How to Find Your Selective Service Number

Understanding What a Selective Service Number Is

A Selective Service Number is a unique nine-digit identifier assigned to you by the federal Selective Service System. This number becomes part of your permanent record once you register with Selective Service. The number serves as your official reference point in the Selective Service database, similar to how a Social Security number works for tax purposes or a driver's license number works for driving records.

The Selective Service System is an agency within the executive branch of the U.S. government that maintains a database of millions of American men and some women. As of 2024, approximately 218 million people are registered with Selective Service. The organization was created to maintain a database of individuals who could be mobilized if the nation faced a national emergency requiring a draft. The last military draft occurred in 1973, but the system remains active and maintains current registration information.

Your Selective Service Number is distinct from your Social Security Number and serves only to identify you within the Selective Service System. When you register with Selective Service, the agency creates a file containing your name, date of birth, Social Security Number, address, and citizenship status. Your assigned Selective Service Number becomes the key identifier linking you to this file. This number appears on registration confirmation documents and is used if you ever need to update your information with Selective Service.

Understanding what this number represents is important because it connects to various aspects of your life. For example, federal student financial aid forms require Selective Service registration status information from male registrants. Additionally, some states tie driver's license renewals and certain professional licenses to Selective Service registration status. Knowing your Selective Service Number helps you navigate these connections and maintain accurate records.

Practical Takeaway: Your Selective Service Number is a unique identifier assigned when you register with the federal Selective Service System. It remains part of your official record and may be referenced for student aid, licensing, and other purposes. Keeping this number accessible is useful for updating your registration information or responding to official inquiries.

Who Is Required to Register With Selective Service

Registration requirements differ based on gender and citizenship status. As of 2024, all men ages 18 through 25 who are U.S. citizens or immigrants living in the United States with permission must register with Selective Service within 30 days of turning 18. This includes men with green cards, refugees, asylees, and others lawfully present. The registration requirement applies regardless of immigration status if you reside in the U.S., with limited exceptions for active-duty military members and certain others.

Women can register with Selective Service on a voluntary basis as of 2023, though registration is not currently required for women by federal law. A small but increasing number of women have registered voluntarily. The registration process for voluntary registrants is identical to the mandatory process for men.

Certain individuals are exempt from registration requirements. Active-duty military members do not need to register separately, as their military status satisfies the requirement. Non-immigrant foreign nationals—people in the U.S. on student visas, work visas, or tourist visas—are generally not required to register. Additionally, individuals hospitalized or institutionalized for mental illness may have exemptions, though this requires official documentation and verification by Selective Service.

Transgender men and women should understand how registration applies to them. The Selective Service System currently bases registration requirements on the sex listed on your birth certificate or other official identity documents. Transgender men assigned female at birth are not currently required to register. Transgender women assigned male at birth are required to register if they meet age and residency requirements, though some states allow gender marker changes on official documents that may affect how registration is processed.

Failing to register can have significant consequences. Men who do not register within the required timeframe lose eligibility for federal student financial aid, federal job training, and federal employment. Additionally, some states withhold driver's licenses or professional licenses from non-registrants. However, registration is free and can be completed in minutes through multiple methods.

Practical Takeaway: Most men ages 18-25 living in the U.S. must register within 30 days of turning 18. Women may register voluntarily. Understanding whether you fall within registration requirements helps you meet deadlines and maintain eligibility for federal programs and state services.

Methods to Locate Your Selective Service Number

If you already registered with Selective Service and received a confirmation, your Selective Service Number appears on several official documents. Check your registration confirmation letter, which is the most common place this number is listed. This document was typically mailed to your address after you completed registration and contains your nine-digit number prominently displayed. If you still have this original letter, finding your number takes only moments. If the letter was misplaced, other documentation may contain it as well.

Many people discover their number on state identification documents. Some states print Selective Service registration confirmation on the back of driver's licenses or identification cards for male registrants. Check the back of your current driver's license or state ID card—if you registered with Selective Service and your state participates in this practice, your number may appear there. This is particularly common in states with integrated license and registration systems. Not all states display this information on IDs, so its absence does not indicate a registration problem.

Federal student aid documents may contain your Selective Service Number if you registered before applying for aid. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) requires certification of Selective Service registration status. If you submitted a FAFSA after registering, your Selective Service records may be linked to your federal student aid file. Reviewing past FAFSA submissions or financial aid documents may reveal your number.

The official Selective Service website provides a tool to retrieve your number. Visit www.sss.gov and look for the "Find Your Selective Service Number" option. This tool requires you to provide personal information such as your name, date of birth, and Social Security Number to verify your identity and retrieve your registered number. The search may take a few minutes to process. This method works only if you previously registered and your information is in the Selective Service database.

If you cannot locate your number through these methods, contacting Selective Service directly provides another option. Call the Selective Service National Customer Service Center at 1-888-655-1825 or visit a local Selective Service office. They can confirm whether you are registered and provide your assigned number. Have your Social Security Number and date of birth ready when contacting them.

Practical Takeaway: Your Selective Service Number appears on your original registration confirmation letter, possibly on your driver's license, and in federal student aid records. If these sources are unavailable, the Selective Service website search tool or a direct call to Selective Service can retrieve your number using your personal identifying information.

What to Do If You Cannot Find Your Number

If you have searched available documents and cannot locate your Selective Service Number, your first step should be verifying whether you are actually registered. Not everyone who believes they registered actually completed the process correctly. To verify registration status, visit www.sss.gov and select the registration status verification tool. Enter your personal information, including your name, date of birth, and Social Security Number. The system will indicate whether a valid registration record exists under your name. This verification typically takes only a few minutes and provides clear confirmation of your status.

If the verification shows that you are registered but you still cannot find your assigned number, the Selective Service website search tool should retrieve it. The search tool is separate from the verification tool and specifically returns your nine-digit number if registration records exist. Input your information carefully, as incorrect details may prevent the system from locating your record. If the online search does not return a result after multiple attempts, contact Selective Service directly by phone or mail.

Contacting Selective Service by phone is often the fastest method for obtaining your number when online tools do not work. Call 1-888-655-1825 and speak with a customer service representative. Have your Social Security Number, date of birth, and current mailing address ready. The representative can search the database, verify your registration, and provide your Selective Service Number over the phone. Processing typically takes minutes, though wait times may vary depending on call volume. The Selective Service customer service line operates Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central Time, excluding federal holidays.
