How to Find Your Forgotten Hotspot Password

Understanding Your Hotspot and Password Storage

A mobile hotspot is a feature that turns your smartphone or tablet into a wireless router, allowing other devices to connect to the internet through your phone's cellular data connection. When you first set up a hotspot on your device, you create a password—also called a passphrase or network key—that protects your connection from unauthorized users. This password is typically between 8 and 20 characters and combines letters, numbers, and sometimes special characters.

Your device stores this password in its system settings, usually in an encrypted format. Unlike passwords you type regularly (like email or social media), hotspot passwords often get forgotten because most people set them once and rarely need to enter them again. Your phone remembers the password automatically, so you may go months or even years without typing it.

Different device types store and retrieve hotspot passwords in different ways. Android phones keep this information in the hotspot settings menu, while iPhones and iPads store it in their Personal Hotspot section. Windows and Mac computers have their own systems for managing hotspot passwords. Even though the location differs by device, the basic principle remains the same: your device has your password stored and can show it to you if you know where to look.

Understanding where and how your device keeps this information is the first step toward recovery. Most people are surprised to learn that finding a forgotten hotspot password takes only a few minutes—you don't need technical skills or special tools.

Practical Takeaway: Before attempting password recovery, identify which type of device created your hotspot. The steps differ significantly between Android, iPhone, Windows, and Mac devices, so knowing your device type will point you toward the correct method.

How to Find Your Hotspot Password on Android Devices

Android devices make it relatively straightforward to view your hotspot password once you know where to look. The process varies slightly depending on which version of Android your phone runs and which manufacturer made your phone, but the general path remains consistent across most modern Android devices.

Start by opening your phone's Settings app. Look for a menu option labeled "Network and Internet," "Connections," or simply "Wireless and Networks"—the exact wording depends on your Android version and phone manufacturer. Once you're in that section, look for "Hotspot," "Tethering," "Mobile Hotspot," or "Portable Hotspot." Tap on this option to access your hotspot settings.

Within the hotspot settings menu, you should see your network name (called the SSID) and a password field. On some Android versions, the password appears automatically when you open this menu. On others, you may need to tap on the password field or look for a "Show password" option—often represented by an eye icon. When you tap this, your password should display in readable text.

If your hotspot hasn't been activated yet, you may need to toggle it on first before the password becomes visible. Some Android phones store multiple saved passwords if you've changed your hotspot password multiple times. In these cases, you'll see the current active password, which is the one other devices need to connect.

For Samsung devices specifically, the path may be Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering > Mobile Hotspot > Manage Password. For Google Pixel phones, try Settings > Network and Internet > Hotspot and Tethering > Wi-Fi Hotspot > Manage Password. For other manufacturers like OnePlus, Motorola, or LG, the path will be similar but the exact wording of menu items may differ slightly.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your hotspot password once you locate it, and consider storing it in a password manager or a secure note on your device. This prevents you from having to search for it again in the future.

How to Find Your Hotspot Password on iPhone and iPad

Finding your forgotten hotspot password on an iPhone or iPad follows a different path than Android, but remains quite simple. Apple's approach to storing and displaying the Personal Hotspot password is straightforward once you know the location.

Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. From the main settings menu, tap "General." Within the General section, look for "About." Tap on "About," and you should see various information about your device, including the device name, storage capacity, and other details.

Unfortunately, Apple's design doesn't display the Personal Hotspot password in the About section or any other obvious settings menu. Unlike Android, you cannot view your Wi-Fi hotspot password directly within iPhone or iPad settings through a standard menu option. This is by design—Apple prioritizes security by not displaying passwords in plain text within settings.

However, there are alternative methods. If you've previously connected another Apple device (like a Mac, another iPhone, or an iPad) to your hotspot, you can view the password on that connected device. This works because Apple devices sometimes sync certain connection information across devices linked to the same iCloud account.

A more reliable approach is to reset your Personal Hotspot password entirely. Go to Settings > General > Reset, then tap "Reset Network Settings." This removes all saved Wi-Fi networks and resets your hotspot, but allows you to create a new password that you'll know. Be aware that this step also removes saved Wi-Fi networks from your device, so you may need to reconnect to Wi-Fi networks afterward.

Alternatively, you can change your hotspot name and password by going to Settings > General > About > Name, where you can edit your device name, and then Settings > Personal Hotspot > Wi-Fi Password to set a new password you'll remember.

Practical Takeaway: Since iPhone doesn't show existing passwords in settings, consider this an opportunity to set a new password you'll definitely remember. Using a combination of words and numbers that's meaningful to you (but not guessable by others) works better than random characters.

How to Find Your Hotspot Password on Windows Computers

If you created a hotspot on a Windows computer or laptop, you can recover your password through your computer's network settings, though the path depends on which version of Windows you're running.

For Windows 10 and Windows 11, start by clicking the Windows Start button and typing "Settings" into the search box. Open the Settings app. Navigate to "Network and Internet," then select "Mobile hotspot" from the left sidebar. This section shows whether mobile hotspot is currently available on your device (it's only available if your Windows device has cellular capability, which most laptops don't have unless they include a built-in cellular modem).

If your Windows computer doesn't have cellular capability, you may have created a Wi-Fi hotspot through a different method. In this case, you'd look at your Wi-Fi settings instead. However, Windows doesn't display previously created Wi-Fi hotspot passwords in plain text through the standard settings interface, similar to iPhone's limitation.

For Windows 10 specifically, there's an alternative method through the Network Connections settings. Click Start and type "View network connections" into the search box. If you've previously set up a hosted network (an older method of creating hotspots on Windows), you might see it listed here. You can right-click on a network connection and select Properties to view some information, though the password still won't display directly.

The most reliable method on Windows is to use the Command Prompt to view saved network information. Right-click the Start button and select "Windows Terminal (Admin)" or "Command Prompt (Admin)." Type the command: netsh wlan show hostednetwork setting=security. This displays the security settings for any hosted network you've created, including the password in plain text. Be cautious when using Command Prompt, as it requires administrator access and isn't as user-friendly as graphical settings menus.

If you can't locate your password through these methods, resetting it is straightforward: return to Settings > Network and Internet > Mobile hotspot, and look for an option to change your password. Create a new one and write it down immediately.

Practical Takeaway: Windows machines with cellular capability are relatively rare. If your Windows device lacks built-in cellular service, you may not have a recoverable hotspot password to find—you'd need to create one fresh if you want to set up hotspot functionality.
