How to Hard Reset Your Onn Tablet Guide

Understanding What a Hard Reset Does to Your Onn Tablet

A hard reset, also called a factory reset, returns your Onn tablet to the same condition it had when it first left the factory. This process erases all personal data, installed applications, photos, videos, documents, and any customized settings you've created. Think of it like restoring a tablet to its original state before you ever turned it on.

Onn tablets are affordable Android devices sold primarily through Walmart, with models ranging from 7-inch screens to larger 10-inch displays. They typically cost between $50 and $200 depending on the screen size and storage capacity. Because these tablets are budget-friendly, many people use them for basic tasks like web browsing, streaming videos, checking email, and reading. Over time, they may accumulate digital clutter or develop performance issues that a hard reset can address.

When you perform a hard reset on your Onn tablet, the operating system remains the same version, but all your personal information disappears. This includes login credentials for email accounts, social media applications, banking apps, and any stored passwords. Your tablet will essentially be blank, requiring you to set it up again as if you purchased it brand new.

Common reasons people hard reset their Onn tablets include removing malware or viruses, fixing freezing or crashing applications, clearing storage space when the device runs slowly, removing personal data before selling or gifting the tablet, or troubleshooting persistent software problems. According to Android support documentation, a hard reset can resolve up to 70 percent of common software-related issues that don't stem from hardware damage.

Practical Takeaway: Before performing a hard reset, understand that you will lose everything on your tablet. Back up any important files, photos, or documents to a cloud service or computer first.

Preparing Your Onn Tablet Before Hard Reset

Preparation is the most important step before hard resetting your Onn tablet. Without proper preparation, you risk permanently losing files and data that you may need in the future. Preparation typically takes 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how much data you have stored on your device.

Start by backing up your photos and videos. Connect your Onn tablet to a computer using a USB cable, or use a cloud storage service like Google Photos, OneDrive, or Dropbox. Google Photos offers unlimited storage for photos in "Storage Saver" quality at no cost. OneDrive provides 5GB of free storage with a Microsoft account. Many people store thousands of photos across multiple cloud services, so choose the option that works best for you.

Next, back up important documents, spreadsheets, and files. If you use Google Drive, your files may already sync to the cloud automatically. Check your tablet's file manager to see what documents you've saved locally. You can export these files to Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, or email them to yourself. Taking screenshots of important information, such as subscription confirmation numbers or account details, provides an extra layer of backup.

Document your login information before resetting. Write down or safely store the usernames and passwords for your email accounts, banking apps, streaming services, and social media accounts. You'll need this information to sign back in after the reset. Consider using a password manager like Bitwarden (free) or LastPass to store this information securely.

Check which applications you have installed. Take screenshots of your home screen and app drawer so you remember which applications you had and can reinstall them if needed. Make a list of paid apps you've purchased, as you may need to reinstall them from your purchase history in the Google Play Store.

Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist of what needs backing up: photos, videos, documents, login credentials, and app lists. Complete this checklist before proceeding with the hard reset.

Step-by-Step Hard Reset Process for Onn Tablets

The hard reset process on Onn tablets running Android involves navigating through the Settings menu to find the factory reset option. The exact steps may vary slightly depending on which Android version your tablet runs, but the general process remains similar across most Onn models released between 2015 and 2024.

Begin by ensuring your tablet has at least 50 percent battery remaining. A hard reset that gets interrupted by a dead battery can cause serious problems. If your battery is low, plug the tablet into a charger and wait until it reaches at least 50 percent capacity. This precaution takes only 15 to 30 minutes on most chargers.

Open the Settings app, which typically appears as a gear icon on your home screen or in the app drawer. Look for an option labeled "System," "About Tablet," or "About Device." The exact name depends on your Android version. Tap this option. Then scroll down to find "Reset Options," "Reset," or "Erase All Data." Some tablets may label this as "Factory Data Reset" or "Factory Reset."

Tap the reset option. You may see a warning message explaining that all data will be erased. Read this message to confirm you're about to reset the correct device. The system will ask you to confirm by entering your Google account password or PIN. This security feature prevents accidental resets. Enter the required information.

The tablet will then display a final confirmation screen asking "Do you want to erase all data?" Select "Yes," "Confirm," or the equivalent option. The reset process begins immediately. Do not turn off your tablet or interrupt the process. The screen will show a progress bar and may display "Erasing..." or "Resetting..." messages. This typically takes 10 to 20 minutes.

Once the reset completes, your tablet automatically restarts. You'll see the initial setup screen, just like when the device was brand new. At this point, the hard reset is finished.

Practical Takeaway: Follow the steps slowly and confirm each action. If you're unsure at any step, refer to your tablet's documentation or manufacturer website for model-specific instructions.

Setting Up Your Onn Tablet After Hard Reset

After the hard reset completes, your Onn tablet displays the initial setup screen. This process, sometimes called "first-time setup" or "Welcome," takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete thoroughly. You'll need your Google account information (email and password), Wi-Fi network name and password, and any other login credentials you documented during preparation.

The setup wizard will guide you through several screens. First, you'll select your language and region. Then you'll connect to a Wi-Fi network by selecting your network name and entering the password. This connection is necessary because the tablet needs to download system updates and verify your Google account.

Next, you'll sign in with your Google account. This is the email address and password associated with your Google Play Store. Using your primary Google account means you'll have access to your previous app purchases and your Google Drive files. If you used a secondary Google account before the reset, you can sign in with that account instead or create a new one.

The tablet will then offer to restore your backed-up data. If you had apps and data backed up to Google before the reset, you'll see an option to restore them. Review this list and select which apps you want to reinstall. You can choose to restore all apps or select specific ones. This process takes several minutes as the tablet downloads and installs each application.

After backup restoration, you'll set up additional options like screen lock security (PIN, pattern, or fingerprint), notification settings, and privacy preferences. These steps are optional but recommended for security purposes. Finally, you'll be taken to the home screen, and your tablet is ready to use.

Reinstall any paid apps that didn't restore automatically by opening Google Play Store and navigating to "My Apps & Games." Under the "Library" tab, you'll see all apps you've purchased. Simply tap the cloud icon next to each app to reinstall it.

Practical Takeaway: Have your Google account password and Wi-Fi password nearby when setting up your tablet. Keep the setup wizard running until completion to avoid leaving your tablet in an incomplete state.
