How to Connect a Universal Remote to Samsung

Understanding Universal Remotes and Samsung Compatibility

A universal remote is a device designed to control multiple electronics from different manufacturers using a single controller. Rather than juggling separate remotes for your television, soundbar, and streaming device, a universal remote can manage them all with one unit. Samsung televisions, like most modern electronics, use infrared (IR) technology or radio frequency (RF) signals to receive commands from remotes.

Universal remotes work by storing thousands of device codes in their memory. These codes correspond to specific commands—like power on/off, volume control, and channel changing—that different brands recognize. When you program a universal remote with your Samsung TV's code, you're essentially teaching the remote to speak the same language as your television.

Samsung remotes fall into several categories. Older Samsung TVs typically use infrared remotes that require a direct line of sight to the TV. Newer Samsung models, particularly those from 2018 onward, often include both infrared capability and RF technology, which works through walls and doesn't require direct pointing at the device. Some Samsung Smart TVs also support Bluetooth connectivity and SmartThings integration, which allows control through apps and other methods beyond traditional remote controls.

Universal remotes vary in sophistication. Basic models control only standard functions like power, volume, and channels. Mid-range options can navigate menus and access smart TV features. Premium universal remotes with touchscreens and programmable buttons offer extensive customization for homes with multiple devices.

Before attempting to connect any universal remote to your Samsung TV, check your television's model number—typically found on the back of the unit or in the settings menu under "About TV." This information helps you locate the correct device code needed for programming.

Practical Takeaway: Locate your Samsung TV's model number and determine whether it uses infrared or RF technology. This foundation helps you choose the right universal remote and programming method.

Gathering Information and Selecting the Right Universal Remote

Not all universal remotes work equally well with Samsung televisions. Some remotes are specifically marketed as Samsung-compatible, while others require manual code entry. Understanding which type suits your situation prevents frustration during setup.

Several reputable manufacturers produce universal remotes that work with Samsung TVs. Brands like Logitech Harmony, GE Universal, and RCA offer models across different price ranges. Logitech Harmony remotes are particularly popular because their associated software can search vast code databases and test codes automatically. GE Universal remotes often come with pre-programmed codes for major brands. RCA and other budget-friendly options typically require manual programming but function reliably once configured.

When selecting a universal remote, consider these factors:

• The age of your Samsung TV—older models may have different code requirements than newer Smart TVs
• The number and types of devices you want to control—whether you need just TV control or also soundbars, streaming boxes, and other equipment
• Whether you prefer buttons or touchscreen interface
• If you want learning functionality, which allows the remote to copy commands from your original Samsung remote
• Compatibility with smart home systems if you use SmartThings or other platforms

You'll need the specific device code for your Samsung model. This is a numeric code that tells the universal remote how to communicate with your particular television. Samsung device codes can be found in the instruction manual that came with your TV, on the Samsung support website, or in the code database of your universal remote's manufacturer.

Write down or photograph your TV's model number, the year it was purchased if known, and the type of universal remote you have. Keep this information accessible during programming, as you'll reference it multiple times.

Practical Takeaway: Research universal remotes compatible with Samsung and obtain your TV's model number and corresponding device code before purchasing or programming begins.

Programming a Universal Remote Using the Code Entry Method

The most common programming method for universal remotes involves entering your Samsung TV's device code. This straightforward process works on most universal remote models and typically takes five to ten minutes.

The code entry method begins by locating your remote's setup or programming mode. Different remotes trigger this mode differently—some require holding a specific button like "Setup" or "Mode," others have a dedicated button for programming. Consult your universal remote's instruction manual for the exact procedure, as the method varies by manufacturer and model.

Once you've entered programming mode, the remote typically enters a waiting state indicated by a light or on-screen display. This is when you enter your Samsung TV's device code using the number pad. Most universal remotes accept three or four-digit codes. You'll enter the numbers one at a time, and the remote stores each digit in sequence.

After entering the code, press the key that confirms entry—usually labeled "Enter," "OK," or "Power." The remote will transmit a test command to your Samsung TV. If programmed correctly, the TV will respond to this test command—often by turning off or displaying a brief message. If nothing happens, the code may be incorrect, requiring you to try alternative codes for your model.

Here's a typical code entry sequence:

• Press and hold the "Setup" button until the indicator light activates (approximately 3 seconds)
• The remote enters programming mode
• Using the number pad, enter your Samsung device code
• Press "Enter" or "OK" to confirm the code
• Point the remote at your TV and press "Power" to test
• If the TV responds, exit programming mode by pressing "Setup" again
• If the TV doesn't respond, repeat the process with an alternative device code

Samsung TVs often have multiple device codes available. If your first attempt doesn't work, try the next code listed for Samsung in your remote's code database. Most universal remotes include a code list in their instruction manual, though online databases maintained by manufacturers provide more comprehensive listings.

Practical Takeaway: Master your specific remote's code entry method by carefully reading its manual, then systematically enter Samsung device codes until the TV responds to the power button test.

Using Auto-Programming and Code Search Features

Many modern universal remotes include automatic programming features that eliminate manual code entry. These features scan through stored codes to locate the correct one for your Samsung TV without requiring you to know the specific device code beforehand.

The code search method works by having the remote automatically cycle through all stored codes for a particular brand. You point the remote at your TV and hold the power button. The remote transmits a code and pauses briefly to observe if the TV responds. If there's no response, it advances to the next code and repeats the process. This continues until the TV reacts to a transmitted command—typically by powering off—signaling that the correct code has been found.

To use the code search feature on most universal remotes:

• Select "Samsung" or "TV" as the device type you're programming
• Enter programming mode as specified in your remote's manual
• Initiate the code search function, usually by pressing a "Search" or "Find" button
• Point the remote at your Samsung TV
• Press and hold the "Power" button
• The remote will cycle through codes while you watch the TV
• When the TV powers off, release the power button immediately
• Press "Enter" or "OK" to confirm the discovered code

The code search method takes longer than manual entry—sometimes several minutes—but eliminates the need to locate your specific device code. This approach proves particularly useful if your TV's manual is unavailable or if Samsung's code database doesn't list your particular model.

Some universal remotes, particularly Logitech Harmony models, offer computer-based setup software that connects to online databases. This software searches for your exact TV model and can automatically detect compatible codes. You simply enter your TV model number into the software, and it identifies the correct code, which then transfers to your remote wirelessly or through a USB connection.
