How to Find and Manage Mac Passwords

Understanding Where Mac Passwords Are Stored

On a Mac computer, passwords exist in several different locations depending on what you're using them for. The primary storage location is the Keychain, which is Apple's built-in password management system. Keychain stores passwords for email accounts, websites, Wi-Fi networks, and applications. Think of it as a secure vault on your computer that remembers login information so you don't have to type it repeatedly.

When you enter a password in Safari, Mail, or other Apple applications, your Mac typically asks if you want to save it. If you click "Save Password," that information gets stored in Keychain. The system encrypts this data using your login password, meaning only you can access it when you're logged into your account.

Beyond Keychain, individual applications store passwords differently. Some programs like Chrome or Firefox maintain their own password managers with separate storage systems. Business software like Slack or Microsoft Office may store credentials in application-specific files. Email clients like Outlook keep login information in account settings. This means your passwords aren't all in one place—they're distributed across multiple systems depending on which applications you use.

Your Mac also stores passwords related to your Apple ID, which is used for iCloud, the App Store, and other Apple services. When you set up your Mac, you create a login password that protects your entire user account. This password is different from your Apple ID password and serves as the master key to accessing your computer.

Practical Takeaway: Passwords on a Mac are stored in different places. Keychain holds most browser and app passwords, while individual applications maintain their own storage. Your Mac login password and Apple ID password are stored separately and serve different functions.

Accessing Passwords Through Keychain Access

Keychain Access is the main tool for viewing and managing saved passwords on a Mac. To open it, use Spotlight search by pressing Command + Spacebar, then type "Keychain Access" and press Enter. The application opens to show various categories of stored information.

When Keychain Access opens, you'll see different tabs at the top. The "Passwords" category shows login credentials you've saved. Click on any entry to see what password is stored for that account. When you select a password entry, you'll see its details including the account name and website or service it's associated with. To actually view the password text itself, you need to check the box that says "Show password." Your Mac will ask you to confirm your identity by entering your login password or using Touch ID or Face ID if your Mac supports it.

The interface shows columns of information about each password entry. The "Account" column displays the username, the "Kind" column shows what type of credential it is (usually "Internet password"), and the "Where" column indicates which website or service it's for. You can sort by any of these columns by clicking the column headers, making it easier to find specific passwords if you have many saved.

Different categories exist within Keychain beyond just passwords. The "Passwords" category is most common, but you'll also see "Secure Notes" for saved text, "Certificates" for security files, and "Keys" for cryptographic information. Most people focus on the Passwords category when managing their login information.

If you want to search for a specific password, use the search box in the upper right corner of the Keychain Access window. Type a website name or username, and the list filters to show matching entries. This is particularly useful if you have many saved passwords and need to locate a specific one quickly.

Practical Takeaway: Open Keychain Access through Spotlight, navigate to the Passwords category, and click any entry to view details. To see the actual password text, check "Show password" and authenticate with your login credentials or biometric ID.

Viewing Saved Passwords in Safari and Other Browsers

Safari, which comes with every Mac, has its own password viewing system integrated with Keychain. To see saved passwords in Safari, open the browser and go to Safari menu → Preferences (or Settings on newer versions). Click the "Passwords" tab, and you'll see a list of all websites where you've saved login information. This list includes the website address and the associated username.

To view the actual password for any Safari entry, click on the website in the list, and a details panel appears. You'll see the username and a field for the password, but the password appears as dots or is hidden by default. Click the "Show" button next to the password field, and Safari will ask you to authenticate using your Mac login password, Touch ID, or Face ID. Once authenticated, the password displays in plain text.

Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and other third-party browsers store passwords differently from Safari. Chrome stores passwords in your Google account and syncs them across devices. To see them in Chrome, click the menu (three lines) → Settings → Autofill → Password Manager. You'll see all saved passwords, and clicking any entry shows the password after you authenticate. Firefox works similarly with its own password manager accessible through the menu → Settings → Privacy & Security → Passwords.

Each browser requires authentication before showing passwords as a security measure. This means even if someone gains access to your computer, they can't immediately see all your passwords without also knowing your login credentials or biometric information. However, if someone is logged into your Mac account, they can ultimately access all these passwords by authenticating.

Some browsers offer additional password management tools. Chrome includes the ability to export passwords, though this isn't recommended for security reasons. Firefox shows whether passwords have been involved in data breaches based on information from the Have I Been Pwned database. These tools provide extra information beyond just viewing the password itself.

Practical Takeaway: In Safari, go to Preferences → Passwords to see saved logins. Other browsers like Chrome and Firefox have similar features in their Settings under password or autofill sections. All require authentication before displaying passwords.

Managing and Organizing Saved Passwords

Once you understand where your passwords are stored, the next step is organizing and maintaining them. In Keychain Access, you can delete old or unused passwords by selecting an entry and pressing Delete or clicking the minus button at the bottom. This is useful when you change passwords or stop using certain accounts. Deleting a password from Keychain means your Mac won't automatically fill it in the future, but you can still log in manually if you remember the password.

You can add new passwords manually to Keychain if needed. Click the plus button in Keychain Access to create a new entry. You'll enter the keychain name, account name, and password, then choose which keychain to save it to. Most people use the "login" keychain, which is the default. This manual process isn't necessary for most users since passwords save automatically when you enter them in applications, but it's useful if you want to store login information for systems that don't support automatic saving.

Organizing passwords is more practical than trying to memorize them. The search function in Keychain Access helps locate passwords quickly. In browsers like Safari and Chrome, you can group passwords by using the search and filter features. Some people print a list of passwords and store it in a secure physical location, though this creates a security risk if the document is found or photographed.

Consider regularly reviewing which passwords you still need. You likely have saved passwords for accounts you no longer use—old email addresses, discontinued services, or apps you uninstalled. Deleting these reduces clutter and decreases the number of credentials that could be compromised if your Mac is breached. Focus on keeping passwords for accounts you currently use.

If you share your Mac with other users, each person has their own login account with separate Keychain storage. This means passwords saved under your account won't appear for other users unless they're logged into your account. Conversely, if you don't want someone using your computer to access your passwords, don't share your login credentials or leave your Mac unattended while logged in.

Practical Takeaway: Regularly review saved passwords and delete those for accounts you no longer use. Use search functions to locate specific passwords. Keep only current, active passwords to reduce security risk and maintain organization.

Security Practices for Managing Mac Passwords

Your Mac login password is the master key to accessing all stored passwords, making it critically important. Choose a login password that's difficult to guess—not your birthday, a pet's name, or your address. Strong passwords combine uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
