How to Forward Calls on Your Phone Guide

Understanding Call Forwarding: What It Is and How It Works

Call forwarding is a telephone feature that redirects incoming calls from your phone number to another phone number of your choice. Instead of ringing on your primary phone, calls can be sent to a secondary device, a different location, or another person altogether. This feature has existed in various forms for decades, evolving from landline systems to today's mobile and internet-based phones.

The basic mechanics are straightforward. When someone calls your number, your phone service provider's system intercepts that call before it reaches your device. Based on the forwarding settings you've configured, the system routes the call to your alternate number instead. The caller typically hears the phone ring on their end as usual, though they may notice a slight delay as the call is redirected. From the caller's perspective, nothing appears different—they still dial your original number.

Call forwarding works differently depending on your phone type. Mobile phones use cellular networks and your service provider's switching systems. Landlines route calls through traditional telephone infrastructure. Internet-based calling services (VoIP) use servers and internet protocols. Despite these technical differences, the end result is similar: your incoming calls reach wherever you've directed them.

Modern phones support multiple forwarding scenarios. You can set calls to forward when your phone is busy, when you don't answer within a certain number of rings, or all the time. Some systems allow conditional forwarding, meaning different numbers forward based on different conditions. Understanding these options helps you choose the right setup for your situation.

Practical takeaway: Call forwarding redirects your incoming calls to another number that you control. This works across most phone types—mobile, landline, and VoIP—though the setup process varies slightly between them.

Call Forwarding on Mobile Phones: iPhone and Android

Mobile phones offer call forwarding options built into their operating systems. Both iPhone and Android devices allow you to redirect calls through your phone's settings without needing additional apps or services. The process is generally quick and takes just a few minutes to configure.

For iPhone users, call forwarding is found in the Phone app settings. Open your Phone app, go to the keypad or dial screen, and look for the settings icon. From there, navigate to "Settings" and select "Phone." Within the Phone menu, you'll find "Call Forwarding." Toggle it on and enter the phone number where you want calls directed. You can also set it to forward only when your phone is busy or after a certain number of rings don't go unanswered. Some carriers offer variations in these options, so your specific choices may differ slightly depending on your service provider.

Android devices follow a similar pattern but with variations depending on the manufacturer and your carrier. The general path is: Settings > Phone > Call Settings > Call Forwarding (or Call Diversion). Enter the number to which you want calls forwarded. Android phones often provide options like "Forward when busy," "Forward when unanswered," and "Forward when unreachable." You can activate one or all of these conditions depending on your needs. Some Android versions may label these options differently, so check your specific phone's manual if you have trouble locating them.

Important considerations when setting up mobile call forwarding: Make sure the number you enter includes the full phone number with area code, and in some cases, the country code if forwarding internationally. Double-check the number to avoid routing calls incorrectly. Your carrier may charge for forwarding calls to certain numbers, particularly long-distance or international numbers, so review your plan details. Once activated, remember that calls will go to your alternate number even if your primary phone is on and nearby.

Practical takeaway: Both iPhone and Android phones have built-in call forwarding in their Phone settings. Access it through Settings > Phone > Call Forwarding, enter your alternate number, and choose which conditions trigger the forwarding.

Setting Up Call Forwarding on Landline Phones

Landline call forwarding works through your telephone service provider's switching system rather than through your phone itself. The setup process differs from mobile phones because landlines don't have an operating system with a settings menu. Instead, you use either a keypad code or contact your provider directly.

The most common method uses a special code dialed from your landline. This code activates forwarding through your provider's system. A typical code sequence is: dial *72 (or sometimes #72), then enter the number where you want calls forwarded, then press #. Once you hear a confirmation tone or message, the forwarding is active. To deactivate it, the common code is *73 (or #73) followed by #. These codes may vary depending on your carrier and region, so confirm the exact codes with your service provider before trying them.

If the keypad codes don't work or you prefer not to use them, contact your telephone service provider directly. Customer service representatives can set up call forwarding for you over the phone. They'll ask for the number to which you want calls forwarded and confirm the type of forwarding you want—always on, when busy, or when unanswered. Some providers charge a small monthly fee for this feature, while others include it in your regular service plan.

Landline forwarding considerations: Confirm whether your provider charges for this feature. Some landline providers limit where you can forward calls, particularly international numbers. Test the forwarding by having someone call your landline number to ensure calls reach your alternate number correctly. Remember that with landline forwarding, your original phone won't ring—calls go directly to your alternate number. If you want to cancel forwarding, use the deactivation code or contact your provider.

Practical takeaway: Landline call forwarding uses codes like *72 followed by your alternate number and #, or you can contact your provider directly. Confirm the correct codes for your carrier and any associated fees before setting it up.

VoIP and Internet-Based Call Forwarding Options

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services like Skype, Google Voice, and various business phone systems handle call forwarding through online portals or dedicated apps rather than through your phone's native settings. These services offer flexible forwarding options because they operate independently of traditional phone carriers.

Google Voice provides one of the most straightforward VoIP forwarding experiences. Log into your Google Voice account on a computer or through the Google Voice app. Go to "Settings" and select "Forwarding and voicemail." You can then add up to five phone numbers where calls to your Google Voice number should ring. Check the boxes next to the numbers you want active, and they'll all ring simultaneously when someone calls your Google Voice number. You can also set specific call forwarding rules based on contacts or groups—for example, forwarding calls from your boss to your work phone while forwarding calls from friends to your personal cell.

Skype offers similar forwarding capabilities through its "Call Settings" menu. After setting up your Skype account, you can forward calls to your linked phone numbers. The process involves adding phone numbers to your account and then choosing which ones ring when someone calls your Skype name or assigned Skype phone number. Skype also allows you to record how many seconds ring on your forwarded numbers before the call goes to voicemail.

Business VoIP systems often provide the most sophisticated forwarding options. Platforms like Zoom Phone, RingCentral, or your company's dedicated phone system typically have admin panels where you can configure forwarding rules, call queues, and conditional routing based on time of day, caller ID, or department. These systems often integrate with calendar apps, so forwarding can automatically change based on whether you've marked yourself as busy or out of office.

VoIP forwarding advantages include the ability to forward to multiple numbers simultaneously, set up complex rules based on caller information, and change settings from any internet-connected device. The main limitation is that you need an active internet connection for the VoIP service to function—if the service or your internet goes down, forwarding won't work.

Practical takeaway: VoIP services use online portals and apps to manage call forwarding rather than phone codes. Log into your VoIP account's settings, add your alternate phone numbers, and select which should ring when calls come in.

Advanced Forwarding Scenarios and Conditional Routing

Beyond basic call forwarding, many phone systems support advanced scenarios where different numbers forward based on different conditions. These options let you customize how calls route depending on circumstances like time of day, whether your phone is busy, or who is calling.
