How to Close Apps on Android Phones

Understanding How Android Apps Stay Running in the Background

When you use an app on your Android phone and then press the home button or switch to another app, that original app often continues running in the background. This is different from closing it completely. Android devices manage apps this way to help them load faster when you return to them and to maintain certain functions like notifications or music playback. Understanding this distinction helps you know when you actually need to close an app versus when it's fine to leave it running.

Your Android phone has limited resources, including processing power and battery capacity. When too many apps run simultaneously in the background, they consume these resources even when you're not actively using them. This can slow down your phone's overall performance, drain your battery more quickly, and use up your mobile data. Different Android devices handle background processes differently depending on their manufacturer and Android version, but the basic principle remains the same: fewer active apps generally means better performance.

Apps can run in different states while in the background. Some apps might be completely inactive but still taking up memory. Others might be actively syncing data, sending notifications, or playing audio. Certain apps have permission to keep running even when your screen is off, while others are restricted. For example, a music streaming app will typically continue playing audio in the background, while a game might pause and use minimal resources. Knowing what each app does in the background helps you decide which ones to close and when.

Android versions from 5.0 and newer have built-in memory management features that automatically close apps when the device needs more resources. However, this automatic management doesn't always work perfectly, and sometimes manually closing apps can improve performance more noticeably. Practical takeaway: If your phone feels sluggish or your battery drains unusually quickly, closing background apps may help restore normal performance.

Using the Recent Apps Menu to Close Applications

The most common way to close apps on Android is through the Recent Apps menu, sometimes called the Overview or Recents screen. This menu shows thumbnails of apps you've recently used and allows you to swipe them away to close them. To open this menu, look for a button at the bottom of your screen—it typically appears as three vertical lines, three dots, or a square icon, depending on your Android version and phone manufacturer. On phones with gesture navigation, you might swipe up from the bottom and hold for a moment to see recent apps.

Once the Recent Apps menu appears, you'll see a vertical or horizontal list of app thumbnails representing apps you've used recently. To close a single app, swipe it upward (on some phones, sideways) until it disappears from the list. The app then closes and stops running in the background. You can close multiple apps one at a time by repeating this process. Some Android versions allow you to close all recent apps at once by tapping a "Close All" button, usually located at the bottom or top of the screen, though this button isn't available on all devices.

Different Android manufacturers customize this interface. Samsung phones show recent apps in a slightly different layout than Google Pixel phones or phones from other brands. On Samsung devices, the Recent Apps button is typically on the left side of the navigation bar, while on many other phones it's in the center. Regardless of these differences, the basic function remains the same: recent apps appear in a visual menu that you can swipe to close. Some older Android phones might use different navigation systems, but most phones from the past five years follow this general approach.

One important note: closing an app through the Recent Apps menu doesn't delete its data or uninstall it. The app remains on your phone and can be reopened whenever you want. This method simply stops it from running in the background. Practical takeaway: Using the Recent Apps menu is the quickest way to close one or multiple apps you've been using, and it's the method most Android users rely on for regular phone maintenance.

Closing Apps Through the Settings Menu and App Management

For more detailed control over which apps are running, you can access the Settings menu and navigate to the Apps or Application Manager section. This approach gives you more information about what each app is doing and uses more system resources than simply swiping from the Recent Apps menu. To find this feature, open your phone's Settings app, then look for options labeled "Apps," "Applications," "App Management," or "Running Apps." The exact name varies by manufacturer—Samsung uses "Apps," while other manufacturers might use different terms.

Once you're in the Apps section of Settings, you'll typically see a list of all installed apps on your phone. Some Android versions show a "Running" or "Active" tab that displays only apps currently using system resources. Tapping on any app in this list opens a detailed information page showing how much memory it's using, how much storage space it occupies, and various options for managing it. This page often includes a "Force Stop" button, which closes the app immediately and prevents it from running in the background until you open it again.

The "Force Stop" option differs from simply closing an app through the Recent Apps menu. Force stopping an app is more aggressive—it cuts off the app completely and clears it from the phone's active memory. This can be useful for apps that are malfunctioning, running slowly, or consuming excessive battery. However, force stopping certain system apps can cause problems with your phone's basic functions, so you should only force stop apps you installed yourself or apps you're certain are safe to close. Apps like your phone's launcher, keyboard, messaging system, or camera should generally not be force stopped.

The Settings app method also allows you to see how much battery each app has used recently. On Android phones running version 6.0 or newer, go to Settings, then Battery or Battery Usage to see which apps consumed the most power over the past day or week. If you notice an app using an unusual amount of battery, you can force stop it or uninstall it if you don't need it. Practical takeaway: The Settings menu provides detailed information about app usage and resource consumption, making it useful when you want to understand which apps are affecting your phone's performance most significantly.

Using Developer Options for Advanced App Closing

Android includes a hidden Developer Options menu that provides advanced controls for app management and performance monitoring. While this feature is primarily intended for software developers and technical users, it contains useful information about running processes and can help you close apps using alternative methods. To enable Developer Options, open Settings, then navigate to "About Phone" or "About Device." Look for a field labeled "Build Number" and tap it seven times in rapid succession. After the seventh tap, you should see a message stating "You are now a developer" or similar text.

Once Developer Options is enabled, return to the main Settings menu and look for a new "Developer Options" entry, usually appearing near the bottom of the list. Open this menu to see various advanced settings. Look for an option called "Running Services" or "Running Processes"—this displays all apps and system services currently using your phone's processor and memory. Tapping on any entry shows details about that process, including how much memory it's consuming and options to stop it. This method gives you the most transparent view of what's actually running on your device at any moment.

The Developer Options menu also includes a setting for "Background Process Limit," which allows you to restrict how many background processes can run simultaneously. By default, Android allows a generous number of processes, but you can reduce this to 4 processes, 3 processes, or even lower. Reducing the background process limit forces Android to close apps more aggressively when you switch away from them, which can improve performance and battery life on older phones or phones with limited memory. However, this might also cause some apps to lose connection or fail to receive notifications, so experiment carefully with this setting.

It's important to note that Developer Options is designed for technical users, and changing settings here can sometimes cause unexpected behavior if you're not familiar with what each setting does. Most users don't need to access this menu at all—the Recent Apps menu and Settings app methods are sufficient for normal app management. However, if you're experiencing persistent performance issues and want to investigate further, Developer Options provides deeper insights into your phone's processes. Practical takeaway: Developer Options offers advanced visibility into running processes and resource usage, but it's best used by users who understand Android's technical aspects.

Managing Background App Permissions and Restrictions

Modern Android versions include features that limit which apps can run in the background and for how long. These features help prevent apps from draining your battery or using data without your knowledge. Understanding these background restrictions makes it easier to manage app behavior without constantly closing apps manually. Starting with Android 6.0, Google introduced Doze Mode, a feature that restricts background activity when your phone's screen is off for extended
