How to Clean a Mattress With Baking Soda

Understanding Why Baking Soda Works for Mattress Cleaning

Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a naturally occurring compound that has been used for cleaning purposes for over a century. When it comes to mattress maintenance, baking soda serves several important functions that make it particularly useful. The powder works by absorbing odors rather than masking them, which means it addresses the root cause of mattress smells instead of covering them up with artificial fragrances.

The science behind baking soda's effectiveness lies in its chemical properties. Baking soda is mildly alkaline and has a porous structure at the microscopic level. When sprinkled on a mattress, these tiny particles work their way into the fabric and foam, where they encounter odor-causing molecules. The alkaline nature of baking soda neutralizes acidic odors, while the porous structure actually traps odor molecules within the powder itself. This allows the baking soda to pull odors out of the mattress fibers where they've accumulated over time.

According to cleaning research, mattresses can accumulate a surprising amount of organic material over their lifespan. The average person sheds about 1.5 grams of skin cells per day, and much of this ends up in bedding. Additionally, mattresses can harbor dust mites, their droppings, and moisture from sweat and humidity. Studies have shown that a typical mattress can contain anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million dust mites. Baking soda helps address these issues by neutralizing odors associated with bacterial growth and decomposition that occurs in these environments.

Unlike commercial mattress cleaning sprays that often contain synthetic chemicals and perfumes, baking soda is non-toxic, inexpensive, and safe for people with sensitivities to strong scents. A box of baking soda costs approximately two to three dollars and can clean multiple mattresses. This makes it a practical choice for regular mattress maintenance compared to professional cleaning services, which typically cost between $150 and $300 per mattress.

Practical Takeaway: Baking soda removes odors through chemical absorption rather than fragrance masking, making it an effective and affordable option for mattress cleaning that works well alongside other cleaning methods.

Preparing Your Mattress and Gathering Supplies

Before beginning the baking soda cleaning process, preparation is essential for achieving the best results. The first step involves removing all bedding from the mattress, including sheets, pillowcases, mattress pads, and any decorative elements. Place these items directly into a washing machine and wash them separately so they don't interfere with the cleaning process. This also means you'll have clean bedding to put back on the mattress after treatment.

Next, vacuum the entire mattress surface thoroughly using an upholstery attachment if available. This step is crucial because it removes surface-level dust, dead skin cells, hair, and other debris before applying baking soda. Pay particular attention to seams, crevices, and the sides of the mattress where dust tends to accumulate. Proper vacuuming can remove up to 80 percent of surface contamination, which means the baking soda will work more effectively on remaining odors rather than being blocked by debris.

For this cleaning method, you'll need minimal supplies. The essential items are:

• Baking soda (one to two boxes depending on mattress size)
• A vacuum with an upholstery attachment
• A clean cloth or old towel
• Optional: a sifter, fine-mesh strainer, or large salt shaker for even distribution
• Optional: essential oils if you want to add subtle scent

If you choose to use essential oils to enhance the baking soda treatment, combine a few drops of oil with the baking soda in a container and let it sit for 24 hours before use. This allows the scent to distribute evenly throughout the powder. Common choices include lavender, which has calming properties, or lemon, which adds a fresh scent. Use only two to three drops of essential oil per box of baking soda to avoid over-scenting.

Consider the timing of your cleaning project. Choose a time when you can leave the mattress untouched for several hours, ideally during daylight so sunlight can help with additional odor reduction. Opening windows in the bedroom will also help ventilate odors as they're released from the mattress. If you live in a humid climate, aim to do this cleaning on a drier day when the mattress is less likely to retain moisture.

Practical Takeaway: Proper preparation including vacuuming and having the right tools ensures that baking soda can work most effectively and makes the cleaning process more efficient.

Applying and Distributing Baking Soda Evenly

Once your mattress is prepared, the application stage begins. The goal is to distribute baking soda as evenly as possible across the entire surface. For a queen-size mattress, one standard box of baking soda is usually sufficient, though larger mattresses like king-size may require one and a half to two boxes. Pour the baking soda into a container with a tight-fitting lid if you're using essential oils, or directly into a sifter or fine-mesh strainer if using plain baking soda.

Start at one corner of the mattress and work methodically across the surface. If you're using a sifter or strainer, tap it gently as you move across the mattress to create an even dusting. This method works better than shaking directly from a box, which tends to create clumps and uneven distribution. The goal is to cover the entire surface with a thin, even layer rather than creating thick piles in some areas while leaving other areas bare. You should be able to see the mattress fabric through the baking soda layer—it shouldn't look like you've covered the mattress in a thick blanket of powder.

Pay special attention to areas that tend to accumulate more moisture and odors, such as the center where your body typically rests and the areas around your head and feet. These zones experience more perspiration and skin cell accumulation, so they benefit from slightly more baking soda application. However, avoid creating visible piles, as the baking soda works by penetrating the surface rather than sitting on top.

After applying the baking soda, use a clean cloth or old towel to gently rub the powder in small circular motions across the entire mattress surface. This helps push the baking soda into the fabric and foam, increasing contact between the powder and the odor-causing materials. Work in systematic sections, moving from head to foot and side to side. This rubbing motion also helps distribute the powder more evenly and prevents clumping.

For mattresses with quilted or textured surfaces, use the cloth to work the baking soda into the pattern and seams. These areas can trap moisture and odors effectively, so ensuring baking soda penetrates these zones is important. If your mattress has a pillow top or Euro-top design, be especially thorough around the edges where the top portion connects to the base, as this transition zone frequently collects debris.

Practical Takeaway: Even distribution and gentle rubbing of baking soda maximize its contact with the mattress interior, resulting in more effective odor absorption throughout the entire mattress.

Allowing Adequate Time for Odor Absorption

After applying and distributing the baking soda, patience becomes your most important tool. The baking soda needs time to work its way through the mattress fabric and foam to absorb odors effectively. The minimum recommended time is 15 to 30 minutes, but studies on baking soda's absorption capabilities suggest that longer contact time produces better results. For heavily soiled mattresses or persistent odors, leaving baking soda on the surface for 8 to 12 hours—or even overnight—can significantly improve outcomes.

During this waiting period, avoid disturbing the mattress. Don't sit, lie down, or press on it, as this will redistribute the baking soda unevenly and reduce its effectiveness. If you have pets or children, close the bedroom door to prevent them from walking on the treated mattress. Some people prefer to drape a clean sheet loosely over the mattress
