Proper measurement and preparation determine whether your finished blanket looks polished and lies flat. This step takes 15 to 30 minutes but prevents frustrating mistakes later. Start by laying both pieces of fleece on a clean, flat surface like a large table or cutting mat, stacked with right sides facing outward (the pretty sides facing up).

Trim both pieces to identical dimensions. Even if you bought fabric cut to size, double-check the measurements with a ruler along all four sides. Slight variations in commercial cutting mean one piece may be slightly larger. Use a rotary cutter and ruler to trim both pieces to exact measurements. For example, if one piece measures 50.5 by 60.25 inches and the other is 50 by 60 inches, trim both down to 50 by 60 inches exactly. This precision ensures your tie knots sit evenly around all edges.

Next, mark where your ties will go. Ties are typically placed every 4 to 6 inches around all four edges of the blanket. On a 50-by-60-inch blanket with 4-inch spacing, you'll have approximately 40 to 50 ties total. Use a fabric pencil or chalk to mark positions. Create a simple diagram on paper first—mark a rectangle and add dots every 4 inches. This gives you a visual reference as you mark the actual fabric.

For marking, place your ruler along one edge and make small marks (or use pins) every 4 to 6 inches. Repeat along all four edges. At the corners, you can place a tie either directly at the corner or skip the corner and start the pattern 2 inches from it. Both approaches work well—choose based on visual preference.

Before proceeding to cutting, verify your fabric layers are perfectly aligned. Stack the fleece pieces exactly on top of each other, right sides out. Some crafters use T-pins to hold them together at several points. This prevents shifting while you mark and cut.

Practical takeaway: Measure twice before cutting. Mark tie positions every 4 to 6 inches along all edges using a fabric pencil or pins. This precision step takes 20 minutes but ensures a professional-looking final product.

Cutting Fabric Strips and Creating Ties

Cutting the fringe—the fabric strips that become ties—is the most time-consuming part of the project but requires only basic motor skills. This step typically takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on blanket size and your comfort with cutting tools. The goal is creating 3-inch-wide strips of fabric around the entire perimeter of your blanket.

Start at one corner. Using your rotary cutter or sharp scissors, make a cut 3 inches deep from the edge of the blanket toward the center, positioning it at your first marked tie location. The cut should run perpendicular to the edge of the blanket. Stop the cut 3 inches from the edge—you're not cutting all the way through. If you cut too deeply into the blanket, the ties will come loose during washing.

After making the initial cut, make a parallel cut about 3 inches to the right of the first cut. Then, connect these two cuts by making a horizontal cut that runs along the edge of the blanket between them. This creates an H-shaped fringe piece still attached to the blanket at the center. Repeat this pattern around all four edges of the blanket, following your marked positions.

Some crafters find it easier to cut all strips in one direction first (say, along the top edge), then rotate the blanket and repeat on the remaining sides. Others prefer working around the entire blanket continuously. Both methods produce identical results—choose based on what feels natural to you.

As you cut, you'll create two separate layers of fr
