How to Clean Your Maytag Dishwasher Filter

Understanding Your Maytag Dishwasher Filter System

Your Maytag dishwasher relies on a filter system to trap food particles, debris, and other materials that would otherwise recirculate during the wash cycle or damage the pump. Most Maytag dishwashers contain either a single-stage or two-stage filter configuration, though the specific design varies by model year and series. The filter typically sits at the bottom of the wash chamber, below the spray arms, where it catches particles from the water as it drains.

Understanding how your filter works helps you maintain your dishwasher more effectively. During operation, water containing food particles flows toward the drain, but the filter intercepts these materials before they reach the pump. Over time, this filter accumulates everything from bread crumbs to grease residue. If the filter becomes too clogged, water cannot drain properly, which leads to standing water at the bottom of the dishwasher, poor wash performance, and potential odor problems.

Maytag dishwashers manufactured in the last 10-15 years generally include manual-clean filters rather than self-cleaning models. This means you are responsible for removing and rinsing the filter regularly. Some models feature a removable upper filter screen and a lower cylindrical filter basket. Others have a single integrated filter unit. Checking your dishwasher's manual or the manufacturer's website will confirm which type your model uses.

The filter system plays a critical role in your dishwasher's longevity. When filters remain clogged for extended periods, the drain pump works harder, potentially shortening its lifespan. Additionally, trapped food particles can harbor bacteria and mold, creating unpleasant odors that develop over weeks or months. Routine filter maintenance takes only a few minutes but prevents costly repairs down the road.

Practical Takeaway: Locate your dishwasher's manual or search the Maytag website using your model number to understand whether your unit has one or two-stage filtration. This information determines how thoroughly you need to clean and what components you'll handle during maintenance.

Preparing for Filter Cleaning and Safety Precautions

Before you begin cleaning your Maytag dishwasher filter, take several minutes to prepare properly. First, ensure the dishwasher is completely empty of dishes and cutlery. Even though you'll be working in the bottom chamber, stray items can fall into the filter area during your work. Next, turn off the dishwasher and allow it to cool for at least 15-20 minutes if it has recently completed a cycle. The internal components, particularly the water that pools at the bottom, may still be warm enough to cause minor burns or discomfort.

Gather your cleaning supplies before opening the dishwasher door. You will need a small brush with soft bristles (an old toothbrush works well), clean dry towels, a soft cloth, and possibly a small vacuum with a hose attachment. Some people prefer having a shallow basin nearby to catch any water that drips during filter removal. If you have hard water in your area, you might also want to have white vinegar available for dissolving mineral deposits on the filter.

Safety considerations include preventing water from splashing onto electrical components or your home's flooring. Open the dishwasher slowly to avoid water sloshing out if standing water remains in the chamber. If you have mobility limitations or find bending difficult, consider asking another household member to assist with this task, or use a small stepping stool to gain better access to the filter area.

Wear casual clothing that you don't mind getting slightly wet. While dishwashers are generally sanitary environments, the water and debris from the filter can be unpleasant to handle. If you have sensitive skin or are concerned about bacteria exposure, disposable gloves provide an inexpensive barrier. Keep paper towels or an old cloth nearby for immediate cleanup as you work.

Practical Takeaway: Set aside 20-30 minutes for filter cleaning on a day when you have time to work slowly and carefully. Rushing this task increases the chance of damaging filter components or creating a mess in your kitchen. Gather all supplies before you begin, so you're not searching for items mid-task.

Locating and Removing Your Dishwasher Filter

Open your Maytag dishwasher door fully and look at the bottom interior. The filter is typically centered or slightly off-center on the chamber floor, directly below where the spray arms rotate. In many Maytag models, you'll see a cylindrical filter basket that protrudes slightly above the floor level. Some models have a cover or housing around the filter that you may need to remove first by turning it counterclockwise by hand.

If your model has a two-stage filter system, you'll notice an upper screen filter positioned above the main cylindrical filter. This upper filter is usually a flat or slightly curved mesh screen. To remove it, gently lift it straight up using your fingers. It sits loosely in the housing and requires no twisting or complicated maneuvering. Set this upper filter aside on a clean towel where you can clean it separately.

The lower cylindrical filter typically requires counterclockwise rotation to release it from its housing. Grip the top rim firmly with your hand and turn slowly. You may need to apply moderate pressure, but avoid forcing it aggressively, as the plastic components can crack. Once you've rotated it approximately 90 degrees, lift it straight out. Be prepared for a small amount of water or food debris to drip from the filter as you remove it. This is normal and not cause for concern.

Before you start cleaning, take a moment to examine the filter housing itself. Shine a flashlight into the chamber to see if loose debris remains at the bottom. Some particles may have fallen below the filter into the sump area. If you see visible debris, use a small spoon or your gloved fingers to remove it. A small amount of standing water may remain in the chamber; this is normal and will drain eventually.

Practical Takeaway: Take a photo of the filter's position before removing it, especially if this is your first time. This reference image helps you reinstall it correctly. Mark a note in your phone's reminder app to clean your filter monthly, which prevents excessive buildup and makes each cleaning session faster and easier.

Cleaning the Filter Components Thoroughly

Start by holding the cylindrical filter under a stream of lukewarm running water. Position it so water flows from the top down through the filter material. Use your fingers or a soft-bristled brush to gently rub the exterior and interior surfaces while water runs through it. Pay particular attention to the bottom third of the filter, where the most stubborn debris tends to collect. The goal is to remove visible food particles, grease buildup, and any sludge accumulation.

For filters with mineral deposits or hard-water buildup, soak the filter in white vinegar for 15-30 minutes before brushing. Vinegar dissolves calcium and mineral accumulation that plain water sometimes cannot remove. After soaking, brush gently and rinse thoroughly with fresh water. Do not use harsh scrubbing motions or abrasive brushes, as these can damage the fine mesh filter material and reduce its effectiveness.

If the filter smells unpleasant, this indicates bacterial or mold growth within the mesh material. Continue rinsing with fresh water and use a soft brush to work the bristles through the mesh from both sides. If odor persists after thorough rinsing, the vinegar soak becomes particularly useful. Some people use a diluted solution of water and lemon juice for deodorizing as well. Dry the filter completely with a clean cloth before reinstalling it.

Clean the upper screen filter using similar methods. This flat component often has larger particles caught in its mesh, so you may see visible debris immediately. Hold it under running water and brush gently on both sides. Because this filter has a coarser mesh than the lower filter, it typically requires less time to clean thoroughly. Shake off excess water and dry it as well.

While the filters dry, use a damp cloth to wipe down the filter housing chamber where the filters sit. Remove any remaining debris or sludge from the floor of the chamber. This step prevents particles from reattaching to your clean filters immediately after reinstallation.

Practical Takeaway: Inspect your filter monthly to determine how often it needs cleaning. If you see substantial debris after just two weeks
