How to Edit Your Medical ID on iPhone

Understanding Medical ID on Your iPhone

Medical ID is a built-in feature on iPhones that stores important health information you want emergency responders to see quickly. This feature exists on iPhones running iOS 8 and later, making it available to millions of users worldwide. Unlike downloading a separate app, Medical ID integrates directly into your iPhone's Health app, which comes pre-installed on most devices.

When you set up Medical ID, you create a profile containing details like blood type, allergies, medications, emergency contacts, and medical conditions. In an emergency, first responders can access this information from your iPhone's lock screen without needing your passcode. This can be critical when you're unable to communicate your health status yourself.

The Medical ID feature works because it's designed to be visible even when your phone is locked. Emergency personnel are trained to look for this information on locked devices. According to Apple's documentation, Medical ID can be viewed from the lock screen by tapping "Emergency" and then selecting "Medical ID." This design prioritizes your safety during situations when time matters most.

Not all iPhone models store Medical ID in the same way, but the core functionality remains consistent across devices. Whether you have an iPhone 12, iPhone 14, or an older model, the process for editing Medical ID follows similar steps. Understanding where to find this feature on your specific device is the first step toward keeping your health information current.

Practical Takeaway: Locate the Health app on your home screen or by searching your device. This is where all Medical ID information lives and where you'll make any updates or changes to your health profile.

Accessing Medical ID Through the Health App

The Health app serves as the central hub for all your health and fitness information on iPhone. To edit your Medical ID, you need to open the Health app first. Look for the app with a white heart icon on a red background. If you can't find it on your home screen, swipe down to access the search function and type "Health" to locate it quickly.

Once you open the Health app, you'll see several tabs at the bottom of the screen. These typically include "Summary," "Browse," "Sharing," and "Profile." To edit Medical ID, tap on the "Profile" tab, which is usually located in the bottom right corner. Your Profile tab contains your personal health information and is where Medical ID settings are stored.

In the Profile section, you'll see your name at the top, followed by various options. Look for a section labeled "Medical ID" or sometimes listed under "Emergency Information." This section may appear near the top of your profile page. If you've never set up Medical ID before, you might see an option to "Create Medical ID" instead of "Edit Medical ID." Either way, tapping this option will open the Medical ID editing screen.

Some users report that the Medical ID option appears under a different menu depending on their iOS version. If you're running an older version of iOS, you might need to scroll down in your Profile to find the Medical ID section. iOS versions released after 2019 typically display Medical ID more prominently near the top of the Profile tab.

Practical Takeaway: Remember that all Medical ID edits happen in the Health app's Profile section, not in Settings. This is different from other iPhone features you might be familiar with, so bookmarking or noting this location can save you time when you need to update information.

Step-by-Step Editing Process for Your Medical ID

Once you've located Medical ID in the Health app's Profile section, editing your information follows a straightforward process. Tap "Edit" in the top right corner of the Medical ID screen. This allows you to modify any existing information or add new details to your profile. The editing interface presents different categories of information you can update.

The Medical ID form typically includes these sections: emergency contacts, medical conditions, allergies and reactions, medications and supplements, blood type, donor status, and notes. You don't need to fill in every section. Include only the information that's medically relevant or that you want emergency responders to know. For example, if you have no known allergies, you can leave that section blank rather than entering "none."

When entering medications, include both the name and dosage. Instead of just writing "Aspirin," write "Aspirin 81mg daily." This level of detail helps emergency responders understand your current medication regimen. Similarly, for allergies, specify the type of reaction if possible. Instead of "Penicillin," consider "Penicillin - causes severe rash." This information can prevent dangerous drug interactions during emergency treatment.

For emergency contacts, you can add multiple people. Include their relationship to you (such as "spouse," "parent," or "sibling") and their phone numbers. You can have up to five emergency contacts listed. Consider adding at least two people in case one is unreachable. Make sure you've informed these contacts that they're listed on your Medical ID so they expect emergency calls.

After making changes, tap "Done" or "Save" at the top of the screen. Your iPhone will confirm that your Medical ID has been updated. The changes take effect immediately, so your updated information is available to emergency responders as soon as you finish editing.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your information before editing so you don't forget important details, especially medication names and dosages. This prevents needing to look up information while you're in the editing interface.

Important Information to Include in Your Medical ID

Deciding what information to include in Medical ID depends on your individual health situation. The most universally useful information is your blood type, as emergency responders may need this within minutes of arrival. If you don't know your blood type, you can find this information on past medical records, from your doctor's office, or by requesting a blood test through your healthcare provider.

Allergies represent another critical category. List any drug allergies, food allergies, or environmental allergies that could impact emergency care. Severe allergies should definitely be included, even if they're not related to medications. For example, if you have a severe latex allergy, this could prevent emergency personnel from using latex gloves during treatment. Include not just the allergen but the reaction you experience, as this helps providers understand severity.

Current medications deserve careful attention in your Medical ID. Emergency responders need to know what you're taking because many medications interact dangerously with emergency medications. Include prescription medications, over-the-counter medications you take regularly, and supplements. Don't include medications you took in the past or take occasionally. However, if you take aspirin daily for heart health, that belongs in your Medical ID.

Significant medical conditions warrant inclusion. Conditions like diabetes, heart disease, epilepsy, or severe asthma should appear in your Medical ID because they directly affect emergency treatment decisions. Conditions like being a diabetic help emergency responders understand why you might be unconscious or confused. You don't need to list every health condition you've ever had, only those that could impact emergency care.

Your donor status indicates whether you want to donate organs or tissues. Some people include additional notes about their wishes, such as "Do Not Resuscitate" orders, though this information is also typically documented in legal documents. The Medical ID notes section provides space for any additional information emergency responders should know, such as "Uses hearing aids" or "Non-verbal; communicates via device."

Practical Takeaway: Review your Medical ID information quarterly, especially after doctor visits or medication changes. Set a phone reminder for every three months to check that your information remains current and accurate.

Ensuring Medical ID Is Visible on Your Lock Screen

Having Medical ID information stored on your phone means nothing if emergency responders can't find it. Your iPhone has a setting that controls whether Medical ID appears on your lock screen. To verify this setting is enabled, open the Health app and navigate to Profile. Select "Medical ID" and look for an option that says "Show When Locked" or "Show on Lock Screen." This toggle should be switched on (typically shown in green or blue).

When this setting is enabled, emergency responders can access your Medical ID by tapping "Emergency" on your lock screen, then selecting "Medical ID." This happens without needing your passcode or Face ID. The information displays in a readable format showing your key health details. This accessibility is intentional—your health information during emergencies takes priority over phone security.
